Just like that?

First time out of the vault
Hi!
After all these years I finally got over the very beginning of Fallout 1 (cave and rats) and dived into game. I loved it, much more than some new generation games, even with its outdated graphics. The world sucked me in, I started to building up, got excited for what is waiting for me ahead, but then poof, some cutscene with blowing up green vats and main screen :puppy-dog: No explanation, nothing, game ends!

Basically my gameplay was like this:
I went out to seek waterchip, found nothing at Vault 15, went to Junktown, got into trouble with everyone there, then went to Hub, did some quests, discovered plot about mutants, traveled with caravan to Brotherhood, did their joining quest, met some guy in wilderness, who told me that water chip could be possibly found in Necropolis, found water chip, Overseer sent me out to destroy mutants and their leader - the same goal as Brotherhood wanted me to do, went to Military base, killed everyone there, activated computer and.... game ends! Really?!
Such a big disappointment! I hoped to rise in ranks in Brotherhood, explore more map and travel to Boneyard, discover what the heck is with Children and who's mysterious Master. But no, game ends!
At least when i give in to mutants and agree to join them, there is cutsecene and some explanation what happened with me later, but when i blow up vats, it's finis. I even tried to activate timer and ran out of base - then I got message from remaining paladins "lets return to Brotherhood", but as soon as base blows up its main screen again.

So I wanted to know if it really ends like this because of my actions in game or it's some bug - I have GOG version and Fixt installed, Windows 7?

You don't just need launch the self-destruction of Mariposa, you also need to escape the facility before it blow up. (and go worldmap)
If you don't see a timer in your log, then, there is a bigger problem...

Ok thanx, seems like it worked, but how could I know it! I mean, if I activate first code on comp i got cutscene and game over! No explanation like "'you failed and blown yourself up"" or something, nothing, just main start screen. In most cases I probably would thought ok that's the game, what a disappointment, lets move on and forget about it. Maybe I'm too spoiled by modern games for this...

But thanks!

Did you get the chance to talk to the Lieutenant in the Military base?

If not... then I assume he is dead, and you've missed one of the best conversations in the game.

I talked to him  I tried all possible scenarios there: allied with mutants, resist and got tortured and then thrown into cell, kill everyone and then blow up the base. At beginning I thought that Lieutenant was the main boss of mutants, but yeah, I have no clue that i need to click on world map to get game continue.

It is to put distance between the PC and the lethal explosion; (and that's not the only instance of that in the game).

Not just Fallout 1. Situation in which you must (totally) escape a facility before it blow up also happen in other titles of the series.
It also happens in Wasteland 1, Fallout 2, Fallout:Tactics, and maybe FoBOS.

Have you activated it without hacking? A character with high enough Science skill can hack the machine and decipher that obscure strings of sudden doom. Fiddling blindly with military terminals is generally considered a bad idea!

Hmm yes I hacked it and it gave me chances to set timer for 3min to be able to escape.

Granted, Fallout 1 is a shorter game than 2, but you most definitely have more things to explore :D You can be assured that you are supposed to explore both Boneyard and the Cathedral! :D
You just triggered a... premature ending, one of the more unfortunate consequences of choices taken. Hardcore :V

Without spoilering too much, you can get some nifty benefits from the BoS as well, although you don't rise in rank
Also - like others have implied, it is perfectly possible to clear out Mariposa, and continue your adventures afterwards.
If done correctly, I believe you have to report back to Vault 13 after beating the main objectives, beyond just the water chip, meaning that even IF you beat Mariposa - and the rest - you can explore and look for tasks still, as long as you delay reporting back to the V13 Overseer.

If my memory serves me well, the game ends as soon as you destroyed both objectives, no matter if you reported for the first one, no matter if you have been tasked to destroy them or not (if you didn't bring back the waterchip in the first place).

I believe it is the only way to save Necropolis. Never visit the place. Never get the watership. Destroy the Master & the Vats, no one order the slaughter of the ghouls. (which was caused by your presence there). On the other hand, no one ever tasked you to destroy the master & the vats.

Ah, you're right about that.
I remember the finale being in Vault 13, you are cast out into the wastes, but you are taken there automatically after destroying the super mutants+master. I mis-remembered it as travelling there

Just addressing spoilers. Nothing to see here!

[Situation in which you must (totally) escape a facility before it blow up] also happens in Wasteland 1, Fallout 2, Fallout:Tactics, and maybe FoBOS.
Not maybe. DEFINITELY happens in FOBOS. Granted, the situation is different, but at the end of the day, it's just another "place is going to explode, escape before timer reaches zero!" scenario.

Actually, no. You want to repair the Water Pump BEFORE you take the Water Chip from the Vault, and the Ghouls won't turn hostile when you do that. Then, all you need to do is never return again and see the map having been invaded and every Ghoul dead. This is, of course, assuming you first arrived at the place prior to the invasion to begin with.

So long as the Pump is up and running and you never "witness" the place being invaded, you'll save Necropolis and get the best ending. Performing the above steps is the only way to save it AND collecting the Water Chip. Beating the game before the 150 days end, of course, is a separate matter.

I am not refering to the diplomacy with the ghouls. Of course ghouls would turn hostile if you remove their source of water without proper replacement. I was refering to the fact the muties would not take kindly that Set's gangs let you wander in the city unarmed, not inform them of the presence of normies, which wouldn't make them good allies, and ultimately disposable. Few characters can avoid entering the vault without being noticed by super-mutants, which would make them reconsider the efficiency/loyalty of their '"alllies"... There is also the possibility of the player character outright killing those muties, which call for a vengence.

You said, "the only way to save" the place, which refers to the state of the location as confirmed by the ending slide when you beat the game. I addressed what it took to save it and get the best possible ending. Diplomacy didn't enter into the equation. =P I didn't specify HOW you went about tending to any extraneous business outside of the necessary goals to achieving those ends precisely because they were irrelevant.
