Smolensk. There are no survivors in the plane crash that occurred near the Russian town of Smolensk, AFP reports, quoting a statement of the district’s governor.
Earlier, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that President Lech Kachinsky was on board of the passenger plane that took off from Warsaw and crashed in an attempt to land at the airport in Smolensk.
According to the information provided by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, 87 people had died in the crash.

The Presidential pair, the Chief of Staff and the President of the Central Bank are among the casualties.

Anyone wanting to take advantage of this, remember we're pretty good at partisan warfare.

Holy crap! Good thing it didn't happen to the americans or chinese... poles won't start a world war.

Knowing how they feel about russians....conspiracy theories will flow.

Wow. A lot of polish officials died. Also, the commander in chief of the navy, the polish amry general staff, ministry of foreign affairs...

Putin must be having a party. :o

Put all your eggs in one basket...

Anyway, don't most of the (appointed) officials have equally competent backups and replacements?

It's Government, don't use the word competent.

If a president ever admitted that there exists someone who is equally competent as he and is cabinet, why would the people vote for him and not the other guy/not ask for his replacement to take over next time?

That's not the point! I was referring to the appointed officials, i.e. generals and such. You can't just replace elected people.

Again, bail!

Yeah, i guess generals are replaceable. It doesn't even matter that much during peacetime. Most generals don't have war experience, so it's not like losing Rommel, Montgomery or Eisenhower...

Yes but why not just say the glasses are empty or that all the people in Government are incompetent.

I just hope the new president of Poland, Bronislaw Komorowski, isn't pro Russian, because that would mean an easier way for Putin to put his "Split and Conquer!" tactics, into effect, on our Baltic states...
