Post-Apocalyptic Superbowl commercial

K.C. Cool

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Has anyone seen the upcoming Chevy Superbowl commercial? While obviously poking fun at all things post-apocalyptica (giant robots, UFO's, and the like) while throwing in a lame punchline against Ford, I figured I would share before the world sees it on Sunday.

Although, seeing Big Boy in the commercial seems reminiscent of Vault Boy (or, well, maybe more specifically Pip Boy http://www.nma-fallout.com/content.php?page=on-vault-boy-and-pip-boy). Maybe I'm just being dumb, but other than a vague reference to Fallout, what does Big Boy have to do with an apocalypse?

Well, it most certainly has everything an american commercial must have. Shit food advertising, token black guy in the group, old guy delivering the retarded "wise" punchline,.... Did i miss anything?

The weak biblical reference for the bible belt?

Being a Fallout fan and an old sci-fi movie fan, the commercial is a lot of fun until the lame Ford jab. They just alienated half the country with that gag.

Well, probably also a wink at Zombieland (where Woody Harrelson hunts for Twinkies in a zombie infested post-apoc wasteland). Chevy drivers even have twinkies at hand!

As a fan of the NFL, I am mystified by the whole "Super Bowl ad" hype. Advertisers thank you, though.

Apropos, Chevy barely survived the economic crisis. The apocalypse? Haw.

All the oilfield companies around me use Fords as their fleet vehicles. They prefer them because of lower maintainence. Chevys can be OK for general use. But, if you're going to be driving a truck a lot of miles in a relatively short time, Fords will hold up better. Maintainence records don't lie.

especially when you consider the longest running most popular truck line is the ford 150.

there is a reason ford still makes them and doesnt mess with them very much.

most companies "reinvent" a line after 5-10 years. i think thats why the ford 150 line is so popular. they dont change the quality, just the outside a bit every once in a while.

the bastards run. and run well. and one of the lowest maintenance costs.

as far as i know, the only truck line in danger of competeting with the long-term of the ford 150 line is the dodge ram series.

More people watch the Super Bowl than anything else on television in the U.S. and as a result the fees companies pay for a 15 or 30 second ad are mind boggling. It's become an annual tradition and a competition to roll out the funniest, most original ads. Overhyped? Yes. I no longer pay any attention to it, but over the years there have been some pretty good ones, like the old Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny ad from '93.

3.5 million. And I know all that.

But how ignorant do you have to be as a consumer to start hyping ads? That's doing PR's work for them. No wonder they love this period of time so much.

Rather than focus on people being ignorant, because there is ignorant people in this world whether you like it or not, I would rather credit the PR's for knowing exactly how ignorant some people is and doing a dang good job out of exploiting it.

True, but they're not just regular ads (except that most of them are nowadays). People expect a show, or something funny, or something original, at least, and if your ad sucks, you get burned the next day. A few companies have launched themselves in a major way by having a good Super Bowl ad. It's the one place you can guarantee people will watch and talk about it.

I stopped paying attention several years ago because I don't think the companies are putting forth the same effort they used to. They're coasting off the hype.

This commercial is completely ridiculous. They imply that silverado's will rule the roads of the post apocalyptic landscape. Everyone knows that when the end times come the only vehicle that will still work is the Toyota Hilux.

over here it is strictly illegal to mention/jab another brand in an advertisement

ive seen examples of foreign ads, for example a coca cola ad specifically making fun of pepsi,
but lately ive seen phone company ads somehow manage to get away with naming and bad-mouthing other brands.
