Sega GT Online: Gran Turismo Who?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
Well, as promised, here is my first impressions of Sega GT Online.

Needless to say, Sega GT Online is to Sega GT 2002 what Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution is to Virtua Fighter 4: an upgrade that throws a crapload of new features and goodies at you and is priced to move at $20. And like VF4 Evo, it's pretty good. Not much has changed, heck, even the main mode is still called the Sega GT 2002 mode. I don't know if that's laziness or what, but since the actual driving mechanics find a perfect middle ground between simulation and arcade, I'm not complaining.
First up on the new features list is Gathering mode. It's a gauntlet of minigames that are seperated into three parts- how many laps you can get in before time runs out, abbreviated versions of the GT 2002 mode's license tests, and a gymkana course. (that's like the SCCA Solo parking lot challenges) Completing one earns you a medal, and a car is unlocked for purchase in GT 2002 mode.
And there are the online modes, which can be broken into three modes as well: straight up races with up to 12 cars at once, a team mode that plays out like a relay race, and a cool mode that has one player drive on a fog-filled course, and the other player acting like a copilot, barking instructions and sending turn signals. You can also trade cars and parts, too. Variety isn't an issue.
And then there are the cars. The entire Sega GT 2002 lineup returns, with 40 new cars for a total of over 160 cars. That's not a lot when you compare it to the 500+ in Gran Turismo 4, but there isn't a weak one in this bunch. The lineup has an emphasis on old school- old school, as in some of the cars are Roaring Twenties/Great Depression era roadsters from Bugatti and Mercedes Benz. An Auto Union (the brand that's now known as Audi) hillclimber from the '30s is included as well. Bonus points to Sega for including the '69 Camaro, '70 Hemi AAC 'Cuda and the '63 Corvette Sting Ray, and several other classic muscle cars. Also, fans of Mazda's line up of rotary-powered sports cars are in for a treat- every Wankel-engined car from Mazda, from the Cosmo Sport to the RX-8, is represented well. Every version of the Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is represented well, too.

Overall, if you have an Xbox, you should get Sega GT Online post haste. Just bring your own music- the in game tunes still suck.
