Knock-knock, horror survival kickstarter from Ice Pick Lodge

Ice Pick Lodge is a Russian studio who make really weird and difficult games that all have unique and often surprisingly deep stories and settings. Read the RPS three-parter on one of my favorite games, Pathologic. They also made The Void, "a game about a soul that managed to linger in the Void before absolute death", and Cargo! The Quest for Gravity, "a game about creating such things as vehicles in order to restore gravity to earth".

Anyway, they joined Kickstarter with Knock-Knock. The pitch is weird and in clumsy English, haha, as you'd expect, but the game looks fairly interesting. Not exactly my genre, but I'm joining in anyway. Even the tiers are funny.

As of late the house is visited by unusual Guests which knock on the window shutters inviting the hermit to take part in a game of hide-and-seek. The winning condition is simple, you have to remain alive and to retain your sanity till sunrise. This means that approaching the Visitors head-on might be a terrible idea.

As soon as the first Visitor emerges from the thicket - the countdown begins. Every passing hour brings the Guests closer to the house, its walls proving to be an obstacle they are well able to surmount. Something is already inside. Something is opening the window and banging on the cookware. Something has gained control of the cellar and the attic. The floorboards are creaking softly behind the wall.

Hiding alone would never suffice, the Visitors are well aware of your position. Thus, you would have to make your rounds of the house, searching for the breaches that let the creatures of the woods inside and doing your best to mend them.

You could prevent the walls from being breached even more if you keep a close eye on the telltale signs and manage to bring some light into the room which would soon become an area of paranormal activity. The poltergeist would fall back for a while, if only to reappear in some other part of the house.

You could come across some useful loot which might contribute to your survival. The assortment and the stats of the items is always random, and the inventory is limited to 5 slots, so you would have to choose your gear preferences every single night.

I liked Pathologic from the looks and all, but somehow I could never play it for long, because I just had no idea what to do. I ended up walking around randomly.

Knock-knock looks interesting. Will keep it in my mind.

Btw. if they are a russian studio, how come they can put it up on kickstarter? I thought you must be set in america for that.

Sounds a bit like Amnesia, don't you think? Not that it's a bad idea (I'd like to have some more horror games like that).

Well, recently there have been quite a lot of european projects on KS. I've seen games from UK, Sweden and Austria. So I guess they changed the rules. Which is actually great. The more games from different countries the better. :)

Oh, and yay for Ice-Pick Lodge! :D I love their games.

I like the three sketches you posted, but the actual in-game artstyle isn't even half as interesting.

Also: this Kickstarter formula is starting to really bug the hell out of me. As if all these game-developers are flatbroke. It's begging is what it is. And you are all throwing money in the beggar's cap.

I am seriously considering putting my new novel on Kickstarter as well, to raise funds so I can drink lots of expensive booze and smoke lots of pot and have sex with a lot of expensive whores while "writing it".

I'll chip in 10 bucks for that. A novel on whoring, sound good.

If you'd add some drawings of yours it would be the first Kickstarter I would pledge for. :>

@ Topic - I enjoyed all of the developers games even though I couldn't finish any of them ( :( ) - the concept sounds a bit boring but trusting in the unique atmosphere and art directions they had before this might become good.

I absolutely adored The Void and Cargo (the smiley-face ubermensch gag still has me in stitches to this day). I do wish they could have made a spiritual sequel to The Void expanding on the character "Godsend."

SPOILERS: For those that don't know, it is implied in The Void that this "Godsend" had fallen from her world into ours in the same way your character in the World fell into the Void, and our world is to her as the Void is to your character.
