Old World Blues wins 'Best DLC' award at IGA 2011

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
It appears like Fallout: New Vegas has managed to snatch another award, with its Science!-themed DLC Old World Blues winning in the "Best DLC" category at the Inside Gaming Awards, in which it was pitted against candidates such as Street Fighter IV - Arcade Edition, Portal 2: Peer Review and Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam.

Congratulations to the team!

Awesome, except I didn't understood who the heck were those guys? Obsidian developers?

Cause in all honesty, they looked like those tough-ass Bethesda marketing department.

It makes some sense with winning, what with the likes of super street fighter 4 arcade edition merely consisting of an unlock key that unlocked two different skins of characters, and another pair that were already in the arcade versions of the game.

I got all the DLC's during the Thanksgiving day Steam sale and started a new game with them installed. Once I take care of Benny (I love blowing his sorry ass away) I want to start exploring the DLCs. I've read great things about Old World Blues. It sounds like walking into an old episode of the Twilight Zone.

So, are the VGA's still relevent, or are they just a big gaming industry joke now?
It seems like they're pandering to 12 year old COD famboys with that horrible tea bagging thing.

These aren't the VGAs, dude.

@Sub-Human ? What? Yes, these are Obsidian devs (except the guy on the left who was a voice-actor)

The bald guy was Jason Fader (Producer)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCdItJicoP8

The other guy was Mikey Dowling who was an associate producer on New Vegas and wrote the "Begin Again" song for the Dead Money DLC which his fiancee Stephanie Debrule sung.

What does "tough ass" mean here anyway?

You have got to be kidding me... "That" piece of trash won? Ugh... Let me guess, Honest Hearts was the runnerup.

(I know it's harsh, but OWB was my least favorite DLC, I thought it was worse than Mothership Zeta, some say that it's true to Fallout 2's lulzy spirit, it may be true, but at least Fallout 2 knew how to put space between it's lulzy moments, OWB was just a bucket of lulz compressed into a DLC of repetitive exploration and combating bullet sponge enemies with barely any story to tie it all together. At least MZ, as ridiculous as it was, had a story tying things together and went through it's setting with a straight face.)

Yeah, I'd rather not hear about Mothership Zeta ever again, but because you brought it up, I'd rather play 6 hours of lulz with bulletsponge enemies in an open environment rather than 2 hours of IQ-draining idiocy on a linear spaceship with bulletsponge enemies.

You make it sound like OWB wasn't IQ-draining idiocy.

Anyway, I found MZ's artistic design far more interesting than Big Empty's. MZ had varied parts, OWB mostly felt like a copy paste of Fallout 3's environment only with a dark blue tint over the entire place.

As for open environment vs linear: I dislike that Fallout 3 was exploration heavy over story, while MZ's story wasn't very good neither was OWB's, but at least MZ had a story and didn't sacrifice it for an excessive focus on the exploration part.

[edit]

I'm confused about this really.

Dinosaurs on the Bethesda forums were annoyed at Fallout 3 being too exploration heavy.

OWB comes out and they praise it.

Dinosaurs disliked MZ being too ridiculous.

OWB comes out and they praise it.

Dinosaurs disliked the use of bullet sponge enemies and made continuous remarks towards it in Fallout 3.

OWB comes out and they praise it.

Dinosaurs disliked repetitive environments.

OWB comes out and they praise it.

Is there something I missed?
Or are people just ignoring their previous statements simply cause Obsidian developed it?
Seems kinda hypocritical.
Sure enough the Dinosaurs are largely Bethesda forums related but I think I've seen some of you fine gentlemen/ladies criticizing the same things.

I'm just... Confused...

I never played MZ since I have no interest in aliens in the Fallout setting as that principle makes no sense. OWB on the other hand makes perfect sense if you're familiar with the B-reel movies that always influenced Fallout heavily. It hits that tone perfectly, stupid occasional jokes aside. And it's open-world exploration within a small area was pretty damn well-done too.

And don't call people dinosaurs or strawman them like that. I don't know who you're referring to, but I don't care, don't troll.

The bullet sponge enemies in OWB were bullshit though.

The main enemies I remember being bullet sponges were the metal scorpions; the lobomoties, nightstalkers, dogs, spore carriers and regular robots not as much, where there others?

With the scorpions, while they were bullet sponges, they were also slow and stupid and didn't attack too well, I pretty much ran from them as they weren't worth my time and it was never a problem. I see them as a sort of a B-Movie super robot that is powerful but totally impractical because it moves so poorly, slowly and stiffly, so they sort of fit into the setting that regard.

... Dinosaurs are a, sort of, group on the Bethesda Forums, some of the members being UnDeCafIndeed, me, Styles, Boradam, Andaius, Savage Beatings, Smert and Mako.
Those were the ones I was referring to.
Members of a group that often shared similar views that I did, including these ones I listed here. But for OWB it seems like everyone ignored their previous complaints.

As for members here, I've seen some statements here and there which shared these feelings the Dinosaur group had. But it was largely meant towards a certain group on the Bethesda forums.

But the underlying message of that post was to try and make others (who has had these feelings towards exploration over story, ridiculous setting/lulzyness, bullet sponge enemies and repetitive environments prior to OWB to) remember them if they found OWB to be great, that what they once complained about, now they praise.

Like I said, I'm just confused.
Cause not only the Dinosaurs (Again, it's a specific group) have complained about these things, many others have too.
I'm confused as to why it got such positive reception by the same members who saw so many negative aspects with these design decisiouns in previous DLC's and games.

But whatever.
I guess I'll never understand it.
But it ain't Fallout to me.

As for 'Best DLC', what were it up against? Cause Dead Money was way better of an RPG DLC for me.

Oh and as to the bullet sponge enmies, those included the Lobotomites, Cazadors, Nightstalkers and every kind of robot in there. (Lobotomies at least varied, some were easier, some harder, but largely they were too meat shield'y)
I went in there with a relatively good weapon, I didn't want to use something over the top like Holorifle cause it'd be way too easy, so I went in there with something a fair bit above avarage along wih 600 MFCs.

I burned through half the ammo I went in there with in the first hour of gameplay.
Constant bullet sponge enemies charging at me, depleting my ammo made me forced to use the new Melee weapons.

Isn't that kind of your fault for not using a better weapon though? If you use good weapons Lobotomites, Cazadors and Nightstalkers aren't bullet sponges at all. The DLC was very obviously balanced for higher level characters using very good high level equipment. One common complaint about the vanilla game was that the best weapons were overkill, OWB and Lonesome Road provided some enemies that where actually worth using them against.

I just used that energy axe against the scorpions. They had no chance.

So, what? I'm only allowed to use the best of the best stuff all of the sudden?
I mean come on, they could have balanced things out other ways, give nighstalkers more poison damage, give cazadors +20% speed, give lobotomites -50% head damage or something, just upping the health wasn't ideal, especially since FNV, DM and HH had pretty weak enemies, how was I suppose to know it would be different all of the sudden?
I adapted to the previous gameplay, that it was measly, that in order to have balance I had to reduce the amount of items I carried and drop the top tier stuff.

Meat shields should never be the solution.
Rebalance of weapons or giving enemies other types of bonuses would be better, hell even increasing the amount of enemies would be better.

Oh and LSR... Ugh... At least I used good items when I entered that place.

The amount of misery, brutality and twisted experimentation in Big MT, the underlying theme of science gone horribly wrong, sure as hell prevented me from laughing.

Little Yangtze. Yeah, that's hilarity right there. Totally Auschwitz-style comedy. I died laughing.

Yeah I couldn't hear you over the radio where they nag about penis tipped feet. (This is not meant as a flamebait.)
There might be more to Big Empty than meets the eye, but I didn't understand some of the references and the place was too crowded with talking roboscorpions and radio chatter from a bunch of twats to really notice.
Like that, Yangtze thing, I have no idea what that is, I could look it up now but that doesn't change that I reacted to it like "meh" when I first found it.

As for the dark aspects of it, I saw some, sure, but every time I started thinking about what they were doing a nighstalker came an interrupted me.

Anyway, my point with the Fallout 2 reference way back is that, in Fallout 2 I never saw it as having a lulzy front with a deep dark atmosphere underneath.
I saw it as having a deep dark atmosphere with some lulzy moments spread around.
OWB, to me, felt like a muffin with so much frosting on it that it's as big as a cake.
The frosting is the lulzy stuff, the muffin, is the dark parts.
It's so covered in ridiculous crap that whenever something dark came up I couldn't stay focused to it, because the time between that dark past history spot and the next would be filled with talking robot scorpions and radio chatter.

Maybe it's my fault for not being able to properly separate the two elements of OWB, but the lulzy stuff and repetitive tedious and frequent enemy encounters was far too overwhelming for me to even see the other element most of the time.

[edit again]

Ayeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not some cynical asshole that want dreary serious stuff all the time.
I love watching Family Guy and Jackass and Viva La Bam.
But I don't want that kind of "in your face" humour in Fallout.
I expect more subtle jokes from Fallout, or even that the lulzy stuff tries to take itself seriously. But OWB didn't do that.

Like, Jack Black, he was funny at first, but now it just feels like he's making a clown of himself more and more and watching him is just depressing.
OWB felt like a hyperactive clown, desperately trying to be loved with his comedy routine.
And yeah, it was funny at first, but it pushes it's comedy too far, too fast, too hard for it to remain funny.

I saw a dark joke in Skyrim that I found funny.
It was a torture room and had lots of torture equipment in there, and I glanced over at a table and saw... An onion. That felt more subtle, a feather would also have been great, what wouldn't have been good would have been walking in on some old woman in BDSM gear spouting out dirty talk to an Argonian prisoner named "I-Like-It-Rough" who she's spanking with a paddle while the prisoner says dirty things back.

Guess which type of comedy I found OWB to fit in, the former, or the latter.

(And just for some perspective on it, I laughed my ass off at that brain who wanted me to breath for her as she got her jollies off. But it doesn't mean I found the DLC to be good for Fallout. When someone I really really really fucking hate says something funny I can still recognize a good joke when I hear one and laugh at it, doesn't mean I like her any better than I did before though.)

[edit one more time]

Is this offtopic?
I mean, erm... Discussing whether OWB is worth winning "best DLC" is still in relation with the news thread, right?
If not, sorry for offtopic'ing it.

I have a hard time feeling this "serious" stuff you describe as actually "serious" when everywhere around you have lulzy stuff or ridicolous looking inventions, buildings, weapaons and such. I never felt "damn, shit this is pretty terrifying" when I visited this camp for example, how am I supposed to feel any "serious" feeling when I get sent around to places by floating brains with Penis obsessions, with Teddybear obsessions etc? Maybe I just don't "get" it, same as I never really got how Fallout was so ridden with these B-Movie encounters and such. I never felt "LOL! HILLARIOUS LMAO!" when I played Fallout 1. This doesn't mean it's bad, it just shows that the Fallout series is perceived very different by many people.

EDIT: Mr. Fish beats me to it.

X-play also gave OWB their "Best DLC" for 2011.

Just happened to catch that today.

They had Old World Blues up against CoD: Black Ops - Rezurrection, Deus Ex: HR - missing Link, and Gears of War 3 - Raam's Shadow, and Portal 2 - Co-Op challenges.

Hm... Only game I played here is DE:HR and I haven't had time to download and play that DLC.

Any of these other DLC's any good?
