My father is getting old....

In march. And he always talks about his dream PC that he can't afford.
I have the capability and the money, or as much as I could get.
He wants to play Spore and Starcraft 2. I don't know the specs required as of yet neither does anyone else.
But here's the plan, based on your best guesses on what is needed.
I have $2000 to make him a PC to show him that he really is appreciated. so he can play Spore and Starcraft 2, I need some info on what to get together on your best educated guesses.

Slightly on a budget but still wanna do it,
IES

P.S. This particular machine, I an unable to build onto. It's gonna have to be from the ground up kinda thing.

All I can say is that SCII will be compatible with, but won't require DX10.

Other than that, I don't see how anyone can really make an educated guess right now. Hell, neither game even has a release date set and I'm fairly sure their engines are unknown/in-house too. How would anybody know?

Well even a starting machine that I could build onto at a later date would suffice as well. I've asked several tech guys about my current machine and they say the same thing "It's not the greatest machine for upgrades.....so buy this and this and this and this and this refrigerated beverage holder"

The part merchants here are hurting for business so they are will to hock crap to me and call it gold. Looking for online sources at least. I refuse to by pre-built for obvious reasons. I am not made of money.

Well if there is no such thing as a best educated guess, let's just give me a good start with "easy to upgrade" manuals.

2000 is heaps of money.

For $2100 Australian I got:

GeForce 8800gts.
4gb DDR2 *800mhz
Conroe 6600
Antec Sonato II
Standard keyboard and mouse
200GB hard drive
19" screen
DVD burner

And this was all a year ago.

<EDIT>

an Geforce 8800 of any sort will still last you for two years to come before you have to start toning down your graphics settings.

Lately, a lot more games are dependent on RAM rather than processor speed

I know this isn't contributing really, but I thought it needed to be said. That is the sweetest thing I've heard this week and I commend you on what you are doing. SCII looks like the specs won't be too terribly harsh, I think your goal should be to aim for Spore specs, and then SCII will probably be playable on those.

Yeah, I don't really see the problem in that either.

The fairly reliable YouGamers hardware specs has a high-end computer for 1150 USD. That's with 3.0 Ghz, 8800 GTS, 320 GB hard disc, 2 GB SDRAM (seriously, unless you have Vista, you don't need more than 2 GB). I'd be surprised if that computer couldn't at least run Spore and SCII.

With 2000 USD, you could probably easily build a computer that still runs top-of-theline games in 2009.

Right on the money (pun intended). 2grand will get you far. Despite what the requirements of these games, a 2k computer of today will certainly run the games of tomorrow.

I'll add one thing to the above, I_eat_supermutants, if you build the above computer, stick in the Radeon HD 3870 X2, which I hear is boss, I can almost guarantee you you'll be able to play Spore and StarCraft II. Of course, you'd have to wait for Spore's specs to be sure (SC II should be no problem), but I doubt it'll be DX10-exclusive.

I would wait !
There is no release date for Star Craft 2 or Spore .
you might also want to wait until the Geforce 9 series are out .

Ive heard the Geforce 9 will still have the same core as the 8, so its just a rebrand.

Cant remember where, but its the internet so it must be true.

I'd go out on a limb here, but given both companies' past releases (Blizzard in particular), I'm guessing they'll try to ensure that as many people as possible will be able to play their games.
Therefore, expect a high level of scalability, and in SC2's case in particular, surprisingly low specs for the top quality experience.

Maybe,I am not well informed about either of the graphics cards (the new ati or geforce 9th series). But it still wouldn't hurt to wait a couple of mounths more .

Yes that is right but i am guessing that he wants to play the game on high quality . :)

2000$ will get you far beyond a good pc.

hell, it probably falls under the 'waste' section.

but knock yourself out.

I just say that if I were you, I would wait for the GeForce 10 series. :boy:

Seriously, I am sure you can buy a very good gaming computer with that money as stated before me. Just be sure you don't get fooled when buying.
