Kotaku ranks Fallout games

Stupid idea they had, and the ranks they gave are even more stupid.

Fallout 1 ranked last?
"All of the games in the franchise are excellent"?

I knew Kotaku had turned wrong, but this is utter shit.

Meh. It's all subjective. That said, I subjectively feel that this list is wrong on every count. I do agree that The Strip seems a bit dry, soulless, and lacking in content when held up to New Reno, but it also doesn't come within a mile of being the bloated (and yet, somehow, still unfinished), illogical beast that Reno was. Still, if there's any one argument this article made that resonates, it's that the strip itself could have been a far richer experience, what with it (arguably) being the game's locus.

(On the other hand, I get the impression that the author either completely missed or disregarded that The Strip was only supposed the be the sterile, tightly-controlled core of this urban sprawl, and that Freeside, Westside, Northside, the sewers, the Thorn, and even McCarran and Fiend Territory are all technically a part of the same "city." Judging New Vegas lacking solely on the merits of the strip is kind of like judging The Hub lacking because there's not much to do in The Heights.)

Fun list, mostly because whenever someone wants to rank Fallout games it's usually just an excuse to put FOT and BoS next-to-last and last respectively, yet this time they're not even there.

Also, seems she was caught up in the hype of New Vegas, since the titular town is the only thing mentioned, while I never focused too much on that.
The strip is pretty boring, but mostly compared to the rest of the world/game.
The thing is that the game and its primary conflict was never about that town, just centred around it.
Oh well.

Also also: Dumb as fuck to rank FO1 last, since it's the most cohesive Fallout experience to date.

I am the only one, who only hear about Kotaku, when someone is sending link "hey, they are praising about my fav game or something similar". I mean, I don't even know a single person, who visit this web.

But I looked at article and huh...
Fallout: New Vegas - to describe it, he used word "LINEAR" L-I-N-E-A-R
And he called Moira "tough to forget.
And it will be better, if I will stop now.

Btw. comments are the best.

I agree. In New Vegas, the protagonist felt like more of a non-entity, despite their attempt to add some character to you by deciding you were a courier and the whole attempted assassination thing. It just didn't play out very well.

And in 3 the characters you interacted with and the quests both seemed far more creative and interesting. The outcomes seemed to have more impact than those in New Vegas, and that's probably because they were trying so hard in NV to make the multichoice main quest stay relevant no matter whatever else you had done, which I feel ultimately dulled the game and limited a lot of options
I prefer 3 to New Vegas only because I had a better experience rampaging through 3 than I did Vegas. I also felt like the protagonist did more overall in 3 than in Vegas.
I'm one of the few who thinks FO3 is better than New Vegas. Don't get me wrong, I like both quite a lot. And I still have intentions of playing 2. New Vegas had some pretty great writing, but something about the quest options just felt lackluster to me. In theory having the different factions to fight or befriend was cool. Except the factions shouldn't have been so clearly defined as Good and Evil (you get good karma for killing powder gangers or legionnaires, and bad karma for killing the NCR). In FO3 the choice between brotherhood or enclave seemed more balanced—you could rationalize either one seeming like the good idea to support.

And more, more... of this bullshit.
I mean, Kotaku is web for console player?

FNV probably isn't as popular as F3, because console players have problems with roleplaying and with thinking, and if you give them easy good/evil gameplay like in F3, they can at least understand it and add to this some higher ideologies.

Moira is tough to forget. It's been close to a year since I played FO:3 and I can still hear that grating voice.

Even if the ranking was kinda dumb i do agree with some of the things he said. Like the fact that "NV" has been done with a better result in F2.

And F1 vs F2? Well F1 started it all and had some really great places/things but F2 had way more replay value so it depends on what you prefer.

And Languorous. This is the first time i hear about him :P
And most of the people who really loves F3 probably haven't played F1-2 so by that standard the F3 enclave is kinda neat. But some of the responses are so sad i'm not sure what to say.

Her girl moustache is not something you will forget...

I hate to sound insulting but these lists reminds me how in general the main gamer community is devoid of taste and sense.

Responses about how the choices in FO3 had more meaning are so cringe worthy to me. They bring this up but they don't back it up with any example.
If you kill all the slavers, will it ever be brought up again, or the Talon Company?

I agree. "The Courier" was too much of a puppet to everybody, never really able to stand out and truly accomplish something on his/her own.

What? The Courier was basically the only one who accomplished something, changing the fate of the Mojave.
The FO3 character was basically a tool of the entire convoluted campaign.

These kind of topics are bad for my mental health, but I would like to say that the person who wrote this has shown that she like most people just doesn't get role playing in general.

This list is so stupid, one should make a list of stupid lists and this one would be far at the top ladder.

I can't read this shit, especially not the comments. It just critically hits me in my brain.

Haha, I just saw "Patricia Hernandez" and just knew that Fallout 2 would be #1 because of lesbians. Although it's weird that she didn't mention them in the NV entry.
The comment section is awful.

Gee, YA DON'T SAY??? (No cheeky meme or image to ram the point home. Just underlining an observation that should become a given as more time passes.)

That said, considering my dismal expectations for that list, given the limitations and restrictions she made to her choices, it actually held up alright! Although, that's still saying nothing that, as far as the concept behind the TOPIC goes, and many key statements, that the "list" in question was just..... bad for anyone's intellectual health. "...all of the [Fallout] games have been met with praise" Really? I was under the impression that the universally recognized loathing which BOS received was the exact OPPOSITE of praise. "Remember, this is my personal opinion." I always "love it" (read: am filled with homicidal rage every time I see) when the "opinion" card is whipped out, like that actually amounts to anything. It's always used as an end-all get-out-of-jail-free card to any topic or statement. I never see opinions being used AS OPINIONS. i.e. "I like seafood, but don't put Shrimp in front me me; that stuff is nauseating."

I was actually pleasantly surprised that the first (and only) comment I read was logical and made sense, explaining how FO3 was a good game, but FONV was a good Fallout game, since I normally only expect the most deplorable and ignorant ideas to congregate in comments sections. However, I'm positive that I would have seen the expecting brain-shit had I continued reading. It was just nice that when I accidentally walked into the comments, I was graced with sense. That was unexpected. All things considered, I could have felt MUCH MORE mentally damaged from visiting that "list", but with enough caution and luck, I made it out none-too-damaged.

Why just add Stalker or metro series?
I don't think fo3 is Fallout but same way of these two though far wore than these two though.

heck, Fo1 is worst? at least, it's far better than fo3.
and it is bad because of comparing with FO2 and NV, which are Master piece game.

writing #it felt like I was playing The Elder Scrolls with a different skin# and still rank f3 second
disqualified ...

/shrug i'm not of the mind set that Fallout 1 and 2 are sacred and above critisism or that FO3 and NV are the devil's work and without merit. I have enjoyed all of them (even FO3) and i can nitpick all of them (even FO2). overall i'd switch FO3 and NV. otherwise its a decent list. and yeah Kotaku comment's section is the true wasteland...

If I had to go for my own list (including Spin-off and DLC) then here it is.

Games
New Vegas
Fallout
Fallout 3
Fallout 2
Tactics
Brotherhood of Steel (A fun game, that's terrible).

DLC
Point Lookout
The Pitt
Honest Hearts
Broken Steel
Operation Anchorage
Mothership Zeta
Dead Money

I've not yet played the other two New Vegas DLCs.

Listing them by personal opinion has been done to the Nth degree and there have been many topics dedicated to that very purpose. This is not that. I've already tossed my own 2 cents towards that topic a looooooong time ago, where I had to validate my list by explaining that Fallout and Fallout 3 being next to each other on the list was practically meaningless, because of the tremendous gap between the two. This, however, is about how crazy that particular list presented by kotaku was, more than anything else. Not about what WE think the list "should be". Been there, done that. =/

My post got Vatted and labeled as "Don't Do This", along with someone else's post from this forum, in which I replied to.

But to stay on topic, this list is horrible, as I said in my first post. My own list would be Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas (in that order, starting left (as best) and going right. Damn mods... no sense of humor...
