Ancient One
The opening ceremony was pretty dull, but very Greek.
What the hell was that random dancing and kissing at the beginning? The whole thing was pretty ornate and very expensive I know, but did any of you actually find it interesting? The centre effect of the stone thing was not worth the trouble IMHO, but I did like seeing all the arty stuff and the costumes of the periods I have studied in Greek history.
The budget is many times that of Sydney and they are not selling their tickets, which are also a third of the price of ours. They have no Olympic spirit (we sold out most events) and there aren't that enough foreigners coming to watch the games. They were almost third world before the games, so I don't see how they are going to survive the economic repercussions of this event, unless the advertising saves them somehow. It seems like they are going to go bankrupt just to show everyone that they are not a european backwater.
Some interesting facts.
*Australia has entrants in every sport except handball.
*America didn't qualify in base ball, although we did (probably sabotage by the clubs I'd presume)
*Australia is one of the few nations that can take America on in soft ball, but in the qualifier we were massacred 10-0.
*Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan have teams.
Some Initial Results for Australia
-Michael Diamond lost the shooting.
-Our 4 by 100 womens freestyle relay team came from behind to snatch gold from the US.
-Patria Thomas finally got her butterfly gold.
-Thorpe and Hackett won the 400 metre freestyle after Thorpe had almost been disqualified for falling in the pool during the Olympic selection trials.
Just curious, but do you have Roy and H.G. in your respective countries? (its probably in the middle of the night).
EDIT: Even though there aren't that many Australians here all I can say is....
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
