"Memory could not be written"

This generic error often shows up when I'm trying to play older games with requirments of windows 95/98, changing compatibility mode does nothing and I have no idea what the error could be. Have been trying to google but nothing helpful shows up.

Any suggestions of what might be wrong?

Running XP SP3.
 
Hmm, weird. I run xp sp3 and never had a problem with running fallout, never needed compatibility mode. I even have them both installed in a folder directly on c. Might be directx related, might be your video card, might be something else. Try updating all your drivers and reinstalling the games.

The way I do it is copy master.dat, critter.dat(and patch000 for f2) and the data folder, and the exe file(named falloutw.___ iirc, don't remember f2 program name) directly into a folder from the disk and run the exe file, the cfg file should be created and filled automatically(though you have to edit it to get the paths correct) and the game should run if all is well.

What's your hardware? They run just great for me on a p4 3.0ghz with a geforce fx5500 graphics card. Any other info you can think might help too

EDIT: when you say "older games," I assume this error comes up for many older games you try to play. If that's the case, definitely look into driver updates for your hardware and see if that helps. Might even try using ccleaner or your program of choice to fix any registry errors and clean the computer up a bit. I play old games quite frequently and never have a problem that isn't directly related to the games themselves.
