New Governmental interference

A Smooth-Skin
I have always considered myself as a centrist when it came to American politics, but these new initiatives have people like me worried that we may be heading back to the "bad old days" of heavy government meddeling in it's citizens affairs. What scares me the most has already been said in the best SW movie of them all, and i will use it to illustrate my thinking on this new wave of governmental interference. "Once down the dark path you go, forever will it control your destiny."

Congress Increases Fines for 'Indecent Broadcasts'
Could Lead to More Self Censorship

March 05, 2004
Fueled by Janet Jackson's raunchy Super Bowl halftime display and election year political posturing, Congress is likely to increase the fine for broadcasters who air indecent material from $27,000 to $500,000. FCC honcho Michael Powell had asked for an increase in the maximum fine to $275,000, but Congress pumped up his request and also made it easier for the FCC to fine individual performers, something the FCC has never done (and something that should raise some pretty big First Amendment questions). The new legislation, which passed the House Energy & Commerce Committee by a 49-1 margin, also provides for a "three strikes" provision that would call for a mandatory license-revocation hearing for any radio or TV station with three "indecency violations" on its record.

The National Association of Broadcasters opposes the legislation, but rather than lobbying directly against the bill, the broadcasters' trade group is calling for "a voluntary code of conduct" for radio and TV stations. The typical response of American business to the prospect of government intervention is self-censorship and that defense mechanism is clearly in play in this case with both the National Association of Broadcasters and the top cable providers. Although cable and satellite systems are not covered by the new legislation, the FCC has been pushing cable and satellite operators to make sure that their customers know how to turn off channels, which may carry offensive programming, and the cable operators are responding with a series of ads and public service announcements as well a notices included with cable bills.

While the media has been concentrating on a few high profile actions inspired by the wave of "anti-smut" legislation seeping out of Washington, the effects of this latest crusade against public indecency may be much more subtle and far-reaching than the dismissal of Bubba the Love Sponge and the slap-down of shock jock Howard Stern. In talking to American anime distributors who are prepping anime series for U.S. broadcast and cable systems, ICv2 has noticed a growing concern about how to deal with cultural differences between the U.S. and Japan -- a concern that may well lead to more self-censorship and editing of anime series before they are aired on the major ad-supported cable networks. While the editing of anime series for broadcast on American TV and cable systems has never gone away, it has diminished considerably, particularly since anime series became part of cable's late night lineup. But if Congress keeps the heat on, we could soon be back to the bad old days of heavy editing of some series for U.S. anime broadcasts.

If they edit some anime, by taking out sex, violence and non-American ideas, there will be nothing left.

Freedom of speech is vital for a democracy and for a well functioning society. People should know what is right and not try to impose their ideas on others.

Well. this is what happens when you send a bush to do a man's job!
Okay, I just had to say that! About that censorship crap, wtf? So everybody saw a bit of tit! So what? Did she flaunt her pussy all over the screen? Did she fuck the referee right there, in front of the crowd? What happened was an accident, and if it wasn't I couldn't care less! This is like a supersledge powerfully thrust right in the balls of freedom of speech, wich is presently squirming on the floor... don't worry, other freedoms will soon follow!
Walks away mumbling to himself "American assholes"

rumor is that they're planning to fine Howard Stern. Stern was just dropped on all the Clear Channel stations, after the government started cracking down on radio execs. If the FCC does fine Stern, it will be for nothing he hasn't been doing on the air for the last 10 years, but instead to make an example of him.

I'm sure some of you feel Stern is a part of the problem in this country. However, like him or hate him, the idea of the Federal Government telling me what I can and can't watch on Television and Radio worries me.

If you think shows like Stern should stick to non-public forms of mass media, get ready: The FCC is looking to oversee both Satellite Radio and cable TV.

It's really pretty funny when you compare Sweden (and some other European countries) and the US in this respect. The *only* thing which I can remember causing something of a moral outrage during recent years here is when some crazy nudist guy on a crappy reality show called Farmen ('The Farm') was running around naked in every episode. This was on primetime on one of the top three nationwide channels. It wasn't like a huge or long-lived outrage either, most folks just gave it a 'meh'. Even though I'd love to live on the other side of the Atlantic for some period of my life, I just feel like hugging this whole country sometimes...

Nothing pisses me off more than false morality. Are all your politicians ignorant, conservative, complex-ridden, sexually frustrated bastards, or is it just a Republican thing?

*sigh*

I just picked up a book today called, "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy." The more I read it, the more I hate Bush, this country, and the media in this country. This just increases that hate even more. I hope to God that Bush doesn't get reelected. If he does, I'm preparing for WWIII, and I'm not kidding either.

If that happens, I hope you know how to build a real good fallout shelter because duck and cover just isn't going to cut it. But I hope that people still have enough brains not to let that happen....

Er.. We're talking about Americans here...

(& before Paladin Solo (or any other "patriotic" American) starts, it's just a JOKE)

Bah, leave PS alone. He isn't even half as "patriotic" as he was when he joined NMA a couple of months ago.

Seriously, I wonder if the next administration will cancel all the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. and other civil rights-stripping acts passed under emperor W.

And Nomad, it's pretty naive to hate all the people in a country basing one's judgement on the power and political structures in it. Hate the government and the flag, not the people.

Sometimes, I almost wish there was a nuclear war, but only if I found shelter first, a long long time before (i.e http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2353756090). Sure, billions of people would die, but hey, at least we'd get rid of all the idiots (errrmm... W.. errrm...) and the Fallout universe would come true (cruisin' in the wasteland with your Highwayman and a 12-gauge blastin' raiders and keepin' the peace). Good thing I've done a lot of research about nuclear war, in case "he" gets reelected.

Oh, and Ratty: please get rid of that sig. I'll have to play some silent hill 2 to calm and comfort myself if you don't.

Okey Dokey, I hope so, Agreed (respectively)

I've still got a while before "it" is supposed to happen, so I think I'll be able to build something, or find somewhere before "it" happens.

I hate both. Well, I've got nothing against the flag. The flag never conspired with its brother to "scrub" roughly 50,000 people out of the last presidential election to swing the election in its favor in Florida. The flag didn't land softly on the board of a Gold-Mining company originally funded by Saudi Arabian Adnan Khashoggi, arms dealer to the Axis of Evil, after being booted out of the White House. No sir, the Flag is fine. It's the corrupted assholes that run this country that I hate. And as a whole, the people in this country are rude, elitest assholes. Though, one by one, they can be pretty cool people.

It's not like I'm bitter, or anything. I know I'm probably better off here than anywhere else in the world (right now, anyway), but it doesn't mean I have to like it here.

You are an idiot for thinking that that book is worth any more then the paper it is written on. A flat out, complete, total idiot that, unlike say Wooz, Sander or even Ozrat has no chance of redemption.

First of all, the "media" industry is the single most diverse market, with a HHI of 268. Automobile market is at a staggering 2,506, pharmacetuicals at 446. HHI being the most widely used measure of economic concentration. If the top ten media companies merged, it would be nowhere near as bad as the auto market.

I also find it pathetic that I am called a "bigot" for disliking certain tendancies of Islamic people, while you openly state that you "hate" 280 million people.

The singel most ironic, moronic and totally undefensible statment I have heard in my entire life.
