Headphones for music

I've been looking to buy some solid over ear headphones for hi-fi music listening.
However, my budget is limited (40-50 euros), so the cheaper the better. Any recommendations?

Basically, I need these for my CDs and FLAC format music. I don't require anything fancy looking or made for outdoors, walking etc. - this is for indoors, listening-at-home purpose, so looks don't matter at all, only functionality.

Recommendations?

I have Sennheiser HD 428 over-ear headphones. A cheaper series, but the sound quality is good and they're comfortable and rugged. They're not available anymore, I think, but there are similar headphones from Sennheiser right now.
I think the HD 429 could be in your budget (or lightly stretching it) depending on where you buy.

I've been hearing good things about Sennheiser, and they're on top of my list. The particular model does exceed my budget somewhat, but it is tolerable. I will doublecheck it.
Since we listen to similar music, I can ask you more openly - how do they feel when playing densely layered, complex stuff?
That's basically one of the main problems I've always had with the headphones. Once there are too many instruments in the mix, it all gets too crunchy in a bad way.

They work really well for Tech Death Metal, that much I know :D
The tone is nicely balanced and I never found that I couldn't hear things I was supposed to be hearing.

I've got the Sennheiser 215HD headphones. Work brilliantly for really any knid of music -- no issues with an absent bass or anything. Probably slightly over-budget for you, but Sennheiser is the shit when it comes to headphones.

I have a pair of JVC HAS400B. They were really cheap (like €30 or something), but they're solid headphones with a great sound that weigh next to nothing (which is something I find important, 'cause some headphones are just too heavy and make your head hurt after a while).

Sennheiser is the better brand, though, but they can get expensive fast.

Hah. I walk around with a bulky CD Player I've had since the 90's and some shitty headphones I snagged back in high school. Can't believe it's all held up for so long. I have to take a cd player in the car because my radio got stolen. I was pretty sure people stopped stealing radios out of cars back in the 90's, but guess not.

But if you want cheap, I'd recommend this.

A recommendation I absolutely must provide is the Audio Technica ATH M50s.

Easily the best set of headphones I have ever bought.

  • They're comfortable
  • Sound quality is excellent
  • Reasonably sized
  • Noise cancelling
  • Relatively cheap compared to the competition (£110 on Amazon.co.uk)

Honestly, I doubt I'll ever by a different model (Or at the very least manufacturer) of headphone again.

Can't recommend them enough.

they are very neutral-sounding and detailed, without sounding overly analytic or boring.

Pretty much what I'm looking for. My listening preferences tend to differ a lot, and cross multiple genres.

...

Guys, thanks a lot for your input.
You have given me several new ideas and your information is invaluable. I've pretty much heard about every brand you've mentioned and have some of their equipment (Audio Technica, JVC etc.) which is serving me very well, so I will be on the lookout for the particular models you've listed or something similar, that's more suitable for my wallet.
Again, thank you all.

If you'd asked a year ago, I'd have pointed you in the direction of a pretty sweet gaming headset that would run in the 60 Euros range, then paid you for the digital unlock code that came with it, so you'd get the headset for under 30 Euros. But now they've stopped including those unlocks, so I can't do that anymore. =(

I too am in the market for quality headphones, so I'm afraid I can't offer much suggestion.

Oh, it's no worries. Appreciate the thought tho.

I found the adequate headphones. It's some Sennheiser model...I do not know which one precisely, I have it written somewhere around here.
In any case, I should pick it up from the store one of these days. It costs about 55 euros, so it's slightly over my budget, but I'm optimistic.
