Here's a review, benchmarking and all.

For $199 (4 GB)/$229 (8 GB) this seems like a really cheap, but solid graphics card - cannot compare to 1080 GTX in terms of raw power, but is definitely a LOT cheaper.

So what do you guys think?

I'm planning on getting a new rig in autumn, and this one really caught my eye. I was targeting nVidia 770 GTX up to this point, but this might take the cake. I just need to figure the rest of the components.

Ideas, suggestions?

If you're building a budget rig, there is very little reason not to go with a 480. IIRC, the 390 is just a little more powerful, but the 480 has one of the best price-to-power ratios of any GPU on the market.

What do you think about nVidia GTX 1060?

It's kind of a budget rig in a sense that I won't go for some high-end stuff, but I have around 700 euro budget.

Honestly, it's a little iffy. The GTX 1060 is pretty comparable to the RX480, and they usually run neck-and-neck in terms of game performance and price (the 8gb GTX 1060 is almost the same price as an 8gb RX480.) Honestly, it mostly comes down to brand loyalty...

...unless you're concerned about VR. The GTX 1060 takes the cake in VR. SteamVR grades the GTX 980 at an 8/10 for VR performance. The RX480 gets a 6.8. The GTX 1060? It gets 8.1. If you want VR, get the GTX 1060. If you give zero shits about VR, though, it's a tight.

There's also the issue of the RX480 having crappier thermals than the GTX 1060 on average, but that's usually to do with the brand you get it from. Remember, GPU makers don't manufacture the cards, they design them. It's up to the manufacturer to put in things like factory overclocking and enhanced thermals.

I don't really care about VR, to be honest.

I do care about overall performance and price tho, and that's the breaking point. Red Devil is cheaper than GTX, though both will end up eating most of my budget.

Do you perhaps know any other good alternative?

you could wait for rx 470 or 460 which cost starting at $149 for the RX 470 4GB, and $99 for the 2GB variant of the RX 460.

like i said, the advantage of getting amd now is you get more future proofed option since amd have more robust support of dx12 and vulkan (which is utilizing ASync computing) than nvidia.
