Hello everyone, The Guardian here, I was just wondering is there is a resource that I can check memory compatibility for my laptop of the type listed in the thread title. Currently the machine sports 4 gbs of DDR2 6400 type RAM, however I was wondering if there was a resource where I could see if my computer can be upgraded to use the new DDR3 RAM standard.


Can anyone help with this?
 
Very few laptops support an upgrade to the extent you are getting at. No more so than any mobo. Sorry pally, but you need to get a new lappy if you want more bitchen ram... But, I wouldn't fuss with 4 gigs of 6400 on a lappy.
 
Your laptop's mobo supports only DDR2, so that's what you're stuck with.

Why would you even want DDR3? DDR2 too cheap for you?
 
As said before, tell us what your mobo is. Can't say much without that info.

Otherwise, why would you need more than/a more efficient 4GB of memory on a laptop?
 
The Pavilion dv9700 is an excellent gaming machine, with a 512 gb ATi 8600m video card and an HD monitor. Topped out at 4 gb of RAM up until last week (the 3rd of March) it could handle any computer game out there. Fallout 3 on high res and best settings lagged somewhat but I hardly play that excuse for a game now anyways. Empire: Total War however, does lag my machine down considerably and I am contemplating a RAM upgrade if it was possible. Apparently it is not. I will post the HP part number for the motherboard later today when I am actually on my laptop.

Might not be due to your laptop. Some games lag even on very high-end machines, many times more powerful than the best computer available at the time of said game's release. Notable examples are Gothic 3, SimCity4, SimCity Societies, The Witcher.

Some of them got patched up and work fine in patched versions. Mebbe ETW needs a' patchin'

That is almost certainly not due to insufficient RAM, as 4GB is plenty. Any game that actually manages to use up 3-something gigs is leaking memory, badly. In that case, what you need is a patch, not RAM upgrade.
 
That could be it, as ETW is a brand new game. I thought that perhaps as the RAM type itself is now superceded with a new standard (DDR3 and soon GDDR types) that I had a RAM bottleneck. I had also considered getting gaming RAM with lower latencies, but support information for laptops and RAM are so hard to find.

My motherboard by the way is an Intel make with the part number being 461068-001, don't know if this will help.

The computer also sports the AMD Turion64 dual-core at 2.00 Ghz.
 
Your motherboard does not support DDR3. There are very few laptops that do at this point, especially since there are very few advantages to it at this point and unless you have a i7.

that game with a custom AI and more than 1-2 AIs with a low 500 unit cap... amd 5200+ xp 64 with 4 gig ram... that game with custom ai package lags my computer to the point where 1 real second is equiv to 2-3 secs in-game...

thats a failure of the original game in how it handles AI, not a problem with my computer.

as computers get more advanced, any problems with speed and performance are not going to be from your computer, but rather the application you are using.
