Risen - Now Available on GoG.com

It's good game though not as good as Gothic 1,2 and 3.
but still, it's one of good RPG among theses days.
for bad word, it's kind of Gothic's leftover.
for good word, it's sequel of Gothic series.
(the lore feels like connected each other, systems are almost same, made by Piranya bytes, too many things are remind me Gothic 1 and 2)

too bad game itself is downgraded from G2,3.
but they are one of developers who try thier best to make game better.
I should by one more copy of Risen from GOG when I have enough money.

Risen feels a lot like Gothic 1 to me, with better graphics and smoother combat because they eliminated the built-in command delay. I've heard the ending is less good, but I'm going to remain hopeful.

I can't believe anyone liked Gothic 3. That was a horrible misstep in my book. I got about 75% through and quit because it was boring.

One other thing I can't help but notice while playing Risen: I never fail to appreciate the superb voicing and facial animations from Bloodlines. That game was released years earlier than Risen (the same year as Gothic 2, IIRC), but the character speech is still markedly better.

if you compare Gothic 3 to Arcania ... then it was pretty good. Of course that should tell you how bad arcania actually was. Which means it was a steaming pile of ... anyway. Risen is not bad. Its pretty good. But the ending is indeed a bit disapointing.

Hehe Arcania was so bad, I remember facepalming a lot while playing the demo. That thing was such a huge failure.

I heard Arcania is far better than Forsaken god.
and after playing Forsaken god I'm sure it is the worst thing among Gothic.

I think G3 is best RPG among Gothic series because it's the only game which have
non-linear plot.
you even can beat the game without meeting with Xardas or Rhobar II.
other Gothic series are actually linear except for NotR and 3.
but for me, the best Gothic was 2 while as a RPG, G3 is best.

for me, Risen 1 reminds me G2 more than 1.
for example: harbor town(->Khorinis), Don esteban( Esteban at badit camp and Onar), Inquisitor( paladins), mage(fire mage)... etc
but Mendoza(->Col kalom), fire titan(-> Sleeper) and dungeons reminds me G1 though.

I think G3 is best RPG among Gothic series...
Ouch.

Risen 1 reminds me G2 more than 1.
Now that I've gotten farther into it, I can see that. The town is reminiscent of the town in Gothic 2.

I'm really liking Risen so far. I like the combat, I like the style, and I think the writing and the relationships between the factions is solid. It makes me want to play Gothic 1 and 2 again.

I just completed my basic training, and I'm starting on my mage training.

If I have a complaint I guess it's to wish there were different 3D models for some of the different monsters. For example, the grave moths look almost the same as the much tougher talon moths, or whatever they're called. The only difference is a recolored texture. The same with wolves and black wolves.

Gnomes are good though. I like those little boogers. I like to kill them, that is.

Any opinions on Risen 2?

I played Risen2 and I'm satisfied with the game.
First, it looks like dumb down from Risen 1.
lots of cut scences, linear story, world stops when you use inventory or open chest ..etc
but after first artifact, the game become free of plot: you can go what ever you want to progress story.
I love system of learning in Risen 2. I think it's best for balancing attribute.
lots of things were dumbed down for console but still, I think PB is doing good job on improving game.
but game feels like too short. and DLCs are not worth it's price.

I think G3 is great RPG because game doesn't just give you story to read but give you tools to make your own story.
other Gothics(includung Risen) are linear.
game gives you easy goal to progress stroy. you don't have to concern how to solve the situation or what to choose because the solution is given easily.
and the story is fixed even you choose different faction to join.(but for sub quests, there are little difference though.)
but G3, it's different. the game gives you a quests to find Xardas but you don't have to find him to beat the game.
what you need to find is how to beat the game by asking around.
while you asking around how to beat the game, you should do some action
for example, if you want to find Xardas, you need to help orcs to gain thier trust to ask someone know about Xardas.
each subquests' storys are not good as Fallout series or 2 but unlike other Gothic series, quests are somewhat connected.
not by fixed plot, but by faction systems.
and the most important thing is, what you do is not given by story but by informations and my own opinion.

but again, I don't think G3 is best Gothic.
storys are not good as 1 or 2, characters are boring and world is not interesting as 1,2.
but as a RPG, G3 is best because there is not much thing to manipulate player with fixed plot.

...and Risen 2:gold edition also added to GOG.
I see that. Still a little pricey for my taste. Besides, I'm not sure how well it will run on my six-year-old computer, although Risen 1 runs flawlessly with all the graphics options maxed out.

I'll buy Risen 2 when I can get it for < $5.

I'm pretty obsessively involved in my Risen 1 game. It just happens to be exactly the kind of game I've been in the mood for, so I'm really enjoying it, especially now that I've joined the Convocation.

I really like melee combat in Risen. Once you get counter-attacks and charge attacks it gets easier. Missile weapons are a little too exploitable. You can kill powerful enemies by kiting, and it's too easy to hide behind trees and rocks. I killed an ashbeast by shooting him in the head over and over with a crossbow. I was pretty close to him, but he couldn't see me because I was standing behind a branch.

I finished the game. Yep, the ending is bad. It makes absolutely no sense for a Master of the Conclave like my character.

Actually it might be okay if there were three or four different ways to end the game, and this was merely one of them.

The island is a nice setting, but they tried to cram one chapter too many into it. The whole...

...find the Titan Lord armor quest...

...should have been left as optional side quests IMO. Frankly, I enjoyed...

...plundering the tombs of the Saurian priests...

...but I would have preferred not having it forced on me with the ridiculous false-urgency of the world hanging in the balance.

It's too bad, because the early-to-late-middle parts of the game are quite good.

but I would have preferred not having it forced on me with the ridiculous false-urgency of the world hanging in the balance.
you mean mainstream of G3? for me it was quite interesting despite lack of connection between G1,2. and actually, it's not urgent unlike war of Hooverdam.

the ending is bad
it wasn't bad for me because it reminds me ending of G1. to be honest, G1's ending already disappointed me:grin:.

The island is a nice setting, but they tried to cram one chapter too many into it. The whole...
wasn't that same with G1? I remember almost every subquest of G1 is end at chapter 1.

The good part of Risen 1 is chapter 1 and plundering dungeons.
it's like G1: factions and subquests doing their role well at chapter 1 and dungeons are good enough to enjoy.

While replaying Risen 1, I was disappointed...
finding muderer is surely quite interesting event but problem is..
it was too linear. at least I should find information to progress the quest but
I can't suspect someone even if I know enough but should progress quest..
I know Risen 1 is not a bad game, actually it's good game among RPGs these days
but it's quite a dissapointment.

you mean mainstream of G3?
Nope, I'm only talking about Risen

The good part of Risen 1 is chapter 1 and plundering dungeons.
I liked just about everything up to helping the Inquisitor enter the volcano. Then it became kind of tedious.

But like I said, I enjoyed plundering the tombs of the Saurian priests. The problem is, Mendoza enters the Titan's prison, and suddenly you get this quest that will take many days to complete. Yet you're supposed to finish it before Mendoza frees the titan. How long does it take him to free the titan? He would have starved to death before he finished if it took him as long as it took me to finish collecting the Titan Lord's armor.

I find it hard to replay Risen, because now that I know how it ends, it takes a lot of the fun out of the early game. Too bad.

I think I'll try replaying Gothic 1 and 2. It's been so long since I first played those I don't even remember exactly how they ended anymore.

I understand that .
finding all the titan armor takes too much time while stoping Mendoza looks urgent.
hell, finding tomb is first thing to wonder and exploring dungeon is another things to wonder.
I think Risen 1's dungeon is better than not only Risen 2 but also than Gothic series.
too bad they abandon dungeon again... I remember dungeon of G1 was good but after G1,
dungeons become worse.

I think another good part of Risen 1 is magic.
it's very well designed tool to solving situation.
and it's not too powerful neither too weak.

I started playing Gothic 1 again last night. I'd forgotten how strange the controls are. Once you get used to them they work okay though.

I saw somebody on a message board say they thought PB should do a reboot of Gothic 1. After restarting Gothic 1 again, I think that's not a bad idea.

No it's bad idea.
is there anything new in G1?
I know it was good game but it's not good enough to be greater than PB's newer games.

I found interview of creater of Gothic series
Q: Would you like to go back to developing a new Gothic game?
A: Oh, ok, the following only represents my own opinion:

To be honest: not really. The one who develops a new Gothic, will get his fingers burned. He will be slashed by magazines and burned alive by die hard fans.

The expectations for this game would be so high, we couldn’t meet them.

The times have changed, the Gothic games lived up by a different mood, we were much more experimental back in the day. Something that was very exciting and the player could feel this loose and playful approach, but this also led to exorbitant developing times and many many bugs. We fixed this, but we also parted from this sand box developing approach.

What is this desperate need for a new Gothic game? What is expected? Well, a Gothic 1 extension is expected. Basically the same game, but more of it and in a fresh looking environment. Despite the fact, that our company is no more the same like back in the day and we would have a hard time, getting back that “feel”, chances are, we would be accused of plagiarism and lack of innovation. Like “copy-pasting” our selves. These are accusations, we actually have to face very often; nearly after every new project. But in combination with a new Gothic, this would be terrible for the Gothic world.

When we do this, this one has to be nailed. It has to be fabulous in every aspect and there should be a huge and long planning phase. I believe it to be developed some day. But not now.

For Fallout series, newer fans(fans of fo3) are obstacles for better Fallout.
but for Gothic, I think older fans are obstacles for better Gothic or Risen.

I am not sure new Fo fans are that much an obstacle.
I believe there are more Fo3 haters than FoNV haters. (many Fo3 fans liked FoNV)

No it's bad idea...I think older fans are obstacles for better Gothic or Risen.
I was going to say, "Why not just remake Gothic 1 but put a different name on it?" but then that's basically what Risen is.

It's interesting playing Gothic 1 right after playing Risen. They are very, very similar. I actually like a lot of things about Gothic 1 better than their equivalents in Risen. For example, picking locks in Gothic works the same way as in Risen, but in Gothic you don't get a visual representation of each left-right choice you make so you have to remember them, and you aren't tipped off to how complex the lock is before you start trying to pick it. Much better in Gothic. I also like swimming, and I miss that in Risen.

I remember when I first tried Gothic it seemed like a cross between a cRPG and Tomb Raider. If I were going to change the PB formula I would add more from both those genres. On the cRPG side, I would add things like skill checks for dialogues, and more skill levels to sneaking. On the Tomb Raider side I would add a lot more climbing and swimming (but make it skill based). I would also add more puzzles and traps in the ruins and caves.

cross between a cRPG and Tomb Raider
I see. that's the good point of Gothic 1:dungeons and puzzles.
I also like swimming
I heard PB add swimming at Risen 3!! I hope they add some more good contents for unsing swimming.
there aren't many situations to use swimming at G1 and 2.
would add things like skill checks for dialogues
Risen2 has skill checks. it doesn't have much function, but they will make better at sequel.

I wonder G1's dungeon is actually good.
IMO, G1's dungeon is best among Gothinc series but that's because other Gothic's dungeons are sucks.
I don't know much about puzzles of dungeon games except for Thief series.
and compare with Thief, G1's dungeon isn't that special. maybe because Thief was too good.
but what if other shitty dungeon games(like TES) are bad enough to feel G1's dungeon is great?
and there aren't much games that have great dungeons in these days?

Risen also tried dungeon and puzzle.
magic itself was good not too bad or not too good.
but most of puzzles are mostly solved by magic( or arrows if you don't have magic).
I didn't see any puzzles or traps which requires complicate answer to solve or avoid.
dungeons look complicated but still feel like linear.
