btw, i thought the idea of consoles was to sell cheap, but charge too much for crapgames afterwards to make up the deficit. wasnt the X-brick & such sold with a deficit? does this mean Piece (o') Shit 3 is in fact even more expensive to produce than 499 to 599 Euros?

That's what they said, but somehow I've always seriously doubted that statement. I can not imagine them not making a profit even if they were to sell the Xbox for a lousy 100 euros.

As for the PS3: I'm sure as hell not buying one. I bought a PS2 shortly after they hit the market (the large model) and after about two months, the controllers already stopped working. I've never replaced them. I just use my PS2 as a rather expensive dvd-player, although that crappy piece o' shit can't even play some of the newer dvd's.

I waited three years to pick up a Playstation 2 (obviously I never felt a burning desire to own one in the first place), and have been quite pleased with it. I've never had a problem, the price was reasonable enough to buy it new, and there were enough games that satisfied me to justify owning it.

The price will drop, just as they will iron out the problems with hardware revisions, and better games will be released. I suppose it will still be expensive, but out of the six hundred dollar range. I will most likely buy one in time, mostly depending on the game selection.

Of course, that will have nothing to do with the inevitable rush to be the first to own the PS3.

Same here. I was really interested in GTA:San Andreas, and once it came out and I saw that the PC version wouldn't be out for quite a while I looked at the PS2 catalog. I saw enough games that interested me (usually heavily discounted by that point too) and that I could buy a used console for about $80, so I decided that it was worth it all around. At it's original sale price of $300-$400 though? Didn't even cross my mind to buy one. I might end up with a PS3 or a 360 one day, but it won't be while either are $500 and have only half a dozen games at all, let alone ones I might enjoy.

When the PS2 was released I went with some friends and camped out for one. We drove around for three hours looking for a spot to get one and finally found a CompUSA that wasn't jam packed with people. We hung out there all night and in the morning the list of people was up to 130 and there probably 100 actually in the line. The CompUSA had 27 if I recall correctly. People were going nuts and I think a few fights almost broke out. Granted at that time the price was $299. At $699, I think you will see a more muted response but I suspect demand will still be high for them. You guys might not be interested (myself included) but there are will enough buyers. I assure you, I will not be camping out when this one is released though.

I still don't understand why anyone buys new consoles on release. They are all worthless beta disc holders that overheat, don't work, or crap out after a week.

I might buy one because of blu-ray, depending on how much support it will have. If you look at the hd-dvd player prices, the lowest you can find is $500, while blu-ray disc players (i found only one online) cost at least $1000. $700 is a lot to pay for a console but if you have an hdtv and want a dvd player to go with that, buying ps3 beats buying a blu-ray or a hd-dvd. It depends on what you are looking for exactly, if I wanted it only for gaming I wouldn't buy it.

XBox generated a tremendous loss of $4 billion for Microsoft - and that's counting both hardware *and* software sales. If you consider only hardware sales, *all* consoles, no matter how succesful, generate losses; it's games that make money.

Anyway, didn't the Sega Saturn release for $600? And what about the Neo-Geo? These prices are not unheard of, just uncommon.

499 Euros about £347, £70 dearer than the 360 premium now. Even if they release it as the same price as the xbox, the 360 will no doubt drop in price the same day the PS3 is launched. They must be really betting on the blueray to sell it.
