Experience a Post-Apocalyptic World Unlike Any Other in Metro 2033, A New Benchmark in Atmosphere and Immersion

AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Mar 19, 2010 - THQ Inc. (NASDAQ:THQI) today announced the release of Metro 2033™, a landmark title in the first-person genre. Based on a novel by the Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 combines classic first-person-shooter action with elements of survival horror and intelligent plot and character development not seen before in gaming, to create a true genre original. Metro 2033 is now available to purchase at retail stores around the world for both the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows®.

"Metro 2033 offers gamers an experience unlike any other," said Richard Williams, Vice President, THQ Global Brand Management. "We’ve taken an extremely deep, engaging story, an incredible Russian twist on the post apocalyptic setting, and wrapped it up in some of the very best cinematic, first person action gameplay. The world of Metro 2033 is going to be talked about for years to come, just like other great gaming worlds that have gone before."

Metro 2033’s unique atmosphere is made possible by the brand new technology powering it. The proprietary 4A Engine produces some of the most spectacular visuals yet seen on Xbox 360, while PC owners will benefit from a host of advanced features that ensure Metro 2033 sets a new standard in graphical fidelity.

Metro 2033 has already earned critical acclaim around the globe, and is set to become the definitive ‘Sleeper Hit’ of 2010 as early reviews point to a modern classic:

Teh greatest game we have never played!!!111!!

Just like every game in the past 4 years...

Seriously, this looks like a "Add game name" template.

Been playing it.

It looks like an imitation build of STALKER, which is explained by the 4A Games dev-team (break off of GSC a year before STALKER was released and worked on the X-Ray engine).

The THQ and corporate endorsement nets this game some pretty heavy visual effects. Level architecture and atmosphere is very well thought through. Guns that use homemade ammunition actually use the old formula of smoking gun-powder, obfuscating view after a few shots. Minor problems with A.I being a little dense when it comes to action (Think Stalker), "Bandit" levels are a bit streamlined, have multiple paths but ultimately all end the same.

Story is essentially railroaded, with no alternative choices, very FPS-shooter-esque. "Do you want to come with me? (YES/NO), you hit NO and then you can't continue the game in any other way then to go back to that main-plot NPC and following them. New NPCs that come in as soon as your 'friend' gets murdered. Etc."

Great new take on anomalies. Some religious ideas in terms of having souls speaking through pipes, "heaven and hell being atomized".

Equipment is virtually nonexistent, no bartering system (aka, you cannot buy rope, water, armor, or food), all ammunition can be found, and military rounds are used as currency, which you can trade for other items such as gas mask filters (The gas mask is ingeniously executed in this game, you draw a marker on your watch for how much time your filter will last, and you can hear by your breathing), and weapon attachments.

Overall: Worth a look, nothing special or amazing in writing or narrative at all, but atmosphere is very good. Especially their design of the underground 'station-towns'. They're not afraid to include children, and their entire plethora of innocence, children drawing mutants on walls, as scary monsters with black crayons, and telling stories to each other about them, and such. Men sitting around sharing tales, playing music, trading, drinking vodka, playing card games, women complaining, etc. The towns feel alive.

(7.0/10)

Conclunote: Don't play it if you can't stand first person shooters.

i'm going to play it in the hopes that it fills that void that CoP didn't. i loved that game, but it was just too short.

I really liked the first book (the book the game is based on). I don't really like FPS but I'll try that one out when it's cheaper.

I got a mail telling me my order is underway.

Don't even remember pre-ordering it, lol... But ok, I don't mind. At least it's not as expensive as an X-Brick game and chances are it will have some nice mods soon enough.

“Bioshock crossed with Half-Life in Fallout’s world”
this could easily be translated to "it's an FPS game in a post apocalyptic world" which is exactly what any of these games have in common with Metro 2033.

I was sceptical at first, because it sounded like a cheap STALKER rip-off but after about half an hour, i started to enjoy it more and more.
It has a lot of scripted sequences, where things will happen without or only a little bit of influence from the player.
While some of the levels are indeed a bit boring or generic (Bandits and Fascists come in mind here) a few are really well made, like in chapter 3, where you follow a guy through a tunnel, followed by strange visions.

The setting itself was quite appealing for me, but the storyline became more and more borked up the closer to the end i was, imho.

I'd say, if you can get it cheap, then you should buy it.

My first playthrough was kinda short, it took me only about 6 hours to finish it on normal.

CoP too short? This is a ten hour game.. even less according to some people on the Steam forums.

edit : and according to the poster above me :)

:( that's sort of lame. i played through CoP in about the same amount of time and thought it was way too short and simplified compared to SoC. i'll probably get it anyways, those russians need more money to develop good games that the US simply aren't making. despite my complaint of being too short, i'd much rather replay CoP than play bioshock 2 at all.

oh, and a big deal of my gripe with CoP is the anti-climactic ending. you meet strelok, which is the PC from the first 2 games and then you get on a helicopter while fighting off some monolith guys. i guess i was hoping for an end boss battle or something. i took all this time to save my stuff for a huge ending conflict and then the game was over and i still had it all. i mean, i spent all this time saving stuff and modding my weapons out, finding tools for people, etc, and this was it.

Uhmm.....are the children mentioned above killable, or am I high sci-fi again ?
You cant use weapons inside a town from what I have seen. So no I dont think you can kill them. But I am not all to far in the game.

For a shooter its really cool. Even when I have to say that the story is going a bit to fast for my taste. Its like you rush trough all of it without giving the story much time to react on the player. Your village gets attacked, 2 min. later you are on your way out to warn all others, again 2 min. youre on your way to fighting ... etc. etc. its not a issue at all that you get railroaded heavily trough since the background of the story is pretty good but I can see why so many think that its "to short" (max of 7 ours from what I have read) considering how fast you go trough all chapters. For it that its based on a 700 page book they really could have done here a bit more. Dunno. It is how it is. And its definetly not "bad". And that you can get it for les then 20 bugs on amazon thx to a coupon offered from Amazon makes it really worth to buy but I am not sure if that only counts for Germany.

So by saying that the game really offers some good shooter gameplay. Though best part is when you get in small conversations (really small) like with that hooker which you pay with some amunitoin (its the curency in game )and then suddenly ... well that part you should find out by your self ;)

Did anyone who already played the game also read the books? Is the story similar? Or is it dumbed down? How'd you compare those?

man. is there a way to actually WALK in this game? there seems to be only run and sprint. am i missing something or am i meant to be uncomfortably fast and herky-jerky throughout this thing?

Yeah, I couldn't find a way to walk either, but crouching seems to slow you down enough to actually avoid making too much noise.

I also realized that the three-dot LEDs on your wrist are a noise-meter. I originally thought they were for telling me the condition of the current filter I was wearing, but then I realized that didn't make sense. Green meant you're hidden, yellow means caution, red obviously means you're stepping on stuff or making a lot of noise.

Oh, and a side-note and interesting fact.. if you sprint while wearing a gas-mask, you hyperventilate, and actually cause the filter to wear out faster, thus reducing your operating time quite a bit.. and if your gas mask gets perforated, damaged, or scratched enough by creatures, it can rip or tear and become unusable.

meh.

this game is shite and unplayable by my standards (things like going "OH FUCK I'M RUNNING WHERE AM I OH SHIT BAD GUYS MY SHIT IS MOVING TOO FAST OH ANOTHER BAD GUY OH FUCK" is nowhere near my definition of "fun"). fuck this generation of gaming. fuck kids that need a run-speed and super-fast mouse for everything. fuck video games. fuck earth. fuck air. fuck atoms. and fuck you.
