My monitor is dying...

It's been getting really dark lately (I'm sure it's not just the settings) and I was wondering if anyone knew any way to magnetize the screen or something to make it brighter, if only temporarily.

Uh, well... sure! Go ahead.. magnetize the screen. Remember those pre-VGA days? When screen savers were actually there to prevent the 'burning' in of the screen?

Magnetizing your screen is one extremely funky way to turn your screen into swiss cheese. :D I've tried it... once or twice, just for the fun of it.. it won't harm the system much. But it wreaks havoc on LCD monitors..

To make your monitor PERMANENTLY brighter... boost the power input by a few amps... bask in the glow of your own personal 19-inch sun!!

After this.. you might have to wait for an hour or so before your monitor fades down and become usable again. It won't ever function properly agin unless it's juust barely below overheating temperature.

If you take the case off your monitor there are several little adjusters which are slot head screws. You need a manual to find out which is which but once you do take a small screw driver and tweak that screw. Make sure the monitor is unplugged and has been sitting for long enough to not be charged any more otherwise you'll get a rather nasty shock.

Failing that take it to a monitor repair shop and get ripped off

Actually I found a better solution than electrocuting myself. Someone I know showed me a link where I can get a new 17" monitor for only $50, so that's what I'll do.

Hey if you take, say, a neodymium magnet to your screen and press the degauss button (if you have one) the monitor will stablize in its new magnetic surroundings and look just fine until you take the magnet AWAY from the screen, which will start screwing up until you press the degauss button again.

Well I have one monitor with a busted line transformer and another one suffering from a pin cushion effect but I'm gonna do them up just fine. (First is NCD and second is Sony)

Suggestion: a lot of people and businesses are upgrading to flatscreens, so there is beginning to be an monitor surplus. I picked up a wicked Sony 17", which does 1600x1200@75hz, for 40 bucks. Hooked it up to my G-Force 2, and there you are. It's great for Fallout, and even DVDs.

The one I'm looking at goes up to 1600x.... whatever and has a maximum refresh rate of 160Hz

Ooo... once you've tasted (seen) perfectly flat monitors (not LCD), where, if you're used to bowed screens it looks like the screen's edges are actually bending outwards, you can't go back...

I took a look at my old 15" screen and WOW, it looks curved... maybe that's what caused my astigmatism...

I didn't know they made 17" monitors that went up to that resolution. I hate running in any mode with a frequency less than 85hz now... but I remember using a 15" (14"?) that was supposed to only go up to 800x600, but by some driver mishap (my first video drivers that came with the computer), I was able to run at 1024x768 @ (get this) 45hz interlaced. It's pretty bad when you see flickering when looking directly at thinly-lined graphics...

But I had to have my 1024x768...

Well you can go up to 160hz at lower refresh rates but what is important is how it operates at higher resolutions. 85hz is the minimum for flickerless viewing, though 75hz is sometimes acceptable to some people. I'm currently running 1600x1200@85hz, but my old monitor ran at 1600x1200@75hz, and I would actually run at a lower res just for the 85hz...

I probably won't take it up above 1024x768 anyway so refresh rates shouldn't really be a problem. What does worry my is that the page says it has .26 dpi. It might be a typo, but still...
