Planescape & Windows 7

Ninjerk

First time out of the vault
I'm only about 2 hours into Planescape, but I'd say the quality of the experience makes the $30 pricetag worth it, considering what you'll find at any given B&M store for $50-60.

Noted.

Since it seems like a game I'd enjoy, what I'll probably end up doing is lurking until I see a particularly good price somewhere. Then I'll jump on it.

It's like an H&M store, only with Bundeswehr uniforms.

Brick and Mortar. I.e, real-life non online shopper experience, just like Grandma used to.

You mean, shopping. (I never buy online. Well, rarely.) Ok, whatever.

I'm guessing that you prefer games without levels (like Super Metroid and Cave Story) to games with levels (like Earthworm Jim)?

Generally, yes. I've never particularly liked the feeling of having a "door" shut behind me permanently during a game, so to speak, and that mildly irks me at times when I realize I forgot to pick up that [insert power-up here] in that hard-to-reach place because I didn't realize at the time that I would not be able to backtrack in the level, and/or I had a revelation about how to procure said out-of-the-way cleverly-placed-just-out-of-reach power-up ex post facto. Sometimes such an event is plot-essential, of course, but often it's simply a fixture of the "level" system upon which games like Super Mario Bros., Earthworm Jim, etc. operate. Doesn't make them bad games by any means, of course, just different.

(edit: I'm the sort of player who will sacrifice a low level completion time in DOOM in a heartbeat for the sake of searching for secret goodies. But then, when playing on Ultra-Violence difficulty, I needed all the help I could get.)

A game like PS:T is probably my "best game of all time". But something like Super Mario Bros. 3 would be like my favourite game of all time. SMB3 I can play over and over again, but something like PS: T, I have to ingest like a favourite novel of mine and "reread" again, maybe a few years later. Hopefully any shite future Microsoft OS's don't screw me out of this.

it should work in Win 7 at least (without even running in compatibility mode). I've just installed BG1+2 and besides some minor graphical glitches there haven't been any problems. I can't see why PS:T wouldn't work too.

from what I've heard though, when Win 8 hits (which will hopefully be a while from now), all support for older OS's will be droped. probably meaning there won't even be any compatibility modes.

for now, win 8 is science fiction.
and technically, OSs up to win2k have stopped being supported for ages, but compatibility mode is alive and kicking (which is only reasonable since there are so many commercial DOS applications out there)

This might actually get me to convert to 7. I'm still working with vista, mostly because i'm comfortable with it now. And, seemingly unlike the rest of the world, I haven't really had any problems with it.

Don't double post.

Also, you could simply dual boot with Windows XP and Windows 7.

The graphical glitches for Infinity Engine on the newer Windows OS is completely fixable. The glitches are a bit more severe in Planescape, but get fixed the same way as for BG. IIRC, there two solutions: one is to disable "Software BLT" in the options of the game, but it makes the game lag a bit; the other one is to disable D3D acceleration in the video card codek options which imo works a lot better(codeks for my laptop couldn't do it, so I had to install XP, I'm sure some people are more lucky though).

I don't recall if the issue is actually caused by the new Windows, or by the new generation of nVidia cards (seems like the latter). Personally, I use XP because all games run about 2x faster on it; the only drawback is the lack of DX10 support.

I've had very few problems with compatibility on 7. Had to install Sfall for FO2 to get it to run with normal colors, but overall all my games have been fine.

yeah, I think the main problem is with the new nVidia cards.

what glitches have you experienced in BG? I haven't played for long at all so I probably haven't discovered them all yet, but so far I've only had problems with the fog of war looking messed up and there being a black background on all item graphics in my inventory. the latter was fixed when I disabled Software BLT.

in BGII I'm only getting graphical problems in the main menu.

New ATI cards seem to crash in Torment, as well, though for me it was pretty much only in the Fortress of Regrets. Every trap caused a crash until I lowered hardware acceleration one or two notches

Yeah, same problem as PS:T - bad FoW, black lines around objects. The difference with torment is that you don't get crashes on casting spells.

well I noticed another problem I have with BG - when casting certain spells and when there are lots of enemies on screen at the same time the game slows down a lot. and I mean a lot.

can this be fixed by disabling D3D acceleration? in that case, how do I do this?
