Moving to Beirut, Lebanon

Well, I've finally decided to leave this shithole of a country (Bosnia) for something nicer. For some reason Lebanon always appealed to me, and now I've got a job offer there.

I really like the fact that the country is religiously and ethnically mixed, has rich history, Mediterranean climate, and is IMHO the only true democracy in the Middle East. Oh, and they drink shitloads of coffee, just like me.

Discuss...

Good for you.

I've moved from one shithole country (Poland) to some better looking and smelling shithole country (England).

Well first off best of luck to you and hopefully you find what you're looking for. In my experience it's always good to take a chance and try something completely new and relocating to a different country is definitely a big change. And if there's a career opportunity, even better. What's the job? Do you know anyone there? How are you going to go about living arrangements?

I moved to Chicago from Belgrade 10 years ago. My parents have always planned for a U.S. university education for me but the war in '99 prompted me to move earlier, during high school. For the near future I'll definitely be staying here, but there's a good chance I'll have the opportunity to live and work somewhere in Asia, preferably Tokyo. Would I take it? Uh yes... in a heartbeat!

Anyway, back to you. I agree with the whole diversity factor of Lebanon but I'm a little surprised that a Bosnian, who I assume lived there through the 90s, would be eager to go with the Middle East. How do you feel about the stability of the region? But then again, where's stable nowadays? Heh, we're heading for Road Warrior times, worldwide pretty soon it feels.

Best of luck. I made the easy move, Mexico to Boston.

Still Lebanon should be nice, I've had a few friends from there and they where all open minded, intelligent and sensitive people. Also Lebanese food is amazing, so that should make the transition easier.

Lebanon might be slightly better than Bosnia in that only half of the people are trying to shoot you instead of all the people trying to shoot you - But I wouldn't call it 'nicer'...

No no, our optimistic friend Ratty here is implying that your forum-ing days will soon be over... due to the highly likelihood that you will be exploded once you move. :D

....

"dodji purgeru!"

Wuss. Why not act to improve your own country? Have you no sense of loyalty? I hate people like you.

Aaahahaha! Not too familiar with life in the Balkans are we?

My own main exposure to the Balkans was Bure Baruta (or Balkan Cafe) which was a movie I watched during a film festival. It gave me the impression that there is a lot of socially accepted violence, which is similar to the North of Mexico where I grew up.

Could always move to the Americas, we're a land of immigrants y'know. Lebanon might be too much country to handle, especially when being ground under the tracks of Merkava tanks.

See if you can get some nice pictures of StG.44s in action, Lebanon is the only nation in the world which still have these weapons in operational status.

The only place I'd live in USA is San Francisco, and I didn't look for a job there yet so... I'll take Lebanon for now. As for merkavas, they didn't do so hot the last time around, did they?

Right, and when I'm done with that I'll invent perpetum mobile and faster than light travel.

Fair enough, though it's kinda hard to post at Internet forums from beyond the grave.

I'm sure my 1337 intrawebz skills will pass on to the next life so there. In the meantime, I promise to think of you all as I'm having delicious Lebanese food at a beachfront restaurant in the company of a dark-skinned beauty :P

See one war, you've seen 'em all. I'm not terribly worried, but just in case I do get stuck over there if Israel attacks again, I'll make sure to stay away from bridges, airports, schools, power stations, apartment buildings and such, as these seem to be their preferred targets. UN posts also. Oh, and thanks for well-wishing. :)

Ahaha, you got me there. I've never been impressed with that series of vehicles anyways.

By the way, are you by chance Muslim? Don't bother answering if you wish to remain anonymous.

I'm an agnostic, of mixed ethnicity. You might say I'm Bosnia in a person, because I'm a Serb/Croat/Bosniak mix (Orthodox/Catholic/Muslim). I don't declare myself a member of a particular nationality, other than Bosnian (not Bosniak), which isn't officialy recognized. Talk about irony, being unable to declare oneself a Bosnian and Herzegovinian, being born and living there. One more reason to leave.

Cool. Got a few Lebanese friends.

By "friends" I mean a chick from high school I haven't seen since 2002, and Twinkie, who isn't completely Lebanese nor likes me very much.

In all seriousness, tho', sounds great.

Why not come to merry old England. Why, we have.... um... Public.

Ok screw that, good luck in Lebanon.
