had one of my gmail accounts phished

olestra

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
i know nothing abt internet security but just thought i'd pass this along since incidentally i noticed my browser complaining that this site isnt https and keeping up with internet security stuff is getting annoying. not that i think losing my gmail had anything to with nma, just a lot of us may have a lot of outdated habits on a site like this and it's just such a crumby thing to have happen to u, i'd rather pass it along than not.

i was lucky it was just a shitty backup i barely used, and i think i may have neglected 2-factor verification since when i made it i didnt really care that much and i didnt want google kiboshing the acct if i wasnt supposed to use an extra like that--either way i dont know, the questions and phone number in the series of questions to attempt to retrieve the account were random nonsense, so maybe i did and they were changed but who knows.

either way its the first time ive had this happen and it seems this stuff abt seemingly more sophisticated phishing is coming up in the news a lot more lately (yahoo and gmail being big targets), and it's just disturbing cos i actually cant at all trace when i would have used it in the insecure instances described but uh it still happened. so in case anyone was thinking abt securing/resecuring whatev they use on the internet but was leaving it on the back burner maybe get to doing whatev u were planning cos u may not get ur account back

I've got that annoying security that whenever I log onto a new Computer, my phone will be altered.
But I'll rather be annoyed than safe than carefree and unprotected.

As it's my main account, I'd rather not lose it (I lost a previous account due to it getting hacked and sending spam E-Mails).
As my main E-Mail is linked to many other sites now, I'd rather be extra careful.
Again... I'd rather have an annoyance for a few seconds over not my money and shit being protected.

Milim,

how could you lose money through your Gmail-account? You mean by losing access to Paypal-account, that would be one way I guess.

Yeah, that's what I meant I guess.

I mean once they got your E-Mail Password and stuff, it shouldn't be too hard to go from there I guess.

if you'v ever bought anything on android phone using google play you have a google wallet which people often attach to a credit or debit card to. aside from that if you are cross-refd with horrific garbage like pipl, they might be even more likely to know what street you grew up on or what your mother's maiden name was than you are, and if they now have access to where all your confirmation emails are sent

once they got your E-Mail Password and stuff, it shouldn't be too hard to go from there I guess.

apparently it really isn't. on the flipside hopefully the increased risk reminds corporations the benefits of hiring live human beings to offer services

eta: incidentally like here's an insecure website i gave my birthdate to for whatever reason. someone put on a wig and go pick up my vyvanse

eta#2: thats right insurers and employers, whoever owns this account is on vyvanse

Yea it's funny. Google/Gmail/etc. is the 'world's official search engine/email/etc.', Facebook is the 'world's official social media', Windows is 'the world's official OS' and they all have security problems. Some of the problems come from the fact that they are basically evil monopolies and thus big targets but much also comes from the crappiness of said products.

yeah this is becoming unprecedented though wrt the volume--at least according to sassy brit tech news. like starting with the half billion yahoo accounts late last year, apparently we didn't used to see numbers like this.
