Modified Australian release this year, say retailers

GamerChip reports that a trimmed version of Fallout 3 will be available in Australia as expected:
Fallout is an apt name for the upcoming game. The Australian media has been whipped into the closest thing to a frenzy we have here for the gaming industry over the ban on the upcoming Bethesda title Fallout 3. But according to EB and Game representatives, Australia will be receiving the game, albeit in a modified format. The new, friendlier version, will have the drug use removed that saw the game banned in the first place. Both EB and Game are currently taking pre-orders for the title. One representative from Game, contacted this Thursday night, (after hammering home the "do you want to pre-order?" spiel) said that he had read on their internal communications only an hour before that Fallout 3 would be released this year.

It looks as though both stores are holding fast. Let's hope that this is a reality rather than their misplaced optimism.
Update: Kotaku Australia pretty much declares this non-news:
The piece mentions that the game is due out later this year, with all drug references removed. Apparently this info came from "EB and Game representatives". That's great, EB Games and GAME can say whatever they want, but until I hear word from the OFLC, Red Ant or Bethesda, Fallout 3 is still refused classification.

There's also mention that the two retailers are taking preorders, yet, as far as I can tell, the title remains in exile from EB's Oz site. Even if they are, why wouldn't they? That's what retailers do - they take your money. If they have to refund it later, they'll cross that bridge when the come to it.

Saying the game is "confirmed" is wishy-washy anyway. It's unlikely Bethesda won't create an edited version of Fallout 3 for our market, and perhaps others like Germany. It's not a matter of if, but when, and the degree of content that's altered.
Spotted on the BGSF.

I'm wondering though, why are we only hearing about this from second- and third-hand sources? Why no word from Bethesda on the whole thing? Press release, comment, assurance, something? Is it just not how it's done? Or did I miss it?

Australia is a beautiful place, but Fallout3 became the main reason why I don`t want to live there ;-]

What? They removed the drugs? Doesn't this destroy the game balance?

What about the excessive gore and dismemberment? Oh, thats right, no one gives a shit about that. Fantasy drugs are more severe than obscene violence.

Dude. We have to teach the children to be above the influence when they're committing armed robbery*. You don't want them screwing up or something.

* Guns don't kill people. Video games kill people.

I hear that OSS used to have a training facility in Bethesda, maybe it is haunted, or something?

Or maybe it ISN'T the way it is done over there?

I think it was that the 'morphine' used in the game actually has the name 'morphine' written on it than the other drugs in the game, i.e. jet, mentats or stimpacks.

If all use of drugs are removed in FO3 Australian version, then it destroys the game balance because then the characters can't use anything to heal them anymore..

Luckily, D&D have healing potions...maybe the OFLC need to take a look what's in these healing potions...??

I think it's safe to assume that they'll only change the names of the (real-life) chems and perhaps the small pics of them that one gets to see in the PipBoy3000.

Since I'm not buying the game, and since I'm not living in Australia, I don't give a rat's arse anyway.

BTW: isn't Australia a penal colony? Maybe the OFLC is simply afraid that all the criminals over there will undergo bad influences when to shoot up some virtual morphine and stuff? You can't be too careful with Australians. They're all bad, bad criminals we Europeans didn't want in our backyard any longer, you know?
