Original style Advanced Power Armor, 3D (Fallout 2)

It Wandered In From the Wastes
album_pic.php

Been at this for a while. This is a ZBrush model based on the original Advanced Power Armor from Fallout 2. Still a Work In Progress, might take a while more to get it refined and done. I tried to retain the more powerful shape of the in-game model, having it more menacing looking than the more recent iterations.

Have to tweak some proportions even more, feel free to give comments.

Cool, the helmet looks pretty spot on. From the chest down, it doesn't really look like how I pictured the advanced PA, but I guess it's up to interpretation.

Are you gonna skin it as well?

Atomkilla: Thanks!

SkuLL: The original character model in-game was not that clear to begin with, hard to work out the details. What idea did you have in mind? I'd like to hear some alternative perspectives, it will help me to get some ideas as well.

At the moment I am just focusing on the modelling. Will do textures and details after that.

I was also looking at the Fallout 2 model, which is (IMO) way better than what they did in FO3 and FO:NV.

Crappy resolution indeed:

But you get to see how big the armor really is - the head is almost lost in the massive shoulders. And the stomach is pretty well covered by the plates, leaving only a small gap for mobility. Also, the legs are quite robust, especially the shins and feet.

While in the 3D Fallout games, I feel like they took the awesome head and added a generic body - it looks too slim compared to the menacing helmet.

Of course, it's all up to interpretation, but I always imagined the PA to be a bit over-the-top - a clunky set of machinery - like wearing a tank. Not just metal armor with a cool helmet.

Ah yes, true. I notice that the main 'hero' models and the background cinematic and in-game character models are 2 different models. No way they match, and I think the up close version was modelled only shoulder up. It's just trying to find the balance and compromise between both. I'm taking the tank-like mentality into consideration.

Me too.
If you ask me, it's better to be looking like this or this, than this.

As said, it really has to be much beefier. APA makes you a hulking tank :D
The helmet is great, though.

Hi TTTimo. I must say you're goin' in the right direction. The helmet is really cool, proportional like in game IMO. I have only one sugestion to make this armor more "Warhammer" like, more bully, heavy.

Some time ago I tried to reconstruct this PA. Maybe It will give you some clues here and there.

Not bad, but it's still too WIP early to tell anything. Anyway, are you going to burn normal/AO maps from sculpt to LP mesh, sculpt, rig and render in ZBrush, or do a little retopo later on?

Wow, that looks great. Maybe the abdominal area could be even wider, though, and the feet look a little small, but that might just be me.

Thanks for the feedback. I've made some more adjustments to make the armor more "tank" :)

DarthBartus: Right now I'm just working on roughing in the model and main overall shape, and then I'll refine it and add finer details. Still quite new to ZBrush, but will retopo once the model is done, and then render it in Maya/Mental Ray. Might just do a simple Transpose pose.

It's awesome now. I'd make feet little bigger, and maybe more "round".
But generally, it's really great. :ok:
