This is a new type of roleplay, a combat roleplay, make sure to read the combat rules.

The Lost Platoon is a roleplay which takes place in the middle of an interplanetary war between two factions: The Expeditionary Forces come from Earth and Earth allied colonies, and the Independent Sagittarius Dominion forces that are part of a group of colonies interested in forming a separate independent government.

While the authorization to from an independent government was permitted by Earth authorities, the problem began when the availability of resource profitable planets began to run out, and it was more and more difficult and expensive each time to find resources in far away planets and then bring them back.

The discovery of a new planet which promised new resources with the capability to travel long ranges in a much cheaper way set the fuse. War was raged over the control of this planet, making it be the first planetary war, and dividing humanity in two groups hostile to each other.

The ISD did no forget the defeat at the hands of Earth forces, and enough hate was created to start a full scale universal war which would rage over the centuries without a clear winner. This is the beginning of that war…

Report Nº11255/43
2nd Lieutenant Hernan Esmaldone

"The coast was filled with bodies and burning APC’s when we landed, we had to make our way trough the enemy fire taking cover behind our own destroyed vehicles. When we made it to the top of the hill in front of the beach I looked back and all I could see was destruction, our whole invasion force decimated on the beaches. I lost more than half of my platoon that day, I was lucky, most did not even had that left.

We made it to sneak inside a burnt out city, what once was a well developed colonial settlement. It is only just some cover and refuge we were able to find here, all supplies were scavenged, the power was out, nothing worked, and we had no way of making contact with ally forces nor knowing what it was of other expeditionary forces on the planet.

The assault was suicide, the defenders were well dug in, and were able to successfully hide his positions from our battle cruiser’s so infallible spy-cams. The zone was bombed before the attack, but the bombs hit nearly anything at all, they were out there waiting for us when we came. It reminded me of the amphibious disaster on the attack to the Dragoon Peninsula in DPM144, fifty years ago during the first planetary war.

We’ve been able to successfully hide for one day, but a patrol finally found us last night and we had to split. As far as I know we are separated in three different groups. Koch, Estevez and Füller are with me; Sergeant Major Walters is with Stewart, Hudson and Claverie; and there are Dubose and Stone hiding around there somewhere. I dint hear any shots, shouts or explosions since last night, so if everyone escaped everyone should still be alive.

Walters is one of the most experienced and capable NCO’s I ever met, so I have full confidence he’ll get his men safe. As for Dubose and Stone, well, Dubose is very resourceful he’ll find a way through.

It is six o’clock in the morning out here and the sun is coming up, hopefully the thick clouds and the fog will reduce the visibility enough for us to hide at day. One of the men just asked me if we can expect rescue or another ally assault on the area, I said “yes, possibly” but I don’t have a clue, if not, then god help me because we are lost…"

Combat

Combat:

The weapons have a minimal damage and a maximal damage. Maximal damage is the max damage the weapon's cause to its target. Minimal damage it is the minimal amount of damage a weapon can cause, below that minimal the weapon will cause no damage and it will considered as a miss. The less the minimal damage the more accurate the weapon, the more maximal damage the more damage the weapon can cause.

Combat stats modifications by character:

Some players have damage bonuses EG: If a character has a +5 damage means that maximal damage on all weapons is increased by 5. During the course of the adventures these bonuses can be improved.

Weapons:

Rifle: The rifle is very accurate, but it's small calibre causes limited damage. The rifle stats are 10-32. With this type of weapon you have two shots per turn.

Support weapon: The support weapon is a powerful weapon, but lacks the control of a rifle. The support weapon stats are: 20-55. With this type of weapon you have three shots per turn.

Hit points:

All PC's and NPC's will have a limited amount of hit points. Below that amount the player is dead.

Combat example for three shots:

Franz Koch: 52HP

Enemy grunt: 50HP

Franz Koch rolls rifle attack (10-32). Roll result: 86 (1d100)

Franz Koch hits Enemy grunt for 32 HP: 50-32=18

Franz Koch: 52HP

Enemy grunt: 18HP

----------------------------------------------------------------

Franz Koch rolls rifle attack (10-32). Roll result: 8 (1d100)

Franz Koch misses.

Franz Koch: 52HP

Enemy grunt: 18HP

----------------------------------------------------------------

Franz Koch rolls rifle attack (10-32). Roll result: 20 (1d100)

Franz Koch hits Enemy grunt for 20 HP. Enemy grunt is killed.

Franz Koch: 52HP

Enemy grunt: -2HP

Cover:

When in cover a player can choose not to fire if he is in danger of dying due to low hit points and avoid being hit depending on how many shots he uses. If he uses his two shots to cover he cannot be hit. If he uses one shot to cover and the other to fire, incoming fire will not cause damage depending on if he takes cover first and shot later or shot first and covered later. EG:

Player attacks:

Player takes cover
Players hits enemy soldier 1 by 12 hit points

Enemy soldier 1 attacks:

Enemy soldier 1 attack by 14 hit points is blocked
Enemy soldier 1 misses

If the player had chosen to shoot first and take cover later he would have received the damage of the first shot.

If you use all your shots taking cover you cannot be hit:

Player attacks:

Player takes cover
Player takes cover

Enemy soldier 1 attacks:

Enemy soldier 1 attack by 14 hit points is blocked
Enemy soldier 1 attack by 11 hit points is blocked

This way you can take a gamble by sacrificing shots for cover. Depending on the type of cover there are several options available:

Poor: Player cannot use the cover feature when cover is poor.

Average: There is some cover in the area, but player must have to spend a turn to find a cover position.

Good: Player has no penalty turn looking for cover.

Great: Player can use both shots with a cover bonus or cover twice and have one bonus shot.
This way player can shoot twice and risk only being hit once (being this always the last shot the enemy used) or take cover once and fire once by avoiding all damage at the same time.

Level

All characters can level up. To reach Level 2 in a character you must kill one enemy, to reach level 3 you must have killed a total of 3, to reach level 4 you must have killed 5.
This means you must kill twice what you have killed in the previous level to go up to the next one.

Each level you go up you gain a +5 to damage bonus and +2 hit points.

Sounds good, but the damage system seems a bit funky. Not exactly the norm, but it could prove to be unique. That is, unless I'm making a mistake because I'm new here.

That's because the damage system is brand new, it's not based on anything else. Later I'll make a post with a full example with cover.

We could also use a variant where we use an accuracy roll instead of a miss when below a minimal damage, but the we would have to start adding a marksmanship skill to characters.

This is an experimental kind of roleplay. So many changes will take place as the game progresses. That's why I need you to ask questions.

Hey LTG-

I am curious. Why didn't you just adopt a system like Twilight 2000 (a post-apocalypse war game) or the Morrow Project (yet another post-apocalpyse game), or even Star Frontiers (a space game)?

Note that you may wish to look at what Carnage Lee has done at play@yog-sothoth in his dark harvest campaign that uses Call of Cthulhu mutants rising.

Hell, you might even use Fallout pen and paper rules.

Unless you are plannning to build a new combat system, might as well use something that is off the shelf. No use rebuilding the wheel if you don't have to.

looks interesting Gonzy, but i'm pretty much fully commited already. don't want to neglect other stuff.

gl with the RP.

Whoops! Sorry gents. Got stocked up with a lot of work this week and I have to see a way to get it all done by Wednesday. I promise that after that I'll get started on it.

Welsh: It's not bad Idea to use an existing combat system, but the Idea I had was to create a new one. Anyways, time restrains may force me to use an existing one.

Sorry for the delays. With any luck we should be able to start within next week, if enough players are available.

Ok, I'm finally free again but there is still seems to be not enough players. I'll post some developments on the roleplay during this weekend. If there are no more player we will start next week with two players anyway (provided Plasma-pip is still interested). If I don't try this now I'll never do it. Other players can join up as the games progresses.

Ok. The game is still accepting players. I am just a bit reluctant to start a game with only 2 players.

Anyone else?

Anyway the Idea is still open. So post opinions and let me know If any of you get some spare time for it.

Cheers.

Interested, but I have to admit I'm not sure how to do stats and such. Never done anything with stats online.

Ok, to calculate hit points we will use this site: http://invisiblecastle.com/rolldice.py

Instructions on how to make a roll are all there.

I'll later post some more instructions on how to play using the combat stats for this game. For those of you that never played using rolls, don't worry, it's not that complicated.

With more players now we should start playing in about a week or less.

I'm in, but I don't know much about creative writing or know that much about guns and warfare.

Well, first I would have to send a PM to the other players to see if they are still interested, and then it would have to be a really basic roleplay, not one as complicated as I wanted. We'll see.

I always wanted to get this roleplay started, but for one reason or another I was never able to do it.

Ok, the basics of the roleplay, and yes, you can forget all the other rules about combat posted before.

First let me explain combat.

The only rolls in the game will be attack rolls. Each weapon will cause a certain amount of damage, and each enemy will have certain amounts of hit points, and so will you. When the enemy hit points reach zero, the enemy is dead, when your character's hit points reach zero, you will be dead.

First you must make a marksmanship roll, this will determine if the character hits the target or not, then, if you hit the target, you will make a damage roll, this determines how much damage, the target receives.

Easy enough? Ok, now we move to the general development of the game.

The game will consist on writing the actions and decisions of your character, your character's decisions will have consequences dictated by, let's call it God, this means the game master, this means me. So, choose your actions carefully in the game. Now and then your character will be put in a situation when he will have to make a choice.

Furthermore you will write what is going on on your character's mind, his fears, memories, etc. So we make the story more interesting by adding further development of the character by each player.

When you are not making choices of your own, you are following orders, and yes, the only officer class character in the game is owned by the game master. All other non taken characters are played by him as well. And tension between the characters may occur.

Now, don't feel like it's too much, just write and have fun, if you post something you weren't supposed to I’ll let you know. No strikes, I swear. :)

Tomorrow I will post the remaining stats on the character's section, and start the IC thread.
