Night Watch

Montez

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
I liked the demo so much that I decided that playing it was worth subjecting my poor computer to the unholy abomination that is Starforce. It's pretty fun so far; it basically plays like Silent Storm with the "Night Watch" world superimposed on it, but for me that's perfect. After all, the SS engine was awesome, why mothball it when there's so much more that can be done with it?

Anyone else playing it?

Gamespot gave it a 5.6/5.5, so I'm a bit skeptic to pick it up. Their main complaints were that the game became very tedious very quickly.
Then again, I haven't even played Silent Storm yet, so I have no authority talking about it.
That Gamespot review can be found here.

Wasn't the movie crap though?

Silent Storm also got very very tedious after a while, I guess the demo could be fun though, if my computor wasn't so craptastic.

I liked the movie, and liked Silent Storm a lot, but since i found the file that caused a computer breakdown last year was a drive from Starforce i sort of run from any Starforce protected game as it had the plague.

Yeah, thanks to Montez i found ways to go around it, but still i won't buy a game with that devil's spawn in it, and i don't do warez, so it's no game for me.

Either they gave the game to a reviewer who dislikes that type of game, or they're just trying to cater to or warn the ADD console crowd. Tediousness is a matter of perspective after all, and it's an especially worthless judgment in context of games. All games of any type consist of the repetition of a limited variety of actions in a limited variety of scenarios; Basketball, Baseball, Chess, card games, any sort of video game, etc etc etc, are all extremely tedious if you find the game itself unappealing. Take Final Fantasy X, for example: I thought it was one of the most tedious games I've ever played - 30 hours of "run forward, press the X button a hundred times, watch cutscene, run forward, press the X button a hundred times, watch cutscene" over and over and over again. Gamespot gave it a 9.3/10 though. If I reviewed FFX I would have given it a 5 because I found the gameplay so boring and repetitive and little more than an excuse to make an actual game out of a series of cutscenes. Which of us is right? Both, because the appeal of any game is completely subjective.

I wouldn't say that Night Watch is an incredible, "must-have" game, but it is a solid TB combat game. If you like that type of game and are willing to deal with Starforce it's definitely worth picking up, and as far as those types of games go it's no more or no less tedious than any other. The storyline could have used some work, but other than that it's a pretty good game.

Montez:
Maybe "tedious" isn't the right word. I think they didn't like it because it was repetitive.

Usually you step into the gloom on the first turn of the battle, fight until all the enemies are dead, and then step out of the gloom to move on to the next battle.

Their words not mine. I have no opinion of it, having not played it (or having any other relation with the SS engine).

By the way, I hate FF to death and believe it to be the reason why "RPGs" are considered actual RPGs.

You shouldn't rely on gamespot's review.

I don't rely on many reviews nowadays from any site.

Apologies if I came across as lecturing you rather than berating the article, I didn't mean it that way.

They are right about the basic structure of combat, and the gloom aspect could have used some work to make it more varied or optional instead of something you have to do every time. It's a relatively minor thing though, and while it does get a bit repetitive towards the end of the game it never seemed like too big a deal to me. It's something that's only going to be a problem if you're bored with the gameplay, and if you're bored with the gameplay then the "enter the gloom" aspect is really the least of your worries.

I guess the best thing to do would be to try the demo; it has the first 3 levels of the game and gives you all you need to know to decide whether the game is worth your time or not.

Night Watch aside, I highly recommend you pick up Silent Storm if you like TB combat games; you can probably get the "Gold" version which has it and the expansion for about $10-$20 now. The voice acting is kind of goofy, but other than that it's an awesome game and matches up to X-Com and Jagged Alliance 2. It can be tough at points and lots of people hate the panzerkliens, but the ragdoll physics and the destructible enviroment make for so many memorable moments and give you so much freedom in the way that you can beat the levels that it's more than worth it.

Montez speaks the truth. I was looking into getting this game for a long time. I haven't played a good TB combat game in a long time (and I still can't get my copy of X-Com: Apcoalypse working). I remember PC Gamer saying when they awarded SS their TB Game of the Year Award, "If sex was turned based, it'd feel like Silent Storm."

Edit: Forgot to credit Montez for his quote.
