My game keeps crashing whenever I try to leave the area. What do I do?

So I'm really late in the game. I'm at that church where the master is and I'm ready to kill him. I'm going up the stairs and my game crashes. Great. I guess I'll go to Mariposa Crashes. My biggest mistake was that I only used 1 file for quick saving and loading. If there is anyway to fix this WITHOUT starting a new game, please tell me. [BTW I'm using the Steam version]

I have started a new game, much to my dismay. BUT I will leave that save file just in case someone gets me an answer.

Have you tried a different computer? I know it sounds weird, but I've had Steam games - even modern ones - behave differently for me on different computers. Laptop vs desktop, AMD GPU vs Nvidia, etc. Games aren't supposed to do this, but they do.

If you're toward the end of the game then your maps may have been corrupted. You could try replacing them with known good versions in your save directory, but there's no guarantee it'll work and it resets all the map variables too.
