new consoles

If you're going to limit yourself to one console, and must choose a console, go with the 360. I thought the PS3 was lacking when I 'test-drove' it. I'd buy it, but only after a few years of hardware updates and resizing. In my opinion, the 360 offers the best casual-gamer-like play, and it has Dead Rising amongst its ranks. I have yet to try out multiplayer through the PS3, but it's halfway decent with the 360. Anyways, I'll probably end up buying the PS3 sooner or later just because of Metal Gear Solid. However, you're going to want a nice tv to go with your high-priced console.

As for th Wii, my little sister has it. It's ok, but the sexual inuendos were too much, especially coming from my little sister.
 
Had some fun with the WII for a while but that is just gimmick-hell, all of the games are now throwaway ports.
 
Note: With the cut of the 60 GB PS3, also goes the backwards-compatibility. They cut out the Emotion Engine chip on the 80 gig version, slated to replace the now-discontinued 60-gig.
 
Unless you've got a ton of old PS2 games and your PS2 is knackered, or don't have room for two consoles, why would you really care about backwards compatability?

The 360 is fun, but I'd wait until the new model come out next year, they should have less technical problems.

Besides the fact that the old console will eventually go bad, and that switching between two systems can be a total pain, there is the fact that the 360's backwards compatibility, while limited in the sense that Microsoft is having to come up with emulation for virtually every title (which is why not every game is supported, but they're adding more games all the time), can apply antialiasing and display the games in higher resolution (the original Xbox is limited to 480p). As explained in jello's third link, the 360 can apply antialiasing as well as do some other things with practically no impact on performance due to the way its hardware is designed.

Anyways, as far as things go, I'm most impressed with the 360. Its GPU is a really nice piece of engineering, while the PS3's vaunted Cell processors are mostly untapped despite their theoretical power, being extremely difficult to program for amidst other things. Also, I just really like the design of the controllers, and the PS3 has only a very few exclusive titles (Heavenly Sword, FFXIII and MGS4) that really spark my interest. The 360's game lineup has more that appeals to me, although it definitely suffers from a lack of RPGs.

I don't really care much about the console itself, though. If I had the money, I'd have every console and a bitchin' PC, so I can just play the games I want to play. Being a console fanboy is really just utterly moronic. All 3 have positives and negatives, good games and games not worth a second-glance. Your decision should really be based on which has more games that appeal to you, and what's in your budget. The Wii is the cheapest, and is really quite fun, though it needs more good games, in my opinion. All I played while my friend had it was Wii Sports, RE4, and more Wii Sports.
 
Or, just buy what you can afford, since missing out on a game you want to play for some misguided ideological preference for one platform is rather foolish.

'Course, if you've only got money for one, stick with a PC. You can download porn and doodle in paint on it too.

Heh, I think it's foolish to buy a console for only one game.

Maybe it's the fact that no game has shaken my entrails in such a way to make me buy a console, but I'd rather stay with my ideology... and not become a consumer. Don't you get it? That's what they want... that's why exclusive titles are made. :freak:

I just received Burnout revenge for the 360 in the mail. HD Projector console gaming rox my sox. I just don't get the same feeling with HD Projector PC gaming, not the same feeling. Maybe it's controller vs. mouse+keyboard.

Oooh, and whatever console you buy (except Wii), Assassin's creed is out in november, and it looks awesome-ish (though they've only really hyped the 360 version so far).

Haha, that's actually the way my friends and I played it for the last generation. My friend got a PS2, my other friend got a Gamecube, and I got an Xbox. 'Course, then my friend's PS2 broke down and he bought an Xbox, ruining everything. ~_~ Bastard.

Well obviously, I didn't really mean that you should pay a few hundred dollars to play one game. It's up to the person to make the value judgment. But not buying a console because of some ideological bullcrap about one platform's "superiority" over another is total nonsense.

True, but again, that comes down to a value judgment by the consumer. My preference would definitely be for there just to be one super-console that can play any and all games. Unfortunately, we have to work within the confines of reality. Which means that poor saps like me can't afford to buy a damn PS3 just to play MGS4, Heavenly Sword, and FFXIII. 'Course, my dad does have one, and it's only a five hour drive up to San Fran....

also, if you keep your xbox standing like a tower, it has a 25% more likely chance to go defective.
