well...it's about that time, no? fantasy leagues are drafting, training camp is underway, and preseason starts in a week. i thought we could get the ball rolling with a brand new thread for the season.


first thing i'd like to shout out loud is THANK GOD!!! FUCKING FINALLY!!!! in regards to Ryan Grant signing. http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d809acbdc&template=with-video&confirm=true

and also, can we please get this Favre bullshit over and done with? at first i was mad at him for the flip-flopping attitude...but now i'm just pissed at everybody involved. seriously, let's just kick Rodgers to the curb and let Favre start or get him traded to the goddamn Vikings already.


p.s. we do really need about 2 more people to make our NMA fantasy league worth it if anybody still wants to join up.
 
Favre is looking like a douchebag.
It's a business, you can't expect the Pack to outright release him, trade him to an inter-league rival, or bring him back after handing the keys to the car over to Rogers.

That being said, I would love to see Brett go to the Vikings. But as some others have said, his best fit is with the Pack.
 
It's entirely possible that the Packers will have an "open competition" between Favre and Rodgers, declare Rodgers the winner, and release Favre after the pre-season. That would allow Rodgers to start, and mess up Favre's ability to join on with another team.

I don't know whether relations between Favre and Thompson are bad enough for that to happen, but the soap opera is far from over. Favre could end up the starter again for all I know.

I'm a Packer homer, by the way.

The Grant signing is a good thing, but I never had any doubt it would get done. I'm not surprised it took this long, because both sides had good arguments for their positions.

On a slightly un-related note... What do you guys think would be the best Seattle home game to go to? I'm torn... I want to see the Rams just to boo Josh Brown yet I want to see how they hold up to the patriots...

My dilemma is tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10am and generally sell out within an hour for the entire season... So, I sort of have to pick now before getting an idea of how teams are going to turn out this season.
 
I would say Rams. Divisional rivalry games tend to be better, and with some luck the Rams might be more of themselves as they were 2k6, rather than the bleh of 2k7.

Patriots is nice and all, nice billing, but less fun. Later in the season so quite likely - for a shoe-in like the 'Hawks - less riding on it, and the Patriots might make another steamroll season.

hehe. interesting. i didn't even think about that possibility...which is absurd of me, considering how maniacal the entire situation is at this point. i almost have a feeling though that between the public disdain for the Packer's attitude despite Brett's wishy washy b.s. combined with commissioner Goodall's forcing of the hand may have backed everyone into a corner where Favre may just end up the starter. as for Brett's attitude...while i agree it's fairly childish and unprofessional...i can't blame the guy for not wanting to give up the one passion in his life...and it really WOULD make sense for the Pack to start him. he's a goddamn hall of famer coming off an extraordinary season. i don't know. i keep going back and forth. i really just want to see this settled. and as another Pack-4-Life'r...i certainly wouldn't mind another season with him.

as for Grant...i didn't doubt too hard, but recently it was getting a little scary. he is quite possibly the greatest hope for a running game the Packers have had in my lifetime...and the kid is just fucking electric to watch. him and Jennings are my boyz. btw, you're a Packer homer? shit man, we tight like that. i grew up in appleton and milwaukee, yo.


as for Maph. i agree with the aforementioned statements....i think the Rams HAVE to, by default, have a better season than last. i think it will be interesting to see how they approach this season...and besides, you probably have a better chance of watching the 'Hawks win! hehe.

Right, theres no shame in losing the NFC championship game to the team that goes on to win the superbowl.

I always got the sense that they were fed up with Brett before last season because of his free-wheeling ways and were kind of glad to be rid of him and have a more "coachable" QB.

I don't see him backing anybody up.
 
Bah. Look, Favre has his qualities and if he just stuck around, it'd be fine for him to play next season. But you're no longer just talking about next season now, the Pack is a young team committed to the future. The effect of dragging back Favre into this will be disastrous, and could quite well ruin the team's momentum for years.

Seriously, stop thinking short-term and look at the long-term. Whichever way you look at it, Favre is bad news for the long-term, even if Rodgers turns out to suck the coming season.
 
nahhhh....i think that's a bit much. i think the man has helped give these youngin's a fire under their ass and has represented a great role of leadership to the team. with or without him, Rodgers, Brohm or whoever else steps up...these young fuckers are focused right now...and i don't doubt it. i think coach McCarthy is the team's greatest strength, to be honest and despite the circus Favre has created, i see no long-term damage to the team...again...with or without him.
 
Twenty-four hours ago I would've said Favre was going to be the starter in Green Bay again this year. Now Brett's burned his bridges and I'm hearing the trade to Tampa Bay is all but done.

Mike McCarthy's been very level-headed through this whole thing, and he said something along the lines of Favre not being in the proper emotional state to play for the Packers. He said this without any apparent animosity. Apparently Favre's got a grudge against Thompson and he isn't going to let it go. I don't think anyone outside the small circle of Favre, Favre's agent, Thompson, Murphy (the team president) and McCarthy know the whole story there.

Outside of public opinion (which, as far as I can tell, is divided) the team has all the power at this point. They don't have to release him, and they don't have to play him, and they don't have to trade him. They could leave him on the bench all year. The only thing Favre has is the ability to turn down trades, because that's in his contract.

I'd keep an eye peeled for confirmation of the Tampa trade, if it hasn't come through yet. That's the best possible outcome left for all parties.

As a Packer fan, I would consider that trade a positive considering how messed-up things have become.

That's fucking retarded. Rodgers has a shitton of extra pressure on him, and he can quite likely crack under it and the bullshit these so-called "fans" are pouring on him. Regardless, it won't be any help to a pretty talented young QB

As for helping, it's public knowledge Favre has been about as supportive of Rodgers as Bush is of Obama. When push comes to shove, Favre was never much of a class act.

anyway...i didn't say Favre was supportive of Rodgers (even though he has gone on record so far saying he understands that Rodgers is the "main guy" but would like to compete) but that he was an example for young guys on a team in the middle of nowhere...teaching them that the game is more important than the theatrics. you will NEVER see any T.O. type bullshit from a Packer, i guarantee. not in this era. that's what i meant.

You're asking the wrong question. Stop getting a hard-on about a 38-year old QB, legend or not, and ask yourself what's best for the team? Because every action Favre has taken since he "got the itch" again has been to the detriment of the Pack, and he's made his intention to play for the Vikings - the fucking Vikings - clear pretty early. If you're still standing behimd through that shit, then Woodson is right, you're no Pack fan, you're a Favre fan.

Might as well pack your bags for Minneapolis now. That's your QB's city.
 
if Rodgers starts and does well, my bet is he stays. the team and the staff are too good right now to pass up. if he buckles under this media pressure, well...i'd rather see somebody else step up anyway.

right now my faith really lies in McCarthy. i think he is a pretty brilliant coach.

and as far as FANS??? this is NOT the Brothers Karamzov book club. it's a midwestern football franchise. this is like...everything to those people. Green Bay goes back to the roots of the game, and the team is owned by the people. of COURSE they're going to be upset that their greatest hope for success is not starting...REGARDLESS of the politics or what's best for the long-term future.

Wait...so Favre nearly extorted 20 million from your franchise before changing his mind and thinking he'd be a bigger asshole if he instead forces them to put him in a rival team, and you don't think that detracts from him? Dude, you don't have an option about "not going to detract" from Brett, he's doing it pretty well himself. He's taking his own legacy and shitting all over it and you all love it for him.
