Metro 2033 ships to retail

Living in the past won't make today's games better.
Ahh hell, nothing can make today's games better as long as publishers keep being demanding shitheads.

meh.

this game is shite and unplayable by my standards (things like going "OH FUCK I'M RUNNING WHERE AM I OH SHIT BAD GUYS MY SHIT IS MOVING TOO FAST OH ANOTHER BAD GUY OH FUCK" is nowhere near my definition of "fun"). fuck this generation of gaming. fuck kids that need a run-speed and super-fast mouse for everything. fuck video games. fuck earth. fuck air. fuck atoms. and fuck you.
Its a shooter though ... so they are inherently fast. Doom or Quacke games are usualy faster. Not to mention Unreal or anything comparable. Half Life 1 and 2 have been fast as well.

If HL is fast, then I'll eat my foot.

:proceeds to eat own foot:

No. HL is not fast.

On the other hand, every sane person on this earth needs the occasional Quake3 and unreal tournament match! Keeps the adrenaline pumping

Today's shooters... well... they get boring quick. I'll wait for some gameplay vids and some more opinions before deciding on this one! (providing that my pc can play it :-P)

Unreal Tournament 1on1 against a very skilled player is something amazing to do. Even the final boss in Unreal Tournament is a pretty tough fight, and you find yourself in the middle of it rushing at god-like speed through every power-up to get the advantage.

If Metro 2033 is a similar experience to Half-Life, I might consider getting it... Nah, cross that, today's shooters are pretty boring.

like, ok...but i don't even need the sprint button because the default walk speed is faster than the people i follow who are running. it's just fucking dumb.

It's a excellent FPS, sadly a bit short. Though it's not as much of a shock as CoP, where it suddenly ends.

The lack of quicksaves can make things a bit tense and/or annoying, it's quite possible to sneak through most areas with a bit of guile.

A more in depth RPG in the Metro world would be pretty cool though. Stalker could of benefitted from the polish the characters have in this, when people drink vodka, they don't empty the bottle all over their chest before it reaches their lips.

As for 'this new generation of gamers' , it's not any different from any other FPS of the last two decades. I certainly don't recall moving too fast. I guess i enjoyed playing it too much to worry about walking everywhere :? , the guys on a mission, i don't see why he wouldn't jog about. Whenever i needed to sneak, i crouched.

Doesn't quite compare to Stalker, it's very much just a FPS with some conversations and a pretty good verisimilitude, all the lights can be turned shot off, areas are all detailed and interesting for the most part. The surface is very creepy.

When enemies die, they don't ragdoll ridiculously, they have animations but are still affected by physics. It's quite fun to sneak up on a guy and throw a knife in his back and watch him drop dead, or cough in pain and hit the deck.

The main downside is the mutants are annoying to fight, their fast and low, meaning your firing straight down at the floor when they get up and close. It just ends up a mess of firing and spinning around. Like fighting dogs in Stalker but worse.

I,ve been trying to read Metro 2034 with google translator, quite a challenge at times.

It requires a Dx10 VGA.

Yeah, right...

Keep your crappy shooter mister vendor!

no it doesn't, i just played it with dx9
I didn't say it required DX10!

I said it requires a DX10 VGA. You can play it in Windows XP, only you have to have a DX10 VGA.

What VGA do you have?

Honnestly, if you don't have a DX10 graphic card, don't even consider getting this game because it just won't be powerful enough, even for DX9...

I'm running a GTX 285 in Very High details with DX 10 and my framerate varies from 20 to 70 fps...

But it's still a pretty cool shooter ( but that may be because of the cool setting and atmosphere though, haven't decided on that yet ).

The game is out for the 360. Any reasonable DX9 VGA should play the game no problem. Unless, of course, its graphical quality is much better on the PC.

It is.

The 360 is the equivalent of "Normal" settings on PC...

On very high ( DX10, without the DX11 effects and without antialiasing ) the game looks like this :

I don't like the artistic direction. But the graphics are good.

Again, if the console version is the "normal" version of the PC, then a reasonable Dx9 VGA should handle the game. It's either badly optimized, or artificially heavy to make people buy more expensive VGA.

Because there really isn't any reason to by anything above a high end Dx9. Most games run fine or perfect in that, and only a select few don't. And the only ones I can remember that don't are Dx10 only. And they are like... Three?

In my experience. Of course.

the game looks and feels great for sure. i wish it were an RPG. :(
Yes! Thats what I am thinking all the time when playing the game be it inside the tunnels or the short parts outside in moscow. It just screams "this could be a great Fallout-RPG-shooter if done right". I mean if there has to be already a shooter RPG in the Fallout setting this would be a extremly interesting approach with the way how gasmask and anomlies work in that game. The mood is really great. Sadly a company like Bethesda without much experience in that field was working on a shooter experience.

Some parts of the game are fucking frustrating though ... the libary with those gorila mutations that take some endless stream of amuntion before they go down ...

Or the part I am in right now where you have to clean some area of strange blobs/anomalies ... but your partner is always going down and thus you have to reload it ... meh.

But besides that the game is cool.

The console code was heavily optimized to run on console hardware better. That's why it performs so well comparatively.

Don't know about DX10 > 11, but 9 > 10 is a noticeable jump. As a performance enthusiast, i can tell you your FPS doesn't really improve, but things look really really nice. Shadows especially. That bit in Crysis where your in the jungle and two sides of the valley are separated by a creek and you find the first dead scientist? Its a massive difference.

I personally would buy DX10 (Well, 11 Actually) now, because the trend has started which will phase out DX9. If you buy a older card, your just gonna get more incompatibility.
