Well I'll be a monkey's uncle.
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., April 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Interplay Entertainment Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: IPLY - News) announced today that four of its franchise titles for the classic Sega Genesis videogame system will soon appear on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console.

Earthworm Jim, Earthworm Jim 2, Boogerman, and Clayfighter, all popular Interplay titles on the Sega Genesis in the 1990s, will be available later this year on the Wii Virtual Console.

Nintendo's Virtual Console makes some of the greatest video games in history available for Wii. Users can download and play many favorite NES, SNES, N64, NEOGEO, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx 16 titles.
Man, Boogerman...$.05 for the person who can tell me (without cheating) what eminent Fallout artist also worked on Boogerman.

'bout time Earthworm Jim showed back up. It's my all time favorite platformer, and I'd give my left leg for a current gen iteration of the series.

And I'm not talking about that supposed PSP remake (Is that thing canceled yet?). Seriously, if there's one series I would buy a Wii for, it's EWJ.

Never played Clayfighter, and I really didn't like Boogerman.

Boogerman was a pretty plain platformer (with some nice art). It was a bit unforgiving. Even more so than Earthworm "hey there are no savepoints and you're going to have to helicopter 50 feet down a maze of spikes now KTHXBAI" Jim

EWJ was a fantastic game. EWJ2 was one of the very few linear games I never get tired of.

Now, how about MDK for XBL?

Boogerman was cool. It is one of the first "offensive" game I've ever played. Yeah, you could fart and use your snot as a weapon. Like reaaaAAAAAAaaaallllyyy offensive !

I was just about to post about this in gaming discussion. Does the wii/xbla/psn offer interplay hope to get back on their feet? With plenty of classic franchises, they could revamp a bunch of their old games with a very small team and start getting some cash flow into the coffers.

Uhm. No.

At least not as long as Interplay stays focused on FOOL. I'm sure this kind of revival will bring a nice few extra dimes for Herve's secretary, but they need investors if they want to go on with FOOL.

But this fits in that. Herve is constantly pimping the value that Interplay still has in IPs alone, showing off his IPs on his website, even this is as much made to show prospective investors "hey, we're not dead yet" as it is to generate a profit.

Still, they did hit a good tune there. Can't say i have much care for those little "gimme a little credit here" commercial games, but i think it is a nice touch, and of such moves, i can approve.

If anything, if Interplay isn't making all new games with the old IPs that might free up the dev team they may or may not hire to work on FOOL, while they put some money in the coffers through repackaging the old games. That might sound like criticism but hey, everyone else is doing it, why not Interplay?

Since Virtual Console is nothing but an emulation of the old software distributed digitally, there is no development costs, nor any shipping, repacaging or marketing costs involved. Releasing your games on VC is pretty much free money, and thus makes a whole lot of sense for a company in as deep financial troubles as Interplay.

Edit: whoops, Wasteland Stories beat me to it big time.

Still, I always thought VC releases take at least a bit of effort to port, or else companies like Sega could have simply dumped their entire library at once instead of releasing a couple of games a month.

That said, I'm not too big on the whole concept of Virtual Console. It might be good for people who didn't get to play these games back then (and I doubt that's their main audience), but to me it feels like paying twice for the same thing.

As a brand-new Wii owner, I'll be downloading all four of these games when I get the chance to. Man, I should get to playing Sin and Punishment while I'm at it... :)

I could imagine they use this to see which titles are the most popular so they can make a sequel and fuck it up and nothing important is going to happen so let's all eat cake now. Thank you for you patience.

On their website I couldn't help but notice that they had a drow from which I believe to be Baldur's Gate: Alliance.

I wonder if Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2 will end up on X-Box Live through the X-Box Originals titles. In fact, the drow chick looks the same as the drow chick on the box art of BG:DA 2. Hmmm...

I stopped playing console games when the Nintendo 64 came out. I hated it and eh...I don't know. Games like Fallout and Starcraft and in those days the PC seemed like the way to go.

I also missed a lot of games because of that. RPGS like Dark Alliance being one of them. Nowadays I have a Wii and the 360 along with my PC and I have to say that I'm looking forward to playing those old gems.

I can't help but wonder if Wasteland will be released on the Commodore 64 engine that the Virtual Console is going to support. That would be absolutely spamtastic.

I really dig how some of these older games are renewing interest in IPs that haven't seen love in years.

You know...

Old LucasArts adventure games would be sweet on the Virtual Console. Maniac Mansion on the Wii? Day of the Tentacle? I mean seriously that would be freaking awesome!

...back on track.

Clayfighter would be fun. I had that for the SNES. Why are there all of the Donkey Kong Country games though, when Nintendo should really be tossing up Killer Instinct though. Yar!
