Resident Evil 5

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
The only thread I saw was old and demo related, so I figured I would start a new one. If a mod would rather use an old thread, I apologize and you can merge away.

I am about to head to Gamestop for the Midnight release. Anyone else going or picking the game up soon?

Will post back tomorrow with a spoiler free mini review on the game.

Also, not sure how many of you know this already but DLC has already been announced at the price of $5 on PSN and XBLA.

"Versus allows up to four players to match wits in online battles across two very different game types. Slayer's Rule is a point-based game that challenges players to kill Majinis. In Survivor's Rule, players hunt the most dangerous game, each other! Players can begin the hunt as Chris, Sheva or other secret characters, and choose from either one-on-one or two-versus-two team matches for either of the two gameplay styles."

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow.

I don't have a car right now and taking the bus late at night is a daunting task that I don't feel like undertaking when I can easily do it the next morning.

I am also picking it up tomorrow, so far I've heard that it is pretty cheese-tastic, like previous predecessors. Anyone see those Re:5 viral videos?

...Laughably bad.

Anyways, I kind of miss the whole "horror" aspect of the games that is now missing. I plan on playing in hard mode to get the full experience.

Well any trace of horror other than what you are fighting is most definitely gone. To some degree that saddens me but at the same time I am having a lot of fun with this game. Granted I am playing on normal and Shevas AI at the moment is actually competent, my feelings might change once I try the harder difficulties.

A neat feature is that any guns you unlock you can carry over into your new game on a later difficulty. Also when a particular weapon is upgraded all the way you receive infinite ammo for it. All of which can be turned off in a special menu if I am understanding this right.

From what I am reading however you need the infinite ammo for Pro mode. A single hit supposedly takes you down to "dying" and I can imagine Sheva's intelligence becomes that of a sea sponge.

Very fun "Third Person Action with horror monsters" game so far. I am a couple chapters in.

I'm not much of a resident evil fan to be honest... Yet, my roomie on the other hand, loves the hell out of it. We played the demo, it was enjoyable but the interface seemed somewhat cumbersome... Then again, all FPS's feel that way on the 360 to me. I thought the same about Mass Effect when I first played it.

Third person shooter, not FPS.

Probably gonna pick it up. Quite a fan of Resi games, though not sure why, though I may wait until it hits the PC.
Then again got the gamecube and PC version of Resi 4 :P

Why do people keep bemoaning the "lack of horror" for RE4 and 5? Seems like the most horrifying thing they omitted from previous games was the awful control scheme.

'Ol bag! I thought you were gone. It pleases me it isn't so.

Never been a fan of Resident Evil. From what I see of this fifth installment, the biggest amount of horror comes from the protagonist's haircut. A bit like the new Alone in the Dark.

Well as of Resident Evil 4, RE series became a great action game. From what I've seen about RE5, it's more of the same, which is exactly what I want from it. So it's not scary, big deal, it's still fun. Why "no horror" should instantly mean it's a bad game?
I surely hope RE5 will come out on PC.

The only RE i played was RE 4. it was good. but i am not sure if i will like RE 5. i played the demo and didn't really liked it tbh.

Resident Evil has never really been scary scary, it's always been more about creating a sense of panic than about sheer terror.

There are a lot of moments throughout the series where I've said "Oh shit!" but not a lot where I've said "Oh my God..."

I have never had issues with the controls in any of the games. So long as they do not throw in the "run and gun" gameplay I will be happy.

The series director said RE6 would be getting a "series reboot" so what that means is up to speculation.

The only Resident Evil game that would even have a chance of creeping me out at night with the lights off would be REmake. Of course even it pales in comparison to "psychological horror" games such as Fatal Frame and Silent Hill.

I only have one complaint with this game so far and that is there is no creepy merchant guy.
Instead what we get is between missions or when you load a game you go to some bland menu screen where you can organize your inventory, swap out weapons with an out of game inventory, upgrade, buy, etc.

Sure having some crazy old man standing around in dungeons and having random weapons shops in caves is not realistic but neither is the magical weapons fairy who somehow delivers what ever you buy in the menu instantly when your in some sewer or the middle of the desert.

At least the merchant was fun.

I pretty much discovered the RE series on the Gamecube, starting with RE remake and then playing and getting all the other parts; RE0, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, Resident Evil Code Veronica, one of those shooter games, and last Resident Evil 4.

The controls definitely felt better on RE4, and I didn't mind that some of the 'collect' puzzles had been removed, but it definitely was not survival horror anymore.

While RE5 looks control wise good as it continues on RE4, the story stuff which was always on the edge pretty much jumped over and has become as corny as that of MGS4.

I will not spoil it for you all as I don't want you to be angry at me, but be warned.

Wasn't story in RE series a big cheese-fest from the very first game really? After I first played Silent Hill 1 on PS1 I could never take RE stories seriously nor could I see any true "horror" in this series. I don't think story was ever the strong point of RE games.

That is true, but to me it has gone batshit loopy, with a couple of very stupid plot devices.

[spoiler:31393b5723]Wesker is now part of a "Project Wesker", a project to create a 'super man' by recruiting, training and genetically modifying very intelligent children and calling them all 'Wesker' (not exactly cloning but very MGS like)

Umbrella's BOW projects were nothing more like a 'side' business to make money, their real goal is to evolve humanity using viruses (come on!) with Spencer becoming their 'god'.[/spoiler:31393b5723]
