Indonesian Shenanigans

Ancient One
The Indonesian government has expelled the International Crisis Group, an independent organization that monitors terrorism and other threats around the world. The ICG was deeply involved in determining the plans and activities of regional terror groups. Although their reports are very informative and more necessary than ever they have been forced out because they are deemed to be a threat to national security. Altogether 20 national and international groups have been accused of "endangering Indonesia's national security".

It was after the Bali bombing that Sidney Jones was thrust into the limelight, largely for what was seen as her definitive reports into regional terror groups, particularly Jemaah Islamiah.

But it seems it was at least as much the International Crisis Group's reports on Indonesia's troubles in Papua and Aceh that lit the fuse of a campaign to throw her out of the country.

Because of the amusing and disturbing upcoming elections it is believed that President Megawati gave in to political pressure and expelled the ICG personnel in Indonesia. Many of the people do not like foreign interference of any kind and understandably, Islamic fundamentalists, especially those that Jones investigates, have always tried to get rid of her and even have her prosecuted. We can only hope that they will be allowed to return after the election. This could mark a return to the oppressive behavior of the past Suharto regime.

Just to give a quick run down of the election conditions in the biggest Islamic nation on Earth, with one of the largest and best equipped armies in the world and in close proximity to Australia (so we train their military officers). The two main contenders for the Presidential election are Miss Megawati Sukarnoputri and General Wiranto of the opposing Golkar party (Suharto's old party). Miss Megawati is an Indonesian Thatcher-nationalist who is the current President but is losing support due to a lack of significant economic improvement, terrorist attacks and an apparent disregard for the well being of the working class. General Wiranto on the other hand is a charismatic military leader who is wanted for war crimes by the UN and for arrest in East Timor for his part as the commanding officer during several massacres and human rights violations. However, he is a great pop singer and karaoke champion. His election campaign involves addressing large crowds with plenty of banner waving and pageantry and giving speechs speaking of how Indonesia needs strength and leadership, without actually having any policies. His response to the lack of policies is "If I go into too much detail, the people will get bored and throw rocks at me. It's hot in Indonesia you know". Megawati has similar campaign techniques but has the huge disadvantages of not satisfying people in her current term and not singing her own campaign songs..........
Wiranto seems more pop star than politician but it seems that the Golkar party will take overall control. Democracy is still young in Indonesia but it sure is amusing that the fate of the world could rest on who has a better song writer.

Mel Brooks might be able to write another musical called "The Singing Dictator", but this time, it will be totally serious.

Yeah i get their newsletter, will continue to monitor things, seems others might be expeled from now until the elections begin.

Wasn't Wirantro also the fellow who helped orchestrate Suharto's rather peaceful departure.

But "War criminal, great pop singer and karaoke champion" makes for an interesting resume.

Megawati- got her position only because her father was Sukarno- but she was damn quiet on the run up to Suharto's fall.

Doesn't Indonesia have any normal contenders? It's obvious Megawati is incompetent, but it's even more obvious this Wiranto guy is a moron and a demagogue. It's indeed sad that people have to choose between these two slimeballs to rule them. If I was living in Indonesia right now, I'd emigrate.

Does any country?
Indonesia's presidential candidates may take the bscuit, but as far as I can tell, there are no good candidates for any election.
I mean, America, Britain, indonesia. All the candidates are useless.

Hm, hehe. Reminds me of another country that has to choose between two slimeballs in the next election.

And the merging of pop-culture, demagogy and politics is pretty scary. Had debates for hours with my philosophy teacher wether people that can't read nor pass a hypothetical 10 answer (uber easy) test should have a right to say in who should run a country.

The sexy smiling macho, the image of what your frustrated ego wanted to be, with no policy projects, or the geeky, overweight nerd with a valuable program?

Exactly the problem. The answer of course is to try to educate people and control the influence of the inevitable conservative propagandists in the media. Curse their ill gotten power!

In Australia we have several good local programs that try to give a more moderate or lefty view point and 'keep the bastards honest'. These are almost entirely on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) and SBS (Special Broadcasting Service). ABC is the government funded, lefty channel that is being constantly investigated for bias although every time it is found to give balanced reporting, wasting money for the public broadcaster that is always starved for funds. SBS is the 'ethnic' channel, which has foreign news, film and is independent, allowing it to hammer the government without reprisal. Here are some of the fine media programs on Australian television.

Lateline (news and current affairs, ABC)
This has quality analysis of events and good reporting. Unfortunately it is after 10:00 at night but it is well worth the wait. This does enable it to be more controversial and serious than normal ABC news though.

7:30 Report (current affairs, ABC)
This is also informative and well produced. The great interviewer, Kerry O'Brien is hated and feared by most politicians for asking the right questions. Unfortunately it cannot attack the government as much as it is necessary because they fund them at the ABC.

Media Watch (media watchdog, ABC)
This points out plagiarism, factual mistakes, conflict of interest and blatant bias in the media. An example is exposing the 'cash for comment affair' in which popular radio hosts say positive things about large companies in return for a fee. They fight a constant battle against political spin in the media which is again ironic, seeing that their rightful victims are the people with the power to silence their piercing commentary.

Four Corners (current affairs, investigative journalism, ABC)
This long running program conducts very provocative and detailed investigations. It is very informative and exposes serious problems of corruption in civil institutions.

Cutting Edge (docos, usually from BBC, SBS)
Always brilliant and disturbingly informative.

As It Happened (historical docos, UK mostly, SBS)
These vary in interest but are usually good.

World News (news, SBS)
Balanced accounts of events internationally.

News Hour With Jim Lehrer (US news, SBS)
Best source of American news IMHO.

So what balanced and informative programs/channels do you people have in your countries?
