North Korea has a new toy

Physical evidence
The apparent nuclear test was conducted at 10:36 a.m. (1:36 a.m. GMT) in Hwaderi near Kilju city, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported, citing defense officials. (Watch a quick timeline of how the situation reached this point -- 2:09)

South Korea's state geology research center detected a 3.58-magnitude "artificial earthquake" in a remote area of North Korea's North Hamgyeong Province, according to the news agency. Judging from the seismic tremor, the center said the power of the explosion was equivalent to around a half kiloton of TNT explosives, Yonhap reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey Web site recorded a light 4.2-magnitude earthquake in North Korea at 10:35 a.m., about 385 kilometers (240 miles) northeast of the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

CNN's Matthew Chance said that Moscow said Russian equipment in the area had confirmed an underground test.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said that the force of the blast was five to 15 kilotons.

The nuclear test "will contribute to defending the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the area around it,"said North Korea's state news agency, Korean Central News Agency.

So a new challenger appears in the nuclear game. So who is going to be the next nuclear power? South Korea or Japan?

They prolly collected 10000 tons of TNT and detonated it under some village. :freak:

BTW, due to the cost of that test several tens of thousands North Koreans are probably going to starve this winter. Lovely.

EDIT: The Japs wouldn't get a nuke even if the US started handing them out to everybody else.

Let's nuke 'em! Nobody should be allowed to have nukuhlehah powah, weaponz of mass distraction, let's nuke 'em and let gawd sort 'em out. Praise gawd for vittory!

That said, North Korea has been marked as a secret nuke-holding country for a long time now, and anyone surprised by this is ass-retarded. They border on one nuclear super-power and one nuclear mid-power that still has enough nukes to wipe them out, not to mention the US nuclear subs hanging around their coast. I don't think the threat would warrant either SK or Japan to get nukuhlear.

500 tonnes of TNT isn't that much for a Nuke, if that is how much it was, it is possible to simulate 500 tonnes of TNT with conventional explosives. I don't see how Russia and South Korea can have so varying estimates.

Could it be that Russia is overstating the results so that North Korea appears more of a threat?

it's not easy to estimate stuff like that, due to not being able to take readings closer to the epicentre. in the end it's all extrapolation and estimation. a lot of things can change these (other information on soil makeup & such).

besides, there are political issues at stake. the less SK reports, the better for them.

Another coincidence is the coming election of a successor for Kofi Anan at the U.N. who will almost for sure be the candidate from South Korea.

US and other spy planes are currently overflying the area taking air samples to verify that a nuke was detonated and estimate the yield. And besides, I can't foresee any benefit to N Korea in faking a nuclear detonation, other than perhaps saving the fissle material otherwise used.

ANd while the test was indeed expected, at the very least this was the other shoe dropping, allowing the Chinese to save face in stopping fuel and food shipments to N Korea, as they have (probably) wanted to do for some time. Unfortunately this would cause a mass exodus of refugees into China, much to their dismay. If there's anything the world can do to egg China on to this course is to volunteer to pay for and help the CHinese accomodate the refugee crisis when it does come.

Becuase if China does not confront N Korea that would be the would be the real nightmare scenario. Imagine if you will that N Korea is allowed to both totter along for another decade before collapsing and spewing all the more refined nuclear materials into the black market upon its eventual, rather than quick collapse. Or, and here's the real kicker, if Iran notes that that world backed down in the face of nuclear armament and saw this as a sign of weakness and went ahead and pursued its current nuclear ambitions posthaste.

That's not a world I would want to bring children into.

Yawn.

With some luck, they just *might* nuke the Japanese anime studios.

Anyway, it's been a long time since NK's been building their bomb, this is hardly a 'surprise', a 'shock' or something that 'sends shivers' throughout the world'.

Like I have said at another forum, it is just now between NK and the rest of the world (ie America) to show who has the bigger balls to take action, if any.

Cold War II anyone?

Mbwahahaha!
The USA has neither the resources nor the will to get into yet another war at this point.

The UN security council might force some economic sanction, but there's no reason whatsoever to believe that there will be any form of military action.

Also, no-one is supporting North Korea, and they're a really, really tiny country so they're not a real threat in any case.

World is so full of nuclear missiles that nobody could ever have balls to launch one in fear that it releases a unpleasant domino effect.

But if they do however, let them to remember spread some FEV too..

NK has nothing anyone would want. hence there will be no war. NK will just be isolated a little more than before, which doesn't mean shit since they were isolated before.

in the best of possible scenarios & with some luck China might get tired of this and send in some black ops to get rid of the leaders and make a deal with the remaining military. very doubleful that that would actually happen though.

Actually, all China would have to do is wave food on the other side of the Yalu River to get the NK army to abandon Kim and pacify them at the same time. You know at least half of the NK <s>Fighting Farmers</s> Army has to be tired of tilling soil with old Russian Korean War-era rifles. :D

The American oppression continues!

You can sound sure about that, but I wouldn't put it past on for every one.

Just take a moment and think, and you might see an underlining theory that it wasn't the North Koreans that made the test, but that it might have been the Americans! Now the American's have an enemy that has real weapons of mass destruction, yeah, and not just one that has the ones that the Americans sold to them, but a one of it's own making, now with clear purpose, they can use the NK as a nuclear test site, with the consign of all the international communities. And it's no where near the US, so it is safe to send more than a few bombs there.
"Yeah, we missed a few, but at least we got the job done."(American General)
"But you killed our citizens."(China's Ambassador)
"But think of it this way, how many would they have killed if they would have send their bombs."(AG)
"But our intelligence informs us that they don't have any."(CA)
"Yeah, yeah, that's what they all say, but look what happened with the first one."(AG)
 "Thought it was ours, but still."(AG)

i hope they don´t nuke japan,
i don´t like japanese postapokalptic RPG´s.

edit: Those Asian guys are crazy, they would eat corpses to survive and leaves from tree´s. :look: they all have a copy of the famous "Art of War" -Book and some of them own a copy of "Hagakure". :look: They are master in painting maps/tactics and if you try to nuke them, they would easy dig the longest and deepest tunnels on earth out. Look at the Chinese Wall, the Vietnam Tunnels, :look: you can´t kill crazyness.

Think Brazil & India would want nuclear power soon.
Which is rather sad as the background radiation would rise another few Bp :(
