lcd vs crt

It Wandered In From the Wastes
i'm thinking of getting myself an lcd monitor but I want to know what the main differences between lcd and crt is, and how good lcd is at gaming...And since this is a page dedicated to a certain computer game we all know and love, i suppose someone here would know...

Well I've got an 21" LCD and are quite happy with it, of course it's not as good as a good CRT on gaming. The pixles sometimes move slowlier than on a CRT, but it's not that noticable..

LCD looks better, takes LESS space (much less)..downside is of course the cost..

I am hoping the cost will come down pretty soon. Product cycle these days on home electronics is pretty fast.

I switched over to and LCD, and I'm pretty happy with it - it takes up less space and I haven't noticed any difference in graphics quality in any of my games. My only advice would be to make sure the one you get is capable of a high refresh rate and resolution.

I got a 27' CRT and it kicks ass, i can pretty much watch the simpsons and stuff from my couch, BTW is kicks ass for CS, D2, SC, and other games of that sort.

I heard somewhere that lcd monitors only support 24bit color depth, is that true?

No, and whatever the recent developments on LCD monitors if one wants to play games or do some photoshop work a good large CRT monitor is always better and cheaper.

CRT vs. LCD showdown! Fight of the year, be sure not to miss it! OK, seriously:

Advantages of LCD over CRT:

- LCD has amazing, colorful, still, detailed picture, much better than CRT
- LCD supports DVI (digital connection to video card) which further increases image quality
- LCD takes much less space than CRT
- LCD uses a lot less electricity than CRT
- LCD is usually very beautiful, elegant and available in cool black, silver and grey colors, unlike CRT which is ugly, big and in 90% cases white
- Ratty uses LCD, which means LCD is better
- soon everyone will have LCD and only dinosaurs will be stuck with CRT

Advantages of CRT over LCD:

- picture quality of CRT is a little better when picture is in motion, though you can barely notice it on a modern LCD
- CRT displays all resolutions with same quality, while LCD has a hardware resolution (usually 1280 x 1024) that looks perfect, while others look pretty mediocre
- CRT is able to display black color better than LCD
- CRT is still slightly cheaper than LCD, though LCD is very affordable nowadays

Result: LCD kicks the crap out of CRT and eats his ancient, dinosaur balls for breakfast.

- LCD has amazing, colorful, still, detailed picture, much better than CRT

Nope, it`s getting there, but it still hasn`t, and anyway with the price beeing much higher on the LCD stuff it`s not worth it, except if you have a small tablr to put the monitor on.

Just grab a nice big 19" or 21" flat screen CRT. They don't take up that much space and they suffer no motion blur. I'll never turn to LCD's unless they drop the price and improve the technology and it's 12am and i have school tomorrow and the holidays have just ended and i need to piss and my left eye hurts and i want to play my stolen copy of icewind dale 2. damn. Besides, why would you play a game in 1280x1024 when you can play it at 2024x1900 with the same quality, unlike lcd's dislike of reso's above 1280.

Another advantage of LCD:

they are lot lighter that CRT's, i can't buy a CRT over 15 inches, 'cause my bro Viewsonic e651 fits right in the opening of the trunk of my car. A bigger LCD could fit well in there.

Great, now all he needs is P6 15 GHz and a Radeon 12600 with 4 GB RAM to run the game at acceptable frame rate in 2024 x 1900.

Brios, call me blind, but I still claim CRT is no match for LCD picture stillness, sharpness and quality. Desktop looks like a painting... when I first saw that, I knew I simply HAD to have an LCD monitor! :D

What about dead pixels, motion blur and bright or dark pixels. I must admit, the picture quality is excellent but then again i've never seen a flat 19" screen up close in real life. Hey hey hey(say in fat albert tone), 2024x1900 runs fine on my stepbro's PC which has a 1.5 ghz athlon xp, 512 mbs of ram and a geforce 4 ti4400 in games like unreal 2 and morrowind. I hate these people who run there games in like 800x600 on there beast PC's to achieve a framerate of like 300 when there computer can handle so much more. Like my stepbro, he runs CS in 800x600, for no reason, even though it would achieve the same framerate at 1600x1200. I love running games in insane resolutions :D

I didn't know Morrowind even supported that resolution...

Anyhow, strange how all LCD haters talk about dead pixels, motion blur and other stuff, yet I never experienced (or met anyone who did) any of these terrors. I'm beginning to think they are just a thing of a past that still gets pulled as an argument in discussions like this one.

Yeah, I like insane resolutions too. On my laptop I use 1680x1050... :D

I've never noticed a difference in brightness and motion blur on either. Perhaps that's because I'm color-blind. All I know is that CRTs cost about ½ as much as LCDs, and since I ,unlike ratty, did not recently win any lottery and/or become a drug dealer, I choose... CRTs!

The price difference isn't that big anymore. A 19" Samsung NaturalFlat monitor costed more than my 17" LCD which is perfectly flat, has better picture quality, as well as DVI support.

once again my bad english strikes! with "lighter" i meant "less heavier than crt"

Ha! Very funny Ratty, very funny! Watch out though, some might not realize you were joking.

My apologies Mr. Gabo for misunderstanding.

I thought gabo actually meant they were lighter as in they weighed less. CRT's tend to have slightly bland and coarser colours. I was using this one new CRT and the screen looked like it was drawn on a peice of paper.
