Monkey Island Series

ok. so quick background:

i hate most videogames with a passion. i love Fallout 1, 2 (and kinda like Tactics), Arcanum and don't love but enjoyed terribly the game Planescape: Torment.

now...aside from the kid stuff i grew up with (Atari, NES, SuperNES, Com64 adventure and text-based cRPG's) i haven't really come across much which has kept my interest...until today. i got Curse of Monkey Island rolling and i kinda love it. it reminds me of those point n' click adventure games i played as a kid on the Com64. i'm likely going to get all the other ones but was wondering how you all rank the games from best to worst.

i'm guessing the first is going to be voted the highest, but how do you guys feel about the special edition?

The special edition is basically Secret of Monkey Island, the first one. You can even switch off the new graphics and voice acting and play it as the original, with the click of one button.

The voice acting and graphics aren't bad, tho', I enjoyed playing it as a new-fangled game. The dialogue and puzzles are still exactly the same, and the interface is basically the same, but slightly better.

Most of the classic series is great. I've not heard much good of the new Tales of Monkey Island series, but haven't played it yet.

Tales of Monkey Island is cool, although I can only judge the first episode in the series. It's easier than I remember the originals being when I first played them, although I noticed I had a hint option set to very frequent in the end and didn't know it so that may have had some effect. They seemlessly integrated the hints into the game, apparently.

In any case, the story looks good, the characters are still as good as they used to be and it's well done. The only complaint is that every episode is really, really short. I think it took me 2.5-3 hours to finish the first one start to finish.

I've heard some complaints about the flat secondary characters, but I don't get that complaint. Aren't flat, humorous characters that play a small role the entire point of the game?

And yeah, I think the first one is the best, the third game might be better than the second one, though. The 4th is the worst game, although it was still pretty fun and good.

Man. We are so fucking alike. :?

In short:

The second one is the best (general gameplay/puzzles), but the first one comes close.
Curse of Monkey Island has the best graphics and plays really intuitive as well (good interface).
Escape from Monkey Island sucks.

Done. 8-)

thanks dooooods! yeah, i wasn't much looking forward to 4 after i saw it used the Grim Fandango engine. i actually loved everything about G.F. but that crappy 3-D engine just killed it for me. annoyed the piss out of me.

anyway, the "papapishu" thing has consistently brought a literal LOL! out of me each time (i'm in the beginning of chapter 4, on CMI.

I loved all of the MI games.

Hard to believe that there was a time that Lucas Arts made games that were actually worth playing!!

You should give Day of the Tentacle a try.

I like S&M: Hit the Road the best. I had been watching the cartoons before I ever even knew there was a game however.

As for The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, there's actually an achievement for the 360 version for if you play through the entire game using the old school stuff, I thought that was pretty rad.

Nr. 2 was the best imo with the first one coming in very close. The third was good too but the fourth wasn't very memorable. I can't even remember finishing it.

I like the new special edition and thought that the voice acting and art-style was rather good.

btw: I believe that Day of the tentacle will get a Special Edition next. Notice that there is a tentacle-totem by the giant monkey head, whereas in the original there's a totem of sam & max :o .

i have all the old LucasArts games now. read about Schafer, Gilbert and all the old stuff. great shit. can't wait to play 'em all. guess scummvm is the best option to run 'em all properly? i'm using it to run CIM right now and it's tits.

also, i declare my new avatar to be named "Twinkie Island" and so this post not be rendered irrelevant in future times, here is the avatar i am sporting on this very day:

The second Monkey Island is the best in the series, then 1st, then CMI.

There is one dialog during the sword fight in CMI that always makes me laugh:

Enemy: "Every enemy I met, I've annihilated!"

Guybrush: "Ahhhh... I once found some gold but it was only electroplated?"

:D

One more observation: How come you never played Lucas Arts games? They are such classics. I mean you are gaming since C64. I'm intrigued :)
