Directed by The Purchase Brothers.

The Escape From City 17 short film series is an adaptation based on the Half Life computer game saga by Valve Corporation. Originally envisioned as a project to test out numerous post production techniques, as well as a spec commercial, it ballooned into a multi part series. Filmed guerilla style with no money, no time, no crew, no script, the first two episodes were made from beginning to end on a budget of $500.

Additional Notes:

Valve flew the team out to Seattle last year, and the brothers have been in communication with them since.

David and Ian Purchase are commercial directors represented by Sons and Daughters in Toronto. They are working on an unannounced feature film. Not HL related.

They have been huge fans of HL since the days of "ivan the space biker'

cool. nice sfx for the most part.

could've benefitted from someone with actual firearms experience though.

Someone in my class today was talking about this. Looks pretty damn good though see what he means about the zombies being a little... cheap.
Combine look great though.

It actually wasn't bad. I kinda liked it.
As SuA said, they need weapons training.
Looks and sounds like the game which is impressive. Pretty good stuff.

EDIT: Grenade explosion looked a little cheesy.

Is it just me or does the Tower in the City 17 video reminds me with its red glow to the Sauron Tower from Lord of the Rings :P

Do you mean making the firearms operate realistically or make the characters seem like they were trained to shoot? If it's the latter then I would respond that the City 17 resistance was mostly a lot of civilians with guns.

Anyway, definitely one of the best fanfilms out there. Up there with Batman: Dead End. I hope they are able to finish it into a satisfying narrative.

Not trying to question the professional quality of their work, but it leaves me very cold. I can't prevent myself from seeing Half Life the computer game with real life characters inserted inside, instead of a real world in which would appear half life elements. Maybe it's hard to get out or beyond the original media, and probably, being mostly a showcase of their talent, it lacks its autonomy as a piece of art.

But it may also be my usual "same shit over and over again" rant against those kind of "inspired by" movies ...

i have no trouble with them making beginner mistakes (or hell, some veterans still do stupid stuff as well), but i was more talking of them badly holding or shouldering the firearms. the gun's behavior would be vastly different than what was displayed irl due to their stance and way they handled it.

example: there's a close up where he obviously shoulders the SMG in a wrong way and then goes full automatic. irl, it would have slipped off his shoulder.
in itself, the weapon is pretty controlable (spray & pray style, but only if you know what you're doing), even without shouldering, but he was also was clearly holding it in a very relaxed fashion.

it no worky that way.

I liked it, although I thought that the whole ear ringing sound was a tad overdone.

Errr, have you played HL2? You hear that each time you kill a troop.

Judging by the pixilation of that films screen, I don't want to watch it.

People SHOULD NOT redo these things in their own native language man.... it should be illegal.

The Italian killed it for me lol.... Italian G-Man? And the headcrab was very funny lol...

I'm just like "WTF" when i saw the headcrab zombie.....

Look very funny instead of scary like the one in the game.
