How do you guys think...Floaters work?

After replaying Fallout 1 and 2, a question came to my head: What are Floaters actually doing to harm your character? The don’t seem to actually have any means of doing damage, and all you here when they fight something is a wierd “popping” noise. So what’s up with them?

But what would a tongue slap do? Not much, I don’t think. I don’t know how that’d damage someone

It's a horrible irradiated mutant. That tongue could feel like a fist-punch.

Yknow how some frogs are poisonous to the touch? Like you touch one and you get ill or even die? Yeah, Floaters poison you. So if they do direct damage then it is because that big floppy packs a punch and because of the direct burn or whatever that the poison causes. Could also be acid.
