I know that there has been a topic about this recently on here but my reasons for wanting a PSP are different so I thought I'd start a new thread.

At the moment I own a 2gb no name mp3 player and it is not enough to store all the music I want to have with me when I'm outdoors. Therefore I have been looking for a nice alternative for a while now.

It seems that most mp3 players with a decent amount of storage capacity are either just as expensive as a PSP or are even more pricey.

Lately I have also developed a movie addiction and the large screen on the PSP could make it possible for me to watch my Woody Allen movies early in the morning on the train on my way to college.

The shitty yet functional USB camera make it ideal for a cheap way to take pictures of family and friends when on vacation (I live in a foreign country and go back to my hometown every year twice or so...).

The gaming on PSP doesn't interest me that much, I'm not that interested in console gaming (except for playing PES with friends in the weekends) but it is nice to know that you can play games on it too.

I am thinking about getting the PSP 3000 + the Go!Cam package and as you can see I can't seem to find a single downside to PSP as a portable media center. This might also partially be because I'm quite enthusiastic about it and so I would like to hear your thoughts on the subject and maybe any alternatives for a portable media center before I go out and shell out 200 bucks for it.
 
Well the most storage you'll get out of it is 16gb. Personally I'd go with the DS, homebrews, more games, and the fucking amazing korg synth. A $30 synth? That alone justifies the purchase.
 
There is a really excellent modding community for the PSP (esp. the PSP 2000 revision, however the 3000 was recently hacked).

All sorts of great homebrew for it (and, of course, ahem, "other things").

Either way it is an impressive hand-held in its own right, has a great media player (a hacked PSP, however, has even more flexible media players, i.e. ones that play more formats).

Unfortunately, there ARE some good games, but a whole lot of mediocrity too. UMD movies are an absolute joke. You are stuck with memory sticks/UMDs as the removable media formats.

In the US, however, you can get a PSP bundle that comes with a PSP, game, movie, and a 1GB memory stick for $200 US (I bought one on newegg recently as an XMas present)

I've seen EEE pc's for €299. Can't fit into your pocket, but I reckon you can have tons more fun with one of these than with a goddamn PSP.
 
Yes I thought about getting a minilaptop but they seemed too cumbersome (of course compared to the psp).

So I bought an almost brand new one from a kind Dutch family this evening for 110 euros.

Now the question is: do I mod it myself or do I get it modded by someone else and avoid the cost of the extras of the DIY way but then pay for the firmware update every time a new one is available?

Life is so hard when you have to make such crucial decisions.

Short Answer: No

Long Answer: Still no.

Just aren't enough good games or features to warrant buying one. There are some solid games for it (Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2 are awesome and Jeanne D'Arc is pretty good), but it's kind of a dead system.
 
I bought a 500.00USD Asus EEE for 400.00USD.

Best purchase I've made. I ordered the 2Gb memory extension, and it's a nice little machine. WiFi, Bluetooth, nice 10" screen. Not to mention having 40Gb of solid-state storage, and having SC Card capability.

Let's me play Ultima, Fallout, Atari ROMS. Not to mention serving as an e-book reader for me.

Obviously, it's not going to play any graphics intensive games, but it's definitely worth to me, especially if I have to VPN into work from somewhere.

I would much prefer this over a PSP. More versatility, less proprietary BS to deal with.
 
The problem with the PSP is that its one possible use, as a portable emulation platform, can be better done by a any smallish portable system.

Hell PSP can't even run the SNES emulator at full speed, as the PSP version of SNES9X is written in C++ instead of Assembler. No chance of a better version as the developer of Zsnes (best SNES emulator) said that he wouldn't develop a PSP version.

Is that one that comes with XP or with Linux?

I saw one today for €199, an acer Aspire One A 110, but it comes with Linux. I'd love to know if I would be able to put Paint Shop Pro 8 on it. I doubt it, though.
 
PSP has a lot of "scene". I mean, you can use a cracked firmware and use lot's of software like Scumm or Dos Box.
