I've downloaded the demo and I must say that it's pretty good. SimpleMinded expressed concern about running it proper but it runs great on my PC (AMD 2800, GeForce 6600) at max settings (minus AA).

Although not revolutionary the innovations such as portals and gravity shifts are interesting and add greatly to the FPS experience and there are some cool moments story-wise.

All in all, I'm thinking of getting it when it's available.

Prey demo is out.

link.

A solid single-player experince + descent-type multiplayer...

Must get....

Judas priest!

I just played it and I have to say the demo kicked ass. I liked all the banter the main character spouted out. I hate it when the main character doesn’t have any vocal cords.

*picks up big ass gin*
"This should fuck some shit up."

And yeah, the playing of Don't Fear the Reaper while you were getting abducted was awesome too.

I turned all the graphics up to max on my machine and it ran smooth as silk. I know unreal tournament had the gravity shifts and portals back in 1999, but I still think they kicked ass in this game.

Now I'm off to get a bunch of Judas Priest.

Ah, now I'd love to play this demo.
I really, really would. But it won't let me. The site (www.arushgames.com) seems to be convinced it has an invalid hostname. And hence the install routine can't complete, and I can't play the game.

Did (or does) anyone else have this?

For anyone who might care... the XBox 360 version was released today... at a whopping 1.12 GB. Anyone know why it's bigger than PC by so much, or played both and seen any differences?

This game is awesome, so far. Especially since it has Judas Priest.

Really, though, this game has some killer interactivity, and even though its spirit/human idea was stolen from those vampire adventure games, it still rocks.

Also, the gravity shifts were really, really fun. Unreal Tournament never utilised them like this.

I'd guess it would usually decompress a lot of data on the PC which it can't on a platform without a real harddisk or memory.

Also, consoles just plain suck.

Ok, c'mon, it's the XBox line, they've always made everything larger than nessessary.

I just tried the multiplayer and I got to say, it's been a long time I have ever to have so much fun in multiplayer after Quake 3. And Unreal tournament. The gravity and portal really add more gameplay mechanism (you can't rocket jump on gravity walkway, though  ).

Must get the game... PC version of course

Prey!

Graphs
as was to be expected, this was pretty much the new & improved brother of Doom3 & Quake4. the game ran better & looked better than his older brothers, which is of course a good thing. i had to put on Vsync though, to prevent getting sick to my stomach. i dont know if that was due to my pc setup, or to the game itself. i usually never play with Vsync on.

as i said before, the game itself ran quite well on my pc (which has a rather limited CPU, a P4b 2.53Ghz without HT). i was quite impressed how high i could pull the filters before getting graphic slowdowns.

the graphical environment is really nice & the models are well designed, although they do not have enough diversity imo. i do wish the girlfriend was modelled better, she did nothing for me. (i dont want some huge breasted lara croft who uses her tits as airbags each time she jumps to grab a ledge, but i dunno, the girls face didnt do it for me.)

General gameplay
the game has about everything that a normal shooter has & brings some new toys to the table. it features dynamic gravity switches, which are quite novel & fun at the beginning, but grow tiresome at the end (especially if you have to start wandering around for 10 minutes trying to figure out just where you need to go, when your way is blocked by half a million steel pipes). there is also extensive use of portals, which we have seen before, but it's pretty nicely implemented. the combinations of portal + gravity switches can sometimes mess with your head though. if you're a fan of rollercoasters, i think you'll enjoy it. if you're not, than i advice you not to play it for an extended period of time, or it'll melt your brain.

the guns are nice. they're pretty basic, BUT they look as if they're novel. i know it sounds weird, so let me give you a few examples. first we have the machinegun/sniperrifle combo. it's basically little more than the quake4 SMG/AR, but due to it's alien look & design, it makes you think it's something new. same goes with the acid sprayer, which is simply a shotgun in disguise. btw, the acid sprayer model leaks... i REALLY wouldn't want a leaking acid gun in my hands tbfh. the 'rocket launcher' launches pods/eggs that contain explosive animals & so on. so visually, they're things you havent seen before, but the concept remains the same.

there are some special weapons, but nothing extraordinary: the rechargeable gun, which depending on it's load can be a kind of plasma cannon, a frost gun, a lightning gun or a fusion beam. the grenades are a cross between a normal grenade & a snarl or snark or whatever the name of those beasts were in HL1.

it's strange however that they chose to make 2 difficulty settings, with the higher disabled until you finished the game on normal. as a veteran FPS gamer if found the game way too easy on normal. when you die, you get a kind of easy 'minigame' (if you can even call it that) that allows you to come back to life, instead of quickloading. thats rather nice.

there are also a bunch of other minigames, but none of them are worth playing. they're either too easy or too boring.

i think i finished the game somewhere in about 7 hours, but cant be sure, since i didnt keep track.

Story
first off, it's not like a normal american game or movie. things, will get rather ugly. so expect the unexpected.

secondly, i'm amazed how they succeeded in selling the story as immersive & believable. it's an indian with superpowers that tries to rescue his girlfriend from evil aliens. sounds pretty damn bad doesnt it? still, it works & you dont spend too much time thinking about it.

of course, this remains an FPS without any RPG elements, so you cant change anything to the story at all, not even an alternate ending or something like that.

Atmosphere/ambience
the game's ambience is quite well. both due to graphical representation as due to the story & voiceacting. it's common for the hero to comment on things, like duke did with the difference that the hero remains serious, while duke was plain silly at times. i think the alien weapons add a lot to the atmosphere. it's obvious they were modelled with great love & care.

overall, i think this will be one of the better FPS games this year, but nothing really revolutionary. if you liked Doom3 or Quake4, this game is definately for you. most FEAR fans will like it as well, but dont expect any fine aim or realistic damage in this game.

One of my friends got sick and vomited watching my play a certain section. They like flipping around ups and downs, and some areas have paths that you run on and gravity flips constantly. If you have a weak stomach, don't go. Those of you who've played space shooters, Descent, or used the Alien wallwalk in AvP 1 or 2 won't have any problem.

You left out the obligatory heavy hand tool for a weapon.

They throw a few good hints out here and there, if you're perceptive it won't suprise you in many places.

Except in a number of ultra-cheese sequences where they force the awful concept back into your mind with some overplayed dialog and almost-not-bad voice acting. The voice actor was decent in some parts, but often terribly un-enthusiastic.

but dont expect any fine aim or realistic damage in this game.
That was really irritating, much like HL2 where you only get about two weapons accurate enough to hit a still man at 30 yards with the first bullet.

Overall, I didn't like the game. It suffers from the typical FPS deal: take standard gameplay, add a feature or two, call it revolutionary, profit. The map design started cool, but got irritating quickly. The weapon feel was horrible. The story got somewhat interesting near the end, but the way they told it felt rather heavy handed. They also seemed overly eager to force their main-characters whiney-assed issue with his heritage in your face for a good half of it. The other characters have little to no development other than "hey, hi! I'm story-hook bob!".

well, watching is a lot harder than playing, because you have no control at all.

& the alien wallwalking really wasn't a problem because it was logical. the flips & turns in Prey aren't.

well yeah i left some out, but the handtool because it's just HL expansions revisited. HL had the crowbar, but i think OpFor & BlueShift had the wrench.

[semi-spoiler]true, but you dont expect you have to do it. not after the fight anyway. :P[/semi-spoiler]

some don't fit quite right, thats true. but it doesnt bother all that much.

as for the un-enthusiastic part, i think that has become part of the reservation indian culture many years ago ;)

the AR/sniper hits well in both fire modes, the acid shotgun can roughly be aimed in the right direction (at close range), the later fusion lance or whatever & such can be aimed accurately (although it doesnt really matter), but thats about it, i think.

the RPG & lightning gun dont really matter, they hurt bad anywhere they hit. the others were just too unaccurate.

i missed some FEAR-ish aimed shots. i'm really a headshot kind of man. you can of course imagine the surprise when i beheaded the worker unit for the first time. :P

too bad that same mindset has now taken the other genres as well. it used to be common for FPS', but now it's just everywhere.

what do you mean? i though they were ok overall (they were pretty cliché, but they were modeled so you wont notice too easily), although i hated not being able to make worthwhile headshots with most of the weapons.

Just completed it. I had a hell of a time, for the most part, but will probably never play through it again.

Graphics:

Damn nice, with all the effects turned on. The organic sections of the ship are done excellently, especially the tunnels of flesh, and intestine like pipes. I do however find the conventional sections a little boring. Still though, i was blown away when i first saw space.

Atmosphere:

Amazing at the start of the game, but lets up due to the end, in my opinion. I really enjoyed the feel of the bar, and the chaotic battle with the two bikers. The innitial abduction creates a true sense of fear and disgust for the enemy. The crazed men in boxer shorts really got to me. The plane crash section is excellent also, as it desperately attempts to stay flying while the pilot cries "mayday". The ghostly children were a brilliant enemy, and genuinely creeped me out, as did the school bus.

General gameplay:

The new "gimmicks" really intergrate nicely with gameplay. After first discovering gravity swtiches, and gravity walks, they just felt like a normal thing to me. The game dosn't push it's new features too much, but at the same time they add amazingly to the overall gameplay. Theres something cool about getting shot at from a guy on the ceiling. The weapons are all excellent, maintaining a very organic flavour. My personal favourite has to be the chaingun, with the strange creature clamping onto it, capable of firing a grenade from it's tail. The enemies were all excellent, if not a little easy. My favourite has to be the modified human, forced to work. They wont initally attack, but if you get close, they will charge at you. You can even blow off their heads and they will still come. I felt genuinely sorry for killing the things, but it was obviously neccisarry. I think this was what valve was going for with the stalkers. The space ship sections are also really fun. The tractor beam is a really nice addition, allowing you to pick up enemies, and drop them from high altitudes. Alternatively, you can use it to lock them in front of you, while you blast the shit out of them with your rockets. I thought the later space ship sections dragged on a little, but it was nice to see more of the outer ship. I really enjoyed finding that asteroid that they were harvesting.

My closing comment:

If your religion does not allow you to play games involving organic alien space ships with sphincter doors?
