New version of Thompson...?

Kahgan

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
I read this topic: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10565 (see? I can post a link without messing it up!)

and decided to make a futuristic version of the Thompson...ermh, well, is it good, perfect, ugly..what improvements should be made? should I just scrap it and go bang my head into a wall?

note that it's just an earlysketchlike thing, I'm planning on modeling it too...when I get my 3dsmax skills up and running...hrm

Say, aren't you supposed to be making the map for....
This is interesting, I'd like to see what you come up with.

The thumbholes on the stock and foregrip are set at an unergonomicable height. That, coupled with the sharply angled degree that the pistol grip is set, would make for very uncomfortable handling.

Also, consider raising the stock or adding a comb to add height, or else you'd theoretically have to tilt your head to line up the sights, even if you had monstrously chubby cheeks.

Also, stick magazines are the bane for a gun chambered in .45 ACP (I can only assume that's the caliber) because the cartidge width is especially thick, meaning that twenty or so rounds would fit in a magazine of that proportion, and even then it's sticking out. Modern submachine guns alleviate this problem by having curved magazines, but they're normally 9mm.

Also, it's pretty damn ugly.

Kahgan, you coul've at least paintbucketed the thing in different shades of grey...

Gunslinger: that's right, I'm gonna look into that. See, I'm not a gun expert so that's why I need people like you to point out my mistakes

some stuff about the magazine

eh, well, yeah, I agree on that one except that it's supposed to be a drum magazine, and as I din't color it "in differant shades of grey" that isn't noticable. Maybe I should have mentioned in the first post :)

a thompson perfect? looooooooool

i bet quite a lot of police officers & WW2 officers will tell you otherwise...

anyhow, if you want ergonomics, just go for the newer generations of FN Herstal guns, mkay?

Have you ever just held a full magazine for a .45, it's heavy... Imagine a thiry round mag or a 100 round drum, let alone with the weapon. This guy I knew carried one. He said it had a lot of muzzle climb.

ok, so in general I should just scrap the thing right? well, has anyone got any better ideas? I want to "invent" a pulp fiction gun, actually more than one, but as I don't know very much about guns and how they work exept from the general principals I need help, what should I base it on? what should it look like? anyone?

I don't know that you should scrap it, Kahgan. Your design could be a prototype that never had a chance to go into widescale production. Something you find in a military lab somewhere... This is for fun after all.

The idea isn't bad, just draw it better. It could look nice in an Arcanum-style steampunk setting.

Thats really constructive Wooz...and very true! Ya Kahgan use it as one of those special guns you keep as a collector's item or sell as a novelty!

Its not like its a pistol with a rocket launcher attached or anything...

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

1. Kahgan, you make me want to cry.

Yeah, I guess that's it, just one thing.

Anyway, there's too much blank space that I'm assuming is metal and has no right to be there. The thumbholes are way, way too small to be practical . The, uh, buttstock is a bit... Clunky and too much material used there (if it's wood). Other stuff but then I'm just getting pedantic and nitpicky.

Oh yeah, you're missing a trigger and it does look like a stick magaznie. You can have a perfectly fine stick magazine in .45 and have it hold 30 rounds without being too long. It's called using a double-column or staggered magazine. They're perfectly reliable aside from some horrid example of the species. I give you the HK UMP 45 with straight magazine.

This reminds me of an idea I had a while back for a Thompson chambered in something like .30-30 that used a type of roller locking. It was just a flight of fancy though. -

Forgot to add, if you want I can link to some of my work in this thread or PM you with it. Whatever. Some of it is in Fanart if you poke around. - Colt
