New Character Sprite Project?

Gurimu

First time out of the vault
O BOY! i just found that JS sprite editor in the downloads and I have to ask before i use it.
If i make new actor sprites (im actually a modeler/gfx artist)
Can they be used? and will they work for an actor?

I happen to have some axis and allied soldiers models i made a while back and they are kinda the first thing on my list to add as spr's. I just need to know if they will work.
(3dstudio max will auto render all the frames + directions and export to bitmap with alpha chan)

So shall I or will I end up disapointed

If that doesn't work you can also try Dak's version of Redviewer.

There was someone who posted a new critter they had put together from a model they found online, but they then deleted the post. Otherwise no one has actually finished a new character sprite though the new editors are meant for making new characters and vehicles.

If you do make some axis and allied soldiers I might actually get around to finishing my WW2 mod. What models do you have, any Brits?

I have grm and usa and most of the weaps but i doubt it would be hard to make brits and any others. since the sprites are small the skins dont have to be all that detailed.

Er what about the color layers. Could they be used with just basic tunic types to simulate other classes and countries?
so less sprs but more customization on actors.

For the Brits I'd suggest using a model with a beret rather than helmet, that way the beret can be the team colour layer.

For the Axis the whole uniform, that way you could use the same model for regular army and specialist units by changing from the grey to black or even khaki for the desert troops.

An armed hatless male with knee length (open) white raincoat would also be handy for resistance fighters, medics, scientists, civilians and secret police. Just by having the coat as the team colour layer.

Which weapons would you render them with? Perhaps a mortar rather than the spear and a proper flamethrower rather than a minigun?

Oh and in future use the edit function please.

altering the model isnt a problem. Its figuring out how to batch process it all. Lot's of anims. I can render the sequences+dirs easily enough in max but its alot of animations.(and 1 skeleton fits all)

The sprite editor heh.
I've just taken a brief run through and I read the stuff about batch processing bmps to "spz". I'm still not exactly sure how it all works but I will assume it does.
I dug into my ww2 content and I have everything but I just need to do a lil work on it(i seem to have lost some skins over the years). When the german is ready ill post some pix and maybe you can help me in proceeding with the sprite part.

Which sprite editor did you go with? I don't have either installed and have only used Dak's before. Though I know he was including batch processing.

JS sprite creator has no batch processing that i can see making it most likely horrendously time consuming to make a sprite.

Redviewer has a batch convert to zar/spz. I assume this is for importing a whole anim at once instead of frame by frame.

Whole animation, maybe whole character. Though I have to admit not having anything to test it with the whole animated sprite section instructions left me more than a little bewildered.

Hello. I've added batch processing to Sprite Creator. Now you can import all bitmaps from selected directory to collection in one moment. Also I've added a brief manual to the Readme. This may not be what you are looking for because I know nothing about bitmaps that you created. I would be glad if you could answer me few questions:
1. Does 3d studio export offsets for each bitmap or it creates all bitmaps having the same size ?
2. Can it export all bitmaps for one collection's layer, that their sum of colours doesn't exceed 256 colours ?
I forgot to mention in Readme that SC imports only uncompressed bitmaps.

ah good to know. being able to directly convert a whole sequence of images at once would make things alot easier.

1. It exports all the images to a defined size.

2. Possibly. If not there is likely a batch processor for images somewhere to convert them to a pallete. I will take a look.

and uncompressed bitmaps are fine

You have more perseverance than me if you are going to make a new FOT charachter sprite.

On the top of my list (and I think I speak for more than a few others) are Combat armor and T-51b, I'd really love to see those in the game.

Oh this whole thing opens up such possibilities.

I think an official Vault-Tec extruded suit should be #1. Then T-51b, then combat armor.

Then the Tycho-raider model, since I never took to the raiders in FOT. Plus a new model to match the Tycho description:

{100}{}{You see a man in dusty leather armor with a trenchcoat and gas mask.}
{101}{}{You see Tycho.}

A trenchcoat or duster would be all westerned-out. And, I hasten to add, an implicit swipe at an east-coast Fallout game.

Then kids and midgets. Don't forget de-goated Deathclaws. BIG radscorpions. Super-mutants with butt-scratch-and-sniff "idle" animations.

How I go on and on... and just in case there's any doubt, I'm totally serious.

I think we should give Gurimu the freedom of working in the mod that he would like to work, not charging him with a LOT of extra work...
Let the guy finish what he's doing than we make wishes. :D

You'll end up disappointed~~

dont run away from waste land after you check how many players love to play in WW2, even you want to play it youself only, it's a big work. You'll waste a lot of time.

Dont even think about this~

1. Don't double post.

edityourpost

2. It's been 4 months since Gurimu posted, he's either hard at work or already given up, you're a bit late to the party.

3. The WW2MOD and WW2 ruleset where two of the most popular mods for FOT.

4. That's neither the combat or the T51-b armour. :P

5. So what happens if the player crouches or goes prone, or even when they turn through FOT's extra two directions?
