Joysticks

So, this might seem very outdated, but I bought a new flight sim that just came out. Wings of Prey, on Steam. It's the tits, as it's realistic like IL-2 Sturmovik (but a little dumbed down in comparison), but has soul and a mission structure. Also, I haven't noticed it to be very buggy so far.

The only problem it's a total bitch to play with mouse and keyboard. So I need a joystick. Can anyone recommend a good one, preferably in the €20-30 range? It needs to be left-hander compatible and have rudder control. I don't really need a shitload of buttons, 5-6 will do.

I asked for joystick advice a while back in this thread. I ended up buying a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2, which I'm very happy with (I'm still not sure if the FF works with Windows 7, though), but it's not for left-handed people.

Based on the recommendations in that thread, though, and on other sites where I asked for advice, I think your best bet is a Saitek joystick. I believe most, if not all, of their joysticks are both left- and righthanders, and the Cyborg Evo is for sure (and most people seem to agree that it's an excellent stick), although that might be slightly out of your price range.

The X45 is recommended in the other thread, but I've read elsewhere that the base of the stick and throttle tend to slide around on the desk, because you need both hands to use it, and therefore you can't steady the stick with one hand, while controlling with the other. The same goes for the X52. I haven't tried either one, though, so I wouldn't know myself, and other people seem to like them a lot, so maybe you would too.

That's about all the advice I can give you. Check out some Saitek sticks, and see if you can find one in your price range, that works for you.

Edit: I'd be interested in hearing a bit more about Wings of Prey, when you've played it a bit more. Does it support TrackIR?

Saitek is the way to go for top of the line, best on the market joysticks. I have an X45 and it's the cats ass.

Realistic compared to what?

Someone mentioned a stick with FF. I'm not sure if that's a very good idea, calibrating it after some time might be a problem.

So I bought a Saitek Cyborg X, but I'm having trouble installing it on Windows 7.

I can't help but think the LED lights and the 12 programmable buttons are overkill for a WW2 sim. It even came with an adjustment tool to set joystick height, button distance, and so on. If the driver won't install I'll ask Saitek for my money back. Or firebomb their headquarters. There really should be a terrorism blackmail option in support procedures.

Actually there are quite many uses for that many buttons even in a ww2 sim. You could set them to trimming, using the bombsight, arresting hook, flaps, anything. It's way more convenient than pressing dubious keyboard combinations.

I would like to withdraw my previous statement. I need more buttons.

Also, I finally managed to get the joystick working. Barely. It'll require a LOT of tweaking before I can play the game properly.

It was a bitch to install, I had to install all drivers manually, and they barely work. Don't get it if you have Windows 7.

I have a Saitek AV8R and it's okay. It was cheap and it does the job, but I don't love it. I used to have a Thrustmaster FCS I liked better.
