No, not really.
Character creation looks good because it's SPECIAL, but once you play the game, you'll understand that SPECIAL is totally out of place in this game. You have to become a fighter in Lionheart, whether you like it or not. Once you go travelling outside the city, you're fucked if you don't know how to handle a weapon well. There's too much hack and slashing to be done and there ain't nothing that comes close to a party of followers as you know them from Fallout or Arcanum. Which is fucking sad. The points you distribute in SPECIAL do not seem to affect quests much either, as far as I remember.
Another thing is that it seems awfully unfinished: there's Barcelona, there's another (smaller) city and a handfull of small locations and then there's just lots of hack and slashing to be done. Your character can sorta specialize while inside Barcelona, which is a really fun roleplaying city, but outside the city, it's just hack and slash, hack and slash. And combat sucks for a variety of reasons.
Last gripe would be the goddamn controlbar. It's big. It's friggin' huge, actually, and you can't click it away during battle, so that sucks in certain areas of the game (most areas).
Still, the game has got some good points too:
- The trimetric art is really awesome at certain points in the game, Barcelona in particular. (The animations suck, though, and movement is a bitch.)
- Dialogue is pretty good. And this does follow your stats in SPECIAL. Different NPCs have different portraits displayed. Cute.
- The spirit. There's a spirit in you and it sometimes like talks to you and tells the story of the game. I thought that was a nice touch.
If you managed to play through all the really good RPGs and some of the bad ones and you only want another "RPG" experience because you're addicted, then go for it. I found myself playing "Kult: Heretic Kingdms" two months ago. Sucks donkey balls, but when you're in love with isometric old-school RPGs, you're usuallu capable of dealing with these kind of flaws. I know I am.
