RPGenius' troubles (split from FAQ)

RPGenius

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
My copy of Fallout 2 installed ok. However, upon attempting to play the game, it gives me the "Couldn't find text/fonts" message. I was unable to follow the advice steps, as I cannot find the file required for aforementioned editing. Any ideas for any futher steps to take?

Thanks or that, apologies for my foolishness there. It's installed, but I now recieve the following error message when trying to run Fallout: "Could not find the master datafile. Make sure the FALLOUT CD is in the drive and that you are running FALLOUT from the directory you installed it to." This seems odd, the disc is in working condition, as it is the disc used to install and run all the collection, and it mentions Fallout, not Fallout 2. Any help, and all apologies if I've missed something painfully obvious.

Copy the master.dat file to your hard drive and have the config file point there.

With all that done (and Help Greatly appreciated) I still cannot play the game. I recieve the "Couldn't locate/load text fonts" error message, despite my fallout2.cfg file reading
"[system]
critter_dat=C:\data\critter.dat
critter_patches=c:\games\fallout2\data
master_dat=C:\master.dat\data
master_patches=c:\games\fallout2\data
free_space=0"

Again, I'm sorry that getting two to work is proving this difficult, and I really appreciate the help I've recieved. This hopefully is the last you'll be bothered by me on the subject.

As I've already said, have the config file point to the actual location of the master.dat file.
Unless your master.dat file is actually c:\master.dat\data and your critter.dat c:\data\critter.dat, there's no way that that's correct.

Judging by the rest of your config file, they're probably in c:\games\fallout2\master.dat and c:\games\fallout2\critter.dat

What's fixed? For fuck's sake, we need a bit more info than that.
Are the files actually in that location? Does your game still give that same error? What things are and aren't in your current install directory? Have you tried compatibility mode? What have you done already?

Also, split since this is getting a bit lengthy for the FAQ.

Sorry, made that post in a rush. To elaborate: The fallout2.cfg now points to the correct places. I still, however recieve the same error message.

...
Urgh. Did you even read my previous post?
Here's what I asked you:
Are the files actually in that location? Does your game still give that same error? What things are and aren't in your current install directory? Have you tried compatibility mode? What have you done already? [/auote]
Here's how many questions of those you answered:
1.

Thought I was clear, sorry. The files were not where the .cfg file said they were. I changed the .cfg file so that it pointed to the correct place.

What are you, bloody blind?

Oh, and I've got another one: what is exactly in your .cfg file right now?

I still, however recieve the same error message.

but I still get the same error message.

I still recieve the error message "Couldn't find/load text fonts"

I have tried Compatibility mode, and all the things suggested in the Stickied thread that this was originally in.

My .cfg file reads:
"[system]
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\Fallout 2\data\critter.dat
critter_patches=c:\Program Files\Fallout 2\data\critter.dat
master_dat=C:\Program Files\Fallout 2\master.dat\data
master_patches=c:\Program Files\Fallout 2\master.dat\data
free_space=0"

Currently in the C:\Program Files\Fallout 2 directory is:
"Fallout 2" (The game)
"fallout2.cfg"
Subfolder: "data"
contains: Subfolder: "critter.dat"
contains: "critter_dat"
Second Subfolder from "C:\Program Files\Fallout 2":"master.dat"
contains: Subfolder: "data"
contains: "master_dat"

....
No wonder it doesn't work, you *never actually pointed your cfg to point to the master.dat files*.
Fuck.

Here's what it's supposed to read with a normal copying of the files:
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\Fallout 2\critter.dat
critter_patches=c:\Program Files\Fallout 2\data
master_dat=C:\Program Files\Fallout 2\master.dat
master_patches=c:\Program Files\Fallout 2\data
Here's what it has to look like with your completely weirded out directory structure:
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\Fallout 2\data\critter.dat\critter_dat
critter_patches=c:\Program Files\Fallout 2\data\
master_dat=C:\Program Files\Fallout 2\master.dat\data\master_dat
master_patches=c:\Program Files\Fallout 2\data

Now, if you'd just answered my questions earlier, this would've been fixed much more quickly.
