Water Chip? Been There, Done That
It's "Inside the Vault" again. And today it's Christiane Meister's turn to answer the questions. Of course they did not ask her if she played Fallout.
Our first Inside the Vault for 2008 is with someone all our Elder Scrolls fans know - Christiane Meister. She’s been the Lead Character Artist for Morrowind and Oblivion. She is currently hard at work on Fallout 3 along with the rest of the team.

What’s your job at Bethesda?
I am currently the Lead Character Artist for The Elder Scrolls titles.

What is the best part about working as an artist? The worst part?
My favorite part is designing how characters will look and work, down to the hairstyles, armor, and clothing. I generally liked to maintain a feel of culture — the objects that these people wore came from somewhere and were made by people of that particular place. I hope to carry that even further in the future. The worst part of the job is not quite succeeding at what you had envisioned, whether it is time, technology, or design constraints. But then art is never really finished — only abandoned.

What would you say is your personal favorite game of all time?
Hmm, that’s tough…I’d say the most memorable games I’ve played are Wing Commander, Grim Fandango, and KOTOR.

What games are you looking forward to?
I need to sit down and play Mass Effect and Assassin’s Creed.
Link: Inside the Vault - Christiane Meister

So she's responsible for the atrocious character art in Oblivion?

Notice how they toe the issue of her not being lead character artist on Fallout 3. Looks like someone got demoted.

Sad, but can't say I disagree. Oblivion has some of the worst character art I've ever seen.

Huh, sure, and not to even mention the fact they should have demoted a long time ago, if that's the case, the one that did get a promotion never played Fallout... Great change... Not that she did, though...

i'm the opposite, i love medieval style... but yeah, morrowind and oblivion had some terrible freakin models.

I guess all the Lead guys are. You don't have to grasp what Fallout is about in order to be a fan....

She did.

Is there a single Fallout fan in F3 team?

You can't expect a corporate culture to like everything they do. They are there to get paid not to satisfy a bunch of fans. All artists have a particular style so when they change games it is only obvious that they carry the style with them and not meet the cannon for Fallout concepts.

Well, they are talking about how they are great fans of Fallout. Corporate culture or not, lying isn't good.

Whatever it takes to get through team building with the boss king.

Heh, it's pretty funny if you read it that way.

"The bad part is that, well, we keep failing a lot. I have all these ideas and images in my head, but... they just don't come out right. *sob* We... we just aren't very good at this."
