I found this game much more enjoyable WITHOUT companions

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
Hey, just thought i'd share some thoughts on something iv'e concluded recently.

I used to travel the wastes with a power armor clad companion, Rex, and an NCR trooper and ranger (NCR radio) and combined with my Remnant armor clad self, any potential threat in the wasteland couldn't even get close to me. Even if they did, it would only take 2 shots from the Gobi Campaign rifle to kill say, a deathclaw alpha male.

As a level 30, with, more or less everything done in the wasteland, I was wandering around Freeside, when a gang of thugs were instantly killed before I even knew of thier presence, it was then I disposed of my companions.

I'd completed all my companions's story lines, and they were fun to have along when they were fresh, and thier dialouges updated, and they were lower level and ill equipped, however they eventually become mute powerhouses that just sour the experience. I'd recomend to everyone, to ditch all your followers, once the quests are completed.

I wandered into Freeside, and i'd also abandoned my Power armor attire, in favour of the gambling outfit, and swapped my C2547 Avenger, for the Mysterious Magnum.

As I walked out of the strip, and past the security, three thugs attacked me, I killed one with my limited ammunition I brought along, and ran back to the securitrons, who, in co operation with a fellow kings gang member, mopped up the rest. I took thier supplies, and I needed medical treatment. I decided to also forfit my essential supplies aswell as companions and munitions, so I headed to the New Vegas Medical clinic, a journey made extremley interesting as I fought alongside caravn mercenaries and NCR troopers, against roaming fiends, in actual, challenging battles.

In conclusion, companions really sour the experience of this game.

To each his own. At the end of FO1 and FO2, you and your gang would also be a collection of supermen who killed anything in under 3 seconds. So it's not exactly un-Fallouty to become the Lord Death Ruler of the Wasteland at max levels.

But I do see your point.

I'm pretty sure I'll always keep Sunny and her dog around, and E-DE. They are awefully convenient, Sunny is easy on the eyes, and damnit I always wanted an Enclave eyebot! Like I said, to each his own...

I known this feeling it's time to either play new character or quit playing. Although personaly I like being powerfull after honest hours of roleplaying. It's great achievment I felt after oryginal Fallouts, Bloodlines, Arcanium, Morrowind and don't felt at all in Oblivion or F03.

Melee sucks in New Vegas, as in pretty much all Fallout games. OK, maybe "sucks" is a bit harsh but it's definitely a lot less fun than going ranged. Same with Bloodlines, it took me only one non ranged build to realise I don't want to ever do that again. When you have an RPG with clunky combat (such a rare thing  ) you are better off taking out enemies from far away, that seems to be the rule.

Multidirectional: Weird, I played most of Bloodlines as a close combat warrior. Then again I did nearly all of my killings with stealth kills and shotguns :P

Yeah I must agree melee was not that bad in Bloodlines. It seemed to me the guns were the suckier avenue.

I loved how each melee weapon had its own stealth kill animation. The baseball bat was great!

WHAT??? Melee is one of the most fun parts in New Vegas!
If you build your character correctly, of course.

This bugs me, really. The game gives the same chance, the same type of damage in a weapon and the same chance of killing anything for both parts, the player and the enemies.
But no, this is so wrong, the player should have all the chances and the enemies none.
WTF?

If a guy goes in your direction with a Super Sledge on his hands and you have a assault rifle what will you do?
a) wait him to be close so you can ask how is the day and if he thinks it will rain?
b) shooting the shit out of the bastard?

If you think the right choice is option A, FNV is not for you.
So, it's OK for you do ranged killing, but not the enemy?

I never played Fallout 3 or NV with companions... I just hate dragging someone around. I like to experience the world as a lone character. I usually had one for most of Fallout 1/2, but that was mostly because they were pack mules.

You are a weird one. When did I say that (presuming I could actually decipher what the fuck you meant)? I only meant I enjoyed ranged combat a lot more than I did melee. Not being able to target body parts in VATS had something to do with it too.
But continue making up shit if it pleases you.
For Bloodlines, I never liked having to do melee in third person (yes I know of first person melee mod but it doesn't feel right either), also with shooting I at least get to handle recoil and try to aim for the head. With melee it's just click click click with occasional block. Not as fun. As I also implied, clunky parts in combat become a lot more evident when you fight enemies up close. And whoever thinks guns suck in Bloodlines just sucked at playing it. At chapter 2 you start to get decent guns and chapter 1 is manageable with melee weapons without putting any points in their skill.

Even though they said they'll rebalance the companions with the latest patch, imo they are even stronger now. I'm playing on hardcore/very hard in my second playthrough and I can't even get close to my enemies before Raul blasts the fiends heads off with ease (and just a crappy Revolver). So yeah, as much as I like the companions, I think this time I'll scrap them.

Some companions were made stronger, Sawyer said so himself. I think, pretty much the only one made weaker was Boone. Plus he's apparently bugged too now.

Yeah, I recall that. But well, I'm no employee at Obsidian Entertaiment, but companions, who even consider themselfes as "old and rusty" (Raul) one shooting mid-to strong enemies with a crappy revolver in huge distances isn't what I would call "balancing". :D

I think companions are scaled with the difficulty level, at least that's how summoned creatures use to work in Oblivion. So if you were playing on Very Hard your Boone would be of a "Very Hard" strength. Maybe that isn't correct.
