New Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights Planned

Atari has confirmed that it is planning to develop more titles in the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights franchises for the future, though no release date has yet been set for either game.

Am I excited for or terrified at the prospect of another entry in the Baldur's Gate series? I can't decide... :?

The whole situation is eerily similar to that of Fallout. Two great entries, two mediocre spin-offs, and...
Unfortunately however, it doesn't look like the original developer behind both games will be attached to the projects as BioWare is now owned by mega-publisher EA and is said to be hard at work on getting Mass Effect 2 together.

There's always Dragon Age, right? :|

I read somewhere that Baldur's Gate 3 was announced. something about a developer hoping to work with BioWare on it, but decided to do it alone. I'll try to find the magazine I read it in.

anyways, while this might sound scary, it might also be great. what if BG3 will revive isometric rpg's?

So young, and so full of youthful optimism. Sure, of course, it won't be another FPS, we promise! Gee, where have we heard that before?

More sequels? Are all creativity dead in the gaming industry? Is that the recession talking? Oh, wait, FF 13 is coming out.., and I think there is another Mario or Zelda somewhere...

BioWare can't work on it anymore. They're EA-owned, and there's no way Atari is going to work with them, and Atari owns the computer AD&D license.

And, honestly, what the fuck is the point of a Baldur's Gate sequel now? If someone wants to do a new AD&D game in Forgotten Realms, fine, go ahead, but why the hell dig up a game you probably can't stay close to in story (the story being fairly done) and probably won't in gameplay.

Nothing wrong with just leaving it be. There were the DOS Box D&D games, then BIS/BioWare, now someone else can take it up, and make a new AD&D-based property. But Baldur's Gate? Just let it be

I see a new Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance to appear on the horizon.

I think Interplay still owns the Dark Alliance name. At least, their last 10-Q seems to indicate as much: they can't use BG, but they own DA.

More figures BG III would actually play as Dark Alliance III, but not be called that.

Bleh. If they really need to do this, the only real option is to hand it to Obsidian so MCA and JE can finish Jefferson.

that's just retarded.

Bethesda turning everything they touch into fpp is one thing (actually, they've only turned one game into fpp so far but it wasn't very surprising). NWN2 stayed true to NWN1 and I highly doubt they'd fuck NWN3 up considering NWN2 is a hit game right now with expansion packs being released and thousands of people creating their own mods.

as for BG3 anything might happen and if you want to be the pessimistic kind that assumes it will become a fpp action-fest, then go ahead.

definitely nothing wrong with leaving it be. I was perfectly fine with what Baldur's Gate games we have. I'm just saying that if someone got the idea to make BG3 then they might be interesting in doing it right too. again, it's not Bethesda we're talking about here.

Interplay have already said they're gonna make one.

I am a Baldur's Gate fanboy, but I will not get my hopes up for this. They are just using the name as a base for their own project, I am sure.

I really agree with Brother on this one. They need to reboot the D and D franchise again and start over.
