Question about DOS games.

Still Mildly Glowing
Currently my computer is running XP on NTFS. I have some old DOS games that are not supported by DOSBOX. My old computer ran 98 on FAT16,I only have the hard drive left from it. To run the games I would reboot my computer using the WIN98 boot disc, load up the generic cd-drivers and run the games in DOS. I know this can not be done with XP due to the NTFS file system. I still have the old hard drive from my old computer but it has been formated to NTFS. Here is my plan: I am going to fomat the hard drive back to FAT16, can I do this using XP or should I just use the WIN98 bootdisc. I plan on physically switching over to the old hard drive and rebooting when I want to play the DOS games. Will I have to actually install WIN98 on the second hard drive for it to work or can I just use the boot disc to boot up DOS? Hopefully someone here can answer this question

If by "format" you mean "migrate", then yes, it will work, and no, you won't have (and probably shouldn't) install Windows.

Use a tool like PartitionMagic or similar to migrate your drive back to FAT filesystem. Don't format it, it will lose you data!

I have an old DOS 6.22 boot diskette, maybe I could provide you with a disk dump.

There is no data on it anyways, I originally was going to use it for page filling and try to speed up my system, but it didn't make any noticeable difference, so it's just sitting in my new computer doing nothing.

Out of curiosity, what games? There might be easier ways to get them running.

Carmageddon 1 and Splat-pack. I've tried dosbox, it won't work.Plus I checked the Interplay website and it say's not supported for XP. I have checked other forums/web sites and other people have tried duel installs of XP/98, but it is still reported as unstable. Plus, to do this takes a lot of work and computer know-how, both of which I don't have.

I think I have the same DOS disc as you, Silencer, somewhere. I will have to find it.

It's a stand-alone OS, as the website I linked to explains. Sheesh.

Sorry, dumb question. After checking the site shortly after my last post, I got the answer to that. It looks promising. Thank-you for the tip.

I'm having a problem running a DOS game too. Although it also supports Win 95, I'm trying to run it through DOS box. So far, all I've done is get the intro movie to load. After it plays that, it crashes. The game in question is X-Com: Apocalypse and it also needs the CD to run (I think). I really don't want to have to install an entire OS just to play one game. Got any tips?

Yup, it does. Just whack off to some graphics you find on the web, the game is crappy but for the music.

Or play UFO Enemy Unknown

PS. The one disk freedos distro is called Odin. I'll try to get it to run on my old 386 ;)
