Racism?

"Senator Barack Obama is very well-groomed and articulate"

"What the hell? You can't call him articulate, that's racism"

Uhm. For serious, I had only just recovered from the fact that calling Tony Romo athletic equals being a racist...not racist towards white people because saying blacks are more athletic is denigrating towards white football players but because, get this, saying black players are more naturally athletic hints that white people are smarter...

Nevermind the Michael Richards thing...

Honest opinion? You people are friggin' retarded. The whole censorship and subversive nature attributed to any and all form of racism means that open, rational debate has become impossible. Because it's such an ill-discussed subject, it can not be approached properly in any way, be it crooked or straight.

With this attitude, the USA is going to carry the burden of racism for a long, long time.

Barack Obama? No chance.

I HATE FLASH ADS THAT HOVER OVER TEXT!

Also, this is just retarded beyond thought. Do these people not realise that bringing this up only furthers the thought that blacks and whites are to be thought of seperately? Because obviously they are still thinking of them seperately.

Also, here's a fun fact:
Genetically speaking, there are statistical differences (on all levels) between 'blacks' and 'whites'. Here's another fun fact: this doesn't, in any relevant way, reflect on *any* individual. As long as people keep upholding the idea that whites, blacks, asians etc. are seperate groups, racism will not go away. Treat 'blackness' similarly to 'blondeness', *then* it will go away.

Political correctness, the disease of any society...

It's pretty silly all of it,I mean some meant-to-do-good white is more likely to put something before the trial than a non-white...just because, maybe, somehow someone that is not white might get offended.(without even asking one non-white if they are offended)

The only thing it leads to is censored debate/opinion,why not put all of it forward and discuss it openly instead?
Not only is there a greater chance to come to a conclusion, but it will also hinder anyone thinking theycan't speak freely about something they think is wrong...

Only lies need to be covered up,pure facts and truth stands on their own legs...

Back on topic, you think Hilarity Clinton stands a better chance?

No way.

AHNOLD 2008. VOTE, DON'T BE ZE GIRLY MAN.

Heh. The topic actually *wasn't* presidential elections, but that said, neither Obama nor Clinton stands a chance, the USA is way too reactionary for that.

And the Republicans can't decide because all competent candidates are being blocked by the evangelicals.

This should be a funny, if messy, election.

I like Obama because he isn't Bush and because he has a clean sleight. Of course, that means dreadfully little...

but for the OP: yes, this racism crap is bullshit, but whatcha gonna do?

Genetically speaking, there are statistical differences (on all levels) between 'blacks' and 'whites'.

Wait, isn't that the "real" definition of racism?

Deja vu!

Agreed but if it's really the case, it's kind of impractical to believe that stereotypes and generalizations will go away since they could be based on statistical likeliness that whatevergroup is more often going to be "this way".

Of course by "genetically speaking", you may be referring to inconsequential phenotypical differences which to deny would confuse even the most hardcore anti-racist, but the "on all levels" makes me assume you meant otherwise.

T'is an interesting discussion that deserves to be openly discussed without cries of "racist!" throughout the whole thing.

Can I get a heil Hitler? :look:

I saw a black man in Brugge once - I guess he took a wrong turn or sth.

That said, I have had a similar experience once. I help run child-projects* in the summer, and I once had a real, hardcore second-generation Moroccan rapper-gangsta dude in the team I was managing. How the hell he ended up there I never knew, but he was obviously fairly out of place. He was a good worker, though, and he genuinly liked kids - so I decided to give him a chance either way and try to coach him to, y'know, not actually scare the kids (and especially their parents) away.
The most obvious thing for me was that the whole gold chain, gangsta-jacket, wearing-silly-shower-hats persona didn't really fit a project centering on kids in the 3 to 7 year range.
So I suggested he might want to leave that stuff at home, and wear, y'know, less threatening clothes. (Which I asked in a perfectly civilized manner)

Oh boy.

I ended up in a shitstorm that lasted for days. Not only did he immediately start spewing profanity I never even heard before (withing earshot of the kids, I might add), and return the next day with some of friends (apparently to intimidate me**), but he even went way over my head to complain to the alderman*** in charge of youth affairs for Brugge and apparently made quite a scene, too. In the end, he filed a semi-formal complaint on the grounds that I use 'double standards' when it comes to stuff like this - after all, I didn't tell the female animators to, like, take their jewelry off. I even had a guy from the city council come down to talk to me, to make sure I wasn't discriminating people on skin colour - even though there were two other minority persons (?) working with me.

I dunno, it seems like nowadays you have to be really damn carefull of what you do if you don't want to be branded a racist. I mean, if he were a 'white man' I'd have asked exactly the same thing - yet I doubt the city council would've taken active interest if a 'white man' would've gone and made those complaints. Double standards, ahoy.

In the end, I recieved a formal letter from the city council that discrimination on grounds of race, gender or age is forbidden under any circumstances, and that I should keep an open mind to whatever means minorities use to express their native culture - and not to judge them on grounds of any connotations attached to specific outfits these racial sub-cultures might wear.

Ironically, I personally found that letter to be quite racist.

I mean, fuckin' a, if he had come wearing a sarong and a Mubutu-hat I woudn't have cared less - but he was dressed like friggin' Ice T...

*Not projects for, like, making children, rather entertaining them.
** Which turned out to be quite funny - since his friends were obviously oblivious as to what the fuck they were doing there acting tough surrounded by 4-year-olds
*** 'Alderman' is a guy in the city council, right? I wasn't too sure of this.

If he* wins, people will say it's because he's black* and it was the "politcally correct" thing to do.

If he* loses, people will say it's because he's black* and it was the "politcally correct" thing to do.

Fuck it. It's shameful that heritage, wealth, proof of completing an education (whatever method used to do that), and sex (in all diversified forms of the word) take precedence in my country's public opinion over policy and doctrine. At least, I have yet to hear anyone argue his* merits for ruling instead of how great it will be for the nation since he's* half niggerish*.

Although, I do get some, scattered reports of what he* will do better. It's mostly complaints about what we're doing wrong, now, though, instead of solutions.

* Replace "he/his" with "she/her", "black" with "female", and "niggerish" with "a bitch"

The American political atmosphere sucks.

Too much emphasis on race/gender.

Too much emphasis on their personality.

Too much emphasis on how someone tried crack once in high school and so is unfit to run the country.

Too much time and money is dedicated to getting people to vote in the first place, let alone informing voters of what the policies are. Plus this focus on a single issue (conduct in Iraq), as well as using familiar buzzwords and catchphrases and so on, such as "investing in our children" and so on. Then there's forcing your family up to wave with you to show you're a family man ( a woman has to be a ball breaker to become Prez in the first place, so they don't have this responsibility).

Now, I'm not saying this doesn't happen to some degree in other countries, but really - I can't say I like your system at all. I'd elaborate more, but I've just finished work and am going home

I think we should just have a monarchy. Have a king, does something wrong, revolt and kill em! :D
Seriosly though it doesn't matter either way what happens in office. When it really comes down to it the democracy loses all control of itself. Bush vs Gore is a prime example of how a democracy is a huge irony of itself. If you don't win vote for a recount. So I avoid all political mess by just not getting into to it that much. Thanks for your time. lol

Just cleanse those southern rednecks in the United States, and the complete Republical party, and you'll never hear something about racism...

I don't see the problem. I am black myself, and well, I think you shouldn't nitpick on everything.

And completely massacre someone who's being a upright racist.

That was a reference to this thread.

Other than that, my money's still on Kalifohniah Gubahnator.

No. Racism is *judging* people based on race. I'm not judging anyone.

I'm not talking about phenotypes, but about actual genetic differences. Of course there are genetic differences.
However, these differences aren't actually linked to the skin-colour gene, but there is a statistical correlation. For instance, Asians are a lot shorter, on average and there is a certain gene that a lot of asians carry that causes them to be poorly resistant to alcohol. However, this isn't actually caused by them being Asian.

The correct word is slate.

But he is a sleight man.

"Racism" is a part of human behavior. Everybody makes decisions based on previous experience, the way your mind works is to group things into categories. Actual racism is when you continue to use a category after having seen evidence (or refusing to see) to the contrary as regards people of a certain color. The fact that you might make a judgment about a person based on their socioeconomic group/race/clothing/way of speaking isn't racism, not changing or modifying that opinion after learning more about the person could be.

But yeah, I was speaking generally. Completely unrelated.

No. Racism is *judging* people based on race. I'm not judging anyone.

Aye, I looked up the word. Plenty of definitions, some more inclusive than others. I thought basically it meant the belief that race alone can account for certain differences among the races, namely intelligence, achievement, violence, etc. One can technically believe that without judging individuals but still be a racist maybe? Dunno.

I'm not talking about phenotypes, but about actual genetic differences. Of course there are genetic differences.

I guess the question is how far do the differences go?

As for Obama, it irritates me that his blackness would be reason alone for some to, and some not to vote for him. Kinda like affirmative action irritates me.

I'll be voting for him if he gets nominated unless someone better comes along. I see his "lack of experience" as a good thing. The less deep his roots are into the entire political system, the less chance for corruption and ulterior influence is my guess.
