Lost opportunities for Fallout 3

PC Game Fun Time has an editorial about the sacrifices Fallout 3 had to make due the gaming censorship.
Undeniably, a part of that magic was the mature nature of the games. The original Fallout series featured many adult topics, including sex, prostitution, drugs, and drug addiction. Unfortunately, times change, and many of these topics are no longer considered fit for video games, at least if they want to avoid the instant death sentence that is an “Adults Only” (AO) rating. Games with this rating will not be sold in most brick and mortar stores, which means there is little hope of AO games achieving the kind of sales that less harshly rated titles often do.

Because of this rating stigma, there are a number of things from the original games which will not be included in Fallout 3:

1. Nudity - While you may not have even realized it while playing because the graphics were so primitive, in Fallout 2 if you played as a female your character would be topless for the entire opening sequence. (Actually, male characters were topless too). This actually fit in well with the fact that you were a member of a primitive tribal society.
2. Prostitution - Sure, there will be Prostitutes in Fallout 3. But will you, the main character, be able to pursue a career in making porn, like in Fallout 2? I doubt it. Also, in Fallout 2 seduction could be used to further a quest or just for your own amusement. It seems unlikely that these options will be present to the extent they were in previous games.
3. Child Killing - In Fallout 2, there were these annoying little pickpocket urchins in one of the major cities. While I personally never actually killed one of them, you could attack them, and killing them was on the table. It takes away from the atmosphere of the game if going in you know that some characters will be invincible for no apparent in-game reason.
#2 isn't fully correct, seduction will likely play a role though it's unknown if Fallout's "sleep with him, it solves everything" remains. Pretty sure #1 isn't correct about the topless PC, but I'll leave that to our pixel-counting brethren.

I know that number one isn't true in the U.S. version. AFAIK, the only valid point to be made here involves child killing.

Yeah, you can look at any female tribal sprite and see that there's a bra of some kind. Due to the low contrast of tanned hide on human skin (and the limited color palate), it can appear to just be more skin at a glance.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto had full frontal siren too.
Though in some versions it didn't.
Fuck you censorship.

This looks like a job for SCIENCE!

Here's a front and back shot of a newly created female PC in Fallout 2:

The front certainly looks like it could have bare breasts, but if you'll look at the back, you can clearly see a horizontal band across her back, about level with her breasts. The only conclusions I can come up with are that she has some sort of awkward tattoo back there, an unfortunate spine and ribcage problem, or she's covered by a crude bra and in the front it blends in a little too well due to the lighting and limited colors.

I always thought they wore bras...

I think they are missing a few things in the missed opportunities list though

I don't see why AO rating needs to be such a horrible curse. I mean, I've never seen people kick up a fuss about PEGI's equivalent 18+ rating.

An AO rating basically makes any game sell like shit. Many, many stores will not sell the game, including big name stores like Walmart and Best Buy I think.

I miss the times when I went to a computer store to buy my games. The only part of buying games in big chains I like is the sell-out part.

Anyway, it's pretty annoying that those store chains have such a big influence over gaming - they killed cardboard boxes too, didn't they?

Yes and no. Production cost was a factor there as well, but shelf space in stores definitely had a big impact on the popularization of the DVD box format we have now.

It's not that odd that store chains have such an impact. They're as big a part of the game industry as any game company. It is what it is.

I'm aware of that. I still don't see why that's how things need to be. Again, I don't remember anything like almost all European stores refusing to sell MGS4, GTA games, God of War, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, et cetera. There's the occasional complaining from the UK or Germany for the likes of Manhunt or Carmageddon, but that's about it.

Or maybe I'm just going completely senile, whatever.

That's weird. Here in Poland somehow we have porn magazines in almost every store that carries any magazine and newspapers, including store chains and no one complains.

They also sell booze in corner stores don't they? Here(Canada, more specifically Ontario) They have to be government stores.

Most of these are rated M by ESRB. And the PEGI 18+ rating is more of an equivalent of M. We don't really have an equivalent of AO.

and no one complains.

They do.

Yeah. Almost every food store here probably earns most of its money on selling alcohol.
